Thing in the Ice its OP in modern, you can turn 2 cast it, turn 3 cast Vampire Hexmage and open for a dispel to protect them, then up all the eldrazis to the hand and swing by 7, a 3 turn clock, its dark depths combo fixed !!!
Pretty sure Vampire Hexmage won't transform this due to the way it's worded.

Lore thoughts:
In the clue token, they mention the tide rising and chanting. There is something evil and madness-inducing in the deep. This is similar in lore the SOI's likely namesake -- The Shadow over Innsmouth (the next set, Eldritch Moon, should assure skeptics that this was intentional.) But there is something worthy of note about the focus on tides: tides are affected by the moon. This was also likely intentional.
Getting into some murkier territory, Warped Landscape and Thraben Inspector show similar geometric designs in the artwork. What do we know that is able to warp the landscape and has similar creeping tendrils? Emrakul. Of course, following The Shadow Over Innsmouth more closely, the lurking enemy in deep might just be some Lovecraftian sea monster. Alternatively, Emrakul could be hiding in the moon.
At the end of the day, all I want is a new Mikaeus card called "Mikaeus, Host of the Nightmare," with flavor texts that includes "Ah, Cosi... or as some say, Kozilek..."

You know, I always think it is funny like so many people in the Rumor Mill share their story theories here. There is a forum on MTGsal about Magic Story, you can go there and everything that is being discussed here was already discussed there and deflagrated into multiple theories and plots for a storyline... why not go there to discuss it?
I don't mean to say this here as a way to shut down fun theories and conversations, but just to invite more people to the story forum and make it flourish more, it is a very fun forum, my favorite here on this site. Anyway, I think there is a nice overlap between people who appreciate spoilers and rumors and the people who like the storyline.

That won't work, at least not without casting a spell afterwards.
The money comment was not directed at you. I just was trying to avoid double postings. I'm mostly annoyed with the price because I really like the card and want to put it in one of my casual decks :p. What I was trying to point out was that as far as quickly flipping this card goes it seems pretty difficult to accomplish in a timely matter. On the play you are only going to have access to 9-11 cards by turn three depending on how many cantrips you have. in order to have 4 spells to cast over a third or you opening hand plus draws needs to be spells which after muligans, variation and timing is taken into consideration, is a very stiff requirement. The cards is way cool, I'm just advocating caution when evaluating it. I would love to see it as a control finisher in standard since there it will be much easier to flip as games go longer and Jace often flashes back several spells a game making the transform condition easily achievable. As long as a 0/4 is worth playing and the removal of choice isn't too good against it I expect it to see in a few lists. In standard the scariest thing so far is silkwrap since it can hit both sides and even if it is removed our icy friend comes back as a 0/4 with 4 counters.

Yep, I'm pretty sure as well. Since the card only checks to see if there are any ice counters on it after its ability to remove an ice counter has triggered. You'll have to cast at least one instant or sorcery spell to transform it.
When I saw Thing in the Ice I was sure it was that Lage!
Awesome cards overall. I love the Alucard vampire!! Werewolf isn't super exciting, though it has fairly decent stats and I love the art. I'm loving this set so far.
Only thing that bothers me is that apparently Fallen Angel and Unsummon are now considered OP while Wizards thinks cards like that mythic Zombie are fine.
Unsummon isn't really a constructed card and it's stronger than normal in limited against DFC. It's no different than changing up common removal to help out a big creature theme in limited. Fallen Angel also makes zero sense in white unless it gains delirium which flavorfully shows the normally white angel going crazy. Fallen Angel would also gain power in SOI limited just like how they replaced Evolving Wilds with Terminal Moraine instead. Seriously, it isn't about card X is better than card Y. These are limited cards we're talking about. If limited fodder is too good in limited, you make it weaker to fit the environment.
So, am I the only one who thinks this kraken looks pretty Therosian? Seems odd to me. But it's a pretty neat card.
Skulk seems like they're experiementing to find a UB evergreen keyword.
Strictly worse Evolving Wilds is interesting.
This and evolving wilds are in completely different boats. Strictly worse doesn't describe it. Wilds doesn't even tap for mana. These lands have vastly different jobs in different decks.

Didn't you get the memo? On MTGS "strictly worse" means "there exist possible situations where it's worse."

Oops. I didn't notice that this new one taps for mana, my mistake.
And, for the record, I am definitely NOT in that boat when it comes to "strictly worse". Strictly worse means "objectively worse in all conceivable situations involving existing cards", not "subjectively worse when used in a similar deck or strategy". I simply misread the card.

Wow...the fact that the price on a card before its even released or has been played with can go up that much due to just hype is incredibly idiotic.
And, for the record, I am definitely NOT in that boat when it comes to "strictly worse". Strictly worse means "objectively worse in all conceivable situations involving existing cards", not "subjectively worse when used in a similar deck or strategy". I simply misread the card.
Well, it *would* be rather flavorful to release the kraken by casting a bunch of burn spells.
