The first thought in my head after seeing that artwork was Sorin saying, "Okay, time for a do over." And while I do feel a little sad to see her character bite the dust, the timing feels a bit premature to show such an important plot point this early. Maybe there's something more to it? Oh and yay for more Tamiyo!
Well, it is only the first set of a two-set block.
And @Pylgrim, I think it's just key art, like the Kolaghan Dragon storming the Abzan group from Dragons of Tarkir, or the art of Elspeth standing on top of the red hydra from Theros, or Gideon squaring off against Ulamog from BFZ. It's just a bit too stretched to be card art.
Given how we've been led astray by early 'spoilers' only to find out they weren't quite as we thought (Aligned Hedron Network, fat pack summaries etc.), and given that Avacyn hasn't quite met her Utter End in this art yet, I'm going to hold fire this time on jumping to conclusions.
Interesting how in the solo pic only the tips of her wings are red, while in the (later) group pic, she's nearly half pink. Actually she's almost a galah!
I suppose I'm just world weary from all this modern pop culture nonsense in my MtG. Where's the Lovecraftian horror of old that made the set unique? Hopefully still there. Looks like it so far. But not with Avacyn. She's just a marketing tool/pop-culture plot device now.
Innistrad had nothing to do with Lovecraft's work.
While Shadows Over Innistrad has a very strong eldritch horror theme, Innistrad block was gothic horror.
Do we have a timeline for when the Helvault was created vs. when Nahiri went missing vs. the mending?
Is it possible that the helvault was a creation of Nahiri's and/or fueled by her and/or was in some way a cocoon of sorts to keep her around until such time as the Eldrazi broke free?
If the timeline works (story gurus help me out here) I can imagine a storyline where the mending happens and Nahiri starts growing old. Sorin brings her to Innistrad and convinces her to preserve herself or perhaps forces her into the Helvault so that if the eldrazi ever break free of their prisons her magic will still be around to help seal them up again. I can imagine that spending time trapped within the confines of a prison that holds countless demons might drive one mad.
This would be a story arch I would enjoy greatly. Unfortunately, Sorin was unaware of Nahiri's location during the events of Zendikar block, and not even certain (though it was implied he had an idea) during Battle for Zendikar. If she had built, and/or been trapped in the Helvault, Sorin should have been aware of it.
It is still possible, but needs a strong reason for why Sorin was oblivious.
Innistrad had nothing to do with Lovecraft's work.
As a devoted reader of H.P. Lovecraft's work I'll have to disagree with you here.
The original Innistrad has wonderful flavour of gothic horror, madness & despair, and of ancient evils lurking in the night. Very much a nod to Lovecraft, the works of Poe and other classic gothic writers of old. There is little difference between "eldritch" and "gothic" horror. The word eldritch simply means spooky or weird. Goth on the other hand is simply about setting, tones, fashions and characters. All in all, the original Innistrad block was already an Eldritch/Gothic Horror setting, not one or the other.
From a narrative perspective, it's pretty awful to have this art be spoiled so early.
On the same day that I see Avacyn in her crazy, vengeful form, I also see Sorin putting her down.
That wasn't a very long window of suspense.
Compare to the New Phyrexia/Mirrodin Pure suspense, where they even went as far as commissioning fake art to lend credence to the possible Mirrodin Pure outcome.
I do hope that it is just a purification and not an Unmake myself. Avacyn is one of my favorite Angels from recent years. Killing her just 'cause they can is so... anti-climatic. I don't care if she and Sorin battled for a thousand days and nights before he brought her to heel, killing her just feels lazy and uninspired.
I disagree. It's definitely the step in the right direction. Inistrad stands for horror, which Avacyn stands against. Removing her is a really good decision storywise.
Saving her woudn't matter since her name has already been tainted and people already lost their trust and hope on her
Thats my thought as well. She stood as a figurehead for hope. Once your icon goes rabid and starts murdering those she was supposed to protect, they'll never trust her again, never. That's what i find cool about this set-up, he has to take her out, she cant be allowed to exist anymore because she could never be a protector of Innistrad again.
You know they introduced Griselbrand and then immediately killed him off within the same paragraph/article last time right?
I did not, actually. You make it sound like that was perfectly fine the first time around. If I'd been playing more regularly, and paying more attention to the story, around that time... I'd have been just as annoyed then as I am not.

Necessary now that her reputation is tainted, perhaps. But removing her is not a good decision. Innistrad is a Gothic Horror plane that persists despite Avacyn and the Church. It's the idea of mad scientists and corpse traders, etc. conducting their work in secret. The holy church against the dark world. Now Innistrad will be run over with evil, with nothing to protect humanity, nothing to offer contrast, nothing to act as a foil to the darkness, ampifying it against the backdrop of Thraben.
Jenrik: Yes, there's nothing to protect humanity if Avacyn is destroyed. (Of course, she's not protecting them now, but that was a story decision and the creative team can be judged for it.)
However, there is no evidence that Sorin won't do something similar to creating Avacyn to ensure that his plane doesn't go kaput.
In fact, there's this organization (the Gatewatch) who has sworn to protect planes from threats. Just like Liliana could bargain to join the Gatewatch to get help from her personal demons, Sorin could bargain to join to get help for Innistrad now that Avacyn isn't there to protect the humans.

And that would be absolutely disgusting. Two planes ruined so that WotC can join the Avengers bandwagon when superhero movies are on the way out and dragging characters who should have nothing to do with such a borefest
Saving her woudn't matter since her name has already been tainted and people already lost their trust and hope on her
This is a very strong point for why killing Avacyn would make sense, and why Jace and Tamiyo, who may be looking to solve the problem but save Avacyn, wouldn't understand. Sorin is white, and understands the importance of the appearance of authority. Jace and Tamiyo are blue, and wouldn't care much about Avacyn's reputation, just her functionality. Sorin needs a figure that can be trusted by the people. If there was no guardian angel to believe will save them, the humans may start looking for their own methods of protecting themselves from vampires, and that would be a huge problem. In fact, to spice up the scene even more, this could be happening after Jace and Tamiyo fixed Avacyn, only to have Sorin come in and kill her anyway because she isn't as useful as promoting or creating a new angel.

Another crazy development came to me after reading this. What if Liliana found a way to coerce some demons into doing the watching on Innistrad? Instead of being watched over by some angels who may appear benevolent but really don't give a damn about humanity, people have to rely on the charity of demons to protect them from the other monsters. Of course, I'm sure that in turn, they would require a few offerings as well, to sweeten the deal.

Slightly off topic, but you think that superhero movies are on the way out while 2 highly anticipated superhero movies are set to drop in the next 60 days? o.O
I think that saying Avacyn being gone means the end for humans might be a tad overblown. Avacyn was gone for some time and humanity was still doing that stubborn refuse to die out thing that humanity does. The forces of darkness were also dealt some harsh blows recently too with the cursemute thinning the packs and the incident at Markov manor spelling the end for a rather shocking number of vampires. I also have to agree that Sorin won't simply leave the plane unprotected if he is indeed unmaking Avacyn here. He may have an oldwalker perspective on right/wrong, but they all seem to take a place under their protection (with the exception of Liliana), and Innistrad is his.
I know this is super not going to happen but I can't help but like the idea that the Tamiyo we're seeing here...isn't Tamiyo.
With madness spreading like crazy because of certain tentacle gods we cant fathom (Praise be unto them), it only makes sense that Jace is getting hit pretty hard...likely harder then most considering he's a telepath and all. So how can he deal with not only the looming madness of the moon (and it's 5 legged shrew...praise be unto it) but also reading into the lunacy of innistrad's inhabitants ?
How about by clinging onto a journal you found ? the one thing that's helping you to understand the mystery more then anything. But say that isn't enough, say the looming crazy is too strong and he's still being affected hard what is he to do ? well probably not much he can do...consciously. But if the subconscious recognized the need for somebody to talk to, a voice of reason to make sure he doesn't end up talking to walls in gavony...why not make someone ?
An illusionary companion to ensure sanity, the subconscious sanity given form to assure continued sanity. I mean hey, he doesn't have much choices in what form it takes. He could've had anybody show up (insert Oathwalker, insert childhood bullies, insert his actual family) but that would shatter his suspension of disbelief...it'd be much easier to make the embodiment of the women who's advice you've been constantly reading and following up on, the rabbit (well Soratami) he's been chasing down the rabbit hole (well Soratami...hole...cloud palace...you get the gist). This would leave the ultimate fate of Tamiyo as a non-committal "I dunno she could be out there" (unless they reveal she's been rocked by Nahiri)...anything to keep Jace as the only mono U walker this block sadly.

Sorin would know Nahiri's in there. But... maybe he didn't? Maybe she went after Innistrad some (perhaps long) time ago, and was imprisoned by Avacyn?
Huh. I won't be preaching this theory, but it does sound interesting. And would explain how Nahiri's still alive.
I know this is super not going to happen but I can't help but like the idea that the Tamiyo we're seeing here...isn't Tamiyo.

What's the most resilient parasite? An idea.
A single idea from the human mind can build cities.
An idea can transform the world and rewrite all the rules...
So, looking at the art for the newly spoiled Flameblade Angel (from the red intro pack), she seems* to be wearing the same armor as Avacyn, or at least very similar. It's also been noted that the angel Sorin is destroying doesn't have Avacyn's pale complexion, and the wings are slightly different.
Obviously those could all be down to artistic variance, but I'm kind of thinking that that is NOT in fact Avacyn that Sorin is destroying.
*It's hard to tell given how small the art is in the image available, but it looks like it's the same. It's certainly of a very similar style.

In my opinion as a long lasting ovservator of upcoming and dying trends in cinema and pop culture, "Justice Leage" aka Batman vs Superman is the climax of the superhero movie craze. It's the one people have been waiting for, the eldest icons of modern american myth together in the silver screen.
While I like Marvel more and resent an actual X-Men movie (not Wolverine & friends/Mystique and bums) never being made, I can see a massive number of people being sated of super-heroes after seeing Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman in the same movie, even if it sucks.

Actually, I think Flameblade Angel is more likely the same angel being brought down in the art of Clip Wings (she even has the Flaming Sword of Fire). The angel in the Sorin art is categorically Avacyn - the armour, boots, greaves etc.; everything says it's her.
waaay too good for standard nowadays according to wotc, we all know that in reality. In other news, it's once again confirmed that, no matter how powerful a creature in magic is, a planeswalker can handle it without breaking a sweat. There's just no suspense in storytelling here, everyone is superman, overcoming any challenge thrown at them with ease. Poor avacyn, I hope there's still some hope left for the Angel of hope. Artwork is phenomenal imo, unreal even compared to the bfz trash.
We're not talking about any planeswalker, it's Sorin Markov, the thousand year old vampire planeswalker. The "normal guys" planeswalkers are there cowering in a corner...
This opposed to Urza who could destroy several layers of phyrexia alone before having to retreat. I'm not trying to say that there are no issues with recent storytelling in mtg, but the problem is not that "everyone is superman".
Thousands year old* Sorin is older than every other planeswalker sans the 2 dragons and Karn, combined.

First, superhero movies have been dominating the box office these last few years and the trend might continue much longer. Second gardians of the galaxy thanos edition has yet to come out. I believe that will be the height of superhero movies.
Second with avacyn gone the can introduce new story lines to Innistrad instead of avacyn saves the day. Avacyn is no different than the other angels. glad to see she got another op card
Given his key role in the original sealing away of the Eldrazi, we know Sorin is at least 6,000 years old. And by all acounts he'd already been round the multiverse a bit by then (he had previous with Ugin etc.) His web bio page said 'older than all the other walkers but Bolas put together', but the Planeswalker roster has expanded a bit since then. That did include Karn and Lili though (but not Ugin or Nahiri).
I don't think we know a definitive age for Lili. All we know is she is a pre-Mending walker who then began to age and was relatively old (60-70ish?) when she went to Bolas to get her demonic contract. How long she'd lived before the Mending though is unclear. I think her Origins UR said 'decades' rather than 'centuries', so I would put her at around 200 tops.
Tamiyo not getting a card while Lilliana, who already came to Innistrad, got a card and finished her business there last time gets one after showing up for no reason...

It is Avacyn, the bloody wingtips and hairtips are her hysteric aesthetic make-over.
Actually, I think Flameblade Angel is more likely the same angel being brought down in the art of Clip Wings (she even has the Flaming Sword of Fire). The angel in the Sorin art is categorically Avacyn - the armour, boots, greaves etc.; everything says it's her.

Will be very disappointing.
