'Mikaeus' and 'Mikus' are both given (first) names and share no other connection other than similar phonetics. It's completely pointless speculation.
Going off this first article, Hanweir is seceding from Gavony due to some sort of malcontent. The "nail in the coffin," as it's described in the article, had something to do with an untitled force going against the Krallenhorde werewolves, which apparently turned out disastrous as evidenced by the witness who lost an arm. We can reasonably assume that, because Hanwier's casting off of Gavony, it was some force from Gavony or Thraben that mucked everything up. This feels like more evidence that the establishment is either losing hold of Innistrad or is actually becoming the big bad of the set, in line Clip Wings's flavor text.
I can't wait to see some more flavorage coming out of this.

Isn't that 99% of what this forum bases their "facts" off of?

Given that one is the name of a major character from the world we are now returning to, and how similar the two names are, it would actually be a pretty silly mistake for wizards to have chosen that name if they aren't related somehow.

I love that there's some neat lore going on and people in this thread are obtuse ly debating the similarities between "Mikaeus" and "Mikus," it's astonishing.

Almost as good as people convincing themselves that there is a new eternal format when there isn't one.
Could it have been Wolfir that battled the Krallenhorde werewolves?

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
For those that remember, there was an ARG for the original innistrad, and it was really, really awesome. Looks like they're doing something similar again! I know I'll be keeping my eyes peeled.
As for speculation, I assume that those that went for the Krallenhorde are some angels, and they cut off the woman's arm either by accident, or as collateral damage which they might not care about anymore?
Given the use of the word betrayal, it sounds like the fighting force that went in to fight the Krallenhorde decided to do so before the transformation occurred, and just started offing people in the hopes that they'd get enough of them.
EDIT: Also, thanks to that article, plus this speculation, I'm hoping we run into a one-armed werewolf card.

It would appear some or all of the angels of Innistrad have gone feral, so to speak. They attack anything and everything now.
Any thoughts on the meaning of the last paragraph? The councilwoman who was against secession appears to have been hypnotized or Mindslavered. Perhaps the vampires have infiltrated the upper-levels of Gavony and are secretly controlling the political actions. Assuming the anti-secession councilwoman was, in fact, an agent of the vampires, they didn't want Hanweir to secede because that lessens their ability to sabotage defensive measures?
For the record, I didn't actually pay any attention to the story the first time around. I'm just making some baseless guesses.
I honestly think it was less that and more the shock of someone being forced to choose between their home and their faith, and in essence, losing both.

"As he held on to his last shred of humanity, Innistrad burned to the ground."
I tried.
Anyways, there's gonna be a one armed flip card definitely and with the way the story is shaping up, the forces that manipulated the councilwoman also manipulates all order in Innistrad.

Indeed, it's not like first names are also used to make a connection between close relatives.
In some cultures it is very common to have siblings with similar names. Korean is one of them.

More stories, better storytelling. It's what is needed.
