The armor on Momir Vig and the picture in the article are a 100% match, for those still questioning whether it's him. Doubtful this will be as much of a guessing game as Exalted Angel was in FTV Angels.
I expect this to be the bastard son of FTV:Legends and FTV:20, and not be as good as either judging by how little noise they made about the announcement.
Granted, they've gotten re-printed recently, but I don't think Vendilion Clique is entirely out of the question. Didn't they play an important part in Lorwyn and Shadowmoor?

This was my first thought as well. I'm 99% positive they are not talking about lore within the MTG universe; they are talking about lore concerning the game itself. I would also put Kai's topdecked Morphling into that category.
...
This is exactly what ftv:20 was advertised as, so probably not.
Not really. FTV:20 had a card from a tournament winning decklist from each of the first 20 years. What I'm proposing has nothing to do with having a card from each year nor necessarily from winning decklists. Just cards involved in epic games/moments from the Pro Tour and cards that have some unique story or lore behind them. These would be different things.

That's a really funny typo.
Oona was indeed vastly more important.

Kaldra set + token is unlikely, but if this is about important points in Magic's history (lore-wise and game wise), the three pieces do fit:
Sword - Dawn of equipment cards.
Shield - First card to mention a card not yet printed.
Helm - First card after Stangg to create a legendary token.
However, doing the kaldra set and token is 4 cards out of 16 gone right there.
Whereas Dark Depths / Marit Lage is more lore-embedded (Kaldra just came and went), and is only two cards. The land covers lore, the token covers biggest-printed-creature.
I'm guessing it's Dark Depths with the token. I've always regretted not getting a foil back in the TSP days when it was cheap (even though I got a playset at the time).
I get the feeling that this is sort of FTV Legends II: Championship Edition EX + Alpha
Sometimes you can luck out on an ebay presale before the list is spoiled, but usually you can get them for a decent price shortly after release. If you wait too long they start getting pricey.
Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
This was my first thought as well. I'm 99% positive they are not talking about lore within the MTG universe; they are talking about lore concerning the game itself.
I must not be as knowledgeable concerning tournament lore, then, because why would Momir Vig be the new art they're showing? Don't get me wrong, I think he could go great as a commander, but he doesn't seem like something that would have broken a format.
Maybe we'll get a card w/ new art depicting the Sylex blast (Devastation, Ravages of War, Ruination, Wake of Destruction, Catastrophe), or a card depicting Yawgmoth's arrival on Dominaria (Death Cloud would be my go to. Also Damnation.). As was said before, Vindicate is likely.
I'm just wanting something depicting either the Brothers' War or the Dominarian Apocalypse.

A number of people have brought up Vindicate the Apocalypse one, and while I can understand that it is supposed to depict the finale of the whole saga, the death of Yawgmoth. It does a terrible job of this, without being told that is what is represented coupled with prior information of how the event goes down I wouldn't believe that is what is being depicted. So while I would like it to make an appearance here it doesn't seem likely as there are so many other cards that actually show important/interesting events and people without having to explain what is going on, or at least with a lot less explaining.
Looking at the preview art, does anyone believe it isn't Momir Vig, Simic Visionary, while it may take explaining to tell his role in Ravnica he has a format named after him.
This was my first thought as well. I'm 99% positive they are not talking about lore within the MTG universe; they are talking about lore concerning the game itself.

Momir Vig spawned an entire online format with Momir Basic, so perhaps that is where they are going with that one.
And its not about breaking formats; the announcement specifically states that this "set includes cards from throughout Magic's history that are renowned for both their power and the stories behind them." I think that the whole 'stories behind them' has a lot of potential; it's too bad cards like Chaos Orb are on the reserved list as it has one of the most iconic Magic stories behind it. Still, there are enough non-RL cards that have cool stories behind them (whether they involve the Pro Tour/Grand Prix play or not) to make a small limited -edition set.
Look, I could be wrong here. I was just sharing what immediately came to my mind given the limited information we were given in the announcement.

This sounds like it is on the right path. If we're talking about cards with interesting/cool stories behind them, then Kaervek's Spite has a chance of being included. There's a rather epic story about it being top decked or demonic consultation'd for to win a match. "Spring forth, burly protector, and save me!" (dating myself here)

Other than the Marit Lage token that people have already speculated on, I almost want to bring up the Kaldra token, but that's unfortunately doubtful if they feel obligated to stuff in 3 of its associated cards in the set.
The art from the article could be Momir or possibly even something like Chord of Calling although it is like 99% Momir based on what Wizards has said.
My instincts also say cards like: Umezawa's Jitte, Phyrexian Arena, Urza's Rage, Deicide (pretty sure we will see this).
Jace towers over the lore so we can probably assume if there isn't a Jace there is something Jace related in the set. When you look at articles about MTG lore from their website Jace is in a lot of banners and what not.
A person mentioned Obliterate earlier and I think that is a good guess too.
I think Skyship Weatherlight or something from the Weatherlight crew has to be in this set. If not then they made a huge error in what they printed in this FTV.
"A card that's long overdue for a reprint and getting its own token being reprinted in a collector's set would clearly show that said character is the villain of a block coming out soon".
I can't with you guys. I can't
