Natural State looks interesting. Anything important it hits in Modern?
I thought the same, but I think Nature's Claim will generally outclass it. State is probably best suited against Affinity, but most decks don't care too much about an opponent gaining 4 life, and being able to burn out something of yours to gain 4 life is a bonus.
It looks like Harvester Troll is ready to stab his own eye out.
There are a lot of interesting cards, but not too many of the mythics are jaw-droppers. Most of the good stuff seems to be with the rares and uncommons.
I was looking for a card to plug up the holes in my Varolz EDH's Birthing Pod chain. Seed Guardian is just what I need.
Captain's Claws looks like a nice token generator for aggressive decks. I'm liking this trend of having small equipment with small effects that build up over time, like Sword of the Animist.
So, there are 4 common lands that produces colorless... <> mana should not be a problem in limited, unless you're very unlucky. Black look like a beating, good removal and aggressive creatures. There seems to be a lot a flyers in the set. I think limited might speed up: a *lot* less super-expensive commons, better removal.
I think the card I like the most is Pulse of Murasa. That is a lot of stuff you can do with a common, between EDH politics, helping teammate in 2HG, and being a way to get your 4th land drop and 6 life. After that there isn't much to write home about, some pretty cool art, but not much else.
Pretty disappointed that the only common Equipment in the set is Bone Saw. So much for that subtheme/archetype. Also kind of sad there isn't more than just the one white/devoid Eldrazi, I was hoping Kozilek would have at least a couple more. Also no Landfall other than the two uncommons we already had.
Devoid aggro still looks like it will be fun to play, and I'm interested to see how drafting/playing C costs and sources will play out. The mechanic doesn't have nearly as much cohesion as Ingest/Processors but it still has a setup/payoff dynamic that will hopefully be satisfying.
I'm confused. They set up Equipment as a draftable archetype to the point that the RW uncommon is built around it (well, it's a 3/2 for 2, but in theory it's for use with Equipment), and then they print...two rare Equipment, two uncommons, and one common that they'll probably be fighting with Surge decks over. And BFZ had one common and two uncommons. That feels like...not enough support. Also, in retrospect, it's weird that Herald of Kozilek was UR when the UR archetype in Kozilek's set is actually on the side of the Zendikari.
Beyond that...Wall of Resurgence seems fun (the 2-mana 0/6 Wall did work for me in BFZ Sealed, and this one brings an extra body with it, sort of), Blinding Drone seems aggravating as long as you can reliably get C mana (Gideon's Lawkeeper was a big thing in limited when it was around, right?). Slip Through Space is genuinely sweet and I want at least one for my Weirds deck. Thought Harvester enables Processors very efficiently (it should even enable the on-cast Processors if you stack the triggers correctly, I think), though I guess that's less of a big deal at 4 mana when you want to start casting them already. Cyclone Sire seems fun, and Sweep Away is interesting (it can be a worse Unsummon, but it can also be the probably-more-relevant side of Whisk Away). There are a bunch of good C mana sinks, Consuming Sinkhole is suitably odd, ditto for Immobilizer Eldrazi, and 2-mana Shock is disappointing. Kazuul's Toll Collector seems good if you actually get enough Equipments to support it (dropping a Chitinous Cloak turn 4 to throw on it does seem quite fun). Sparkmage's Gambit seems solid in an aggro deck, though I suppose the Sorcery speed could be unfortunate. I like the design on Birthing Hulk: pays for its own regeneration at least once. Ruin in Their Wake is very pretty, and the name is awesome, though the condition to make it a Rampant Growth is steep. I want to cast an Elemental Uprising on a Needle Spires at least once. Pulse of Murasa will be interesting in 2HG to recur something of your teammate's. Seed Guardian is fun. And Captain's Claws actually seems nice in my casual Mardu Allies deck to get consistent Rally triggers as long as you do what the deck wants to do anyway.
Final verdict: some fun stuff here, some stuff I might actually want to play...but not much of it is at common. Which is disappointing, but probably not surprising.

From Ravnica: City of Guilds to Shards of Alara, from Zendikar to Innistrad, from Invasion to Mirrodin, from Time Spiral to New Phyrexia and you think OATH OF THE GATEWATCH is the best set since Alpha? The only way in which that can be true is if you started with Alpha, skipped all after that and just got back into the game with that set. This set is alright, not bad not spectacular, good in general, but from the best.
After thinking on Ruin in Their Wake, I do like the sequence of T2 Ruin, T3 Explosive Vegetation, T4 Dragonlord Atarka/7 drop. Would it have killed Wizards though to just have "You may that card onto the battlefield tapped if you paid colorless mana for this spell."?

There is a *lot* of good Countermagic here!
Anyone hoping for a Snapcaster Mage reprint in SOI is in for disappointment, methinks.
Best we can hope for is it being reprinted at rare in MM3.
Geez, for the price it is now, people should just pick up a Modern Event Deck.
Funny thing is, at this moment you can't find a copy for less than $30 with combined shipping. Guess it is a good thing I have an unopened Modern Event Deck.
Goblin guide? hahaha no
Inquisition of Kozilek? hahaha no
Merfolk/Elves/Kor tribal? hahaha no
Wizards should stop trying to sell their product and start thinking what do players want to buy. That's elemental marketing, it is absurd that ALWAYS about 90% of the people is dissapointed after the set is completely spoiled.
90% of people aren't disappointed after sets are completely spoiled.
You're just in a nice echo chamber of people who would only be happy with specific Modern reprints, cards for their *insert theme* EDH deck, or cards that are just leagues better than cards that already exist.
This set turned out pretty good, I actually quite like it. Big improvement over Battle for Zendikar. Although Support is boring as we knew it would be, and Cohort is *terrible*, and arguably my least favorite mechanic in recent history. But Surge and Colorless Matters turned out much better.

There are probably more for each list but I can see this card being decent depending on the meta.
Nothing like $20 uncommons.

I can't wait for limited, besides that there is a hand full or two of cards I need for commander. I like it.
