Wait a minute... Isnt this the second version of the phyrexian mana counter that was banned because every deck started playing it??
Why wouldnt u play this? Hits loads of critters in modern and even legacy.
Stoneforge
Delver
Bob
Bop
Hierarch
Elfs
Goblins
And countering sorceries? Combo decks take a huge hit. Even if not facing blue they have to be careful.
Third ability? Just gravy!
It also shreds all Infect creatures (before buffs), and most of D&T, including Mom, Thalia, Stoneforge, Mangara, Flickerwisp... shoot, pretty much everything except Brimaz and Serra Avenger. And since it's colorless, Mom can't stop it.
This requires you to play colorless, though, Mental Mistep, you could just pay life. Talk about a misstep </rim-shot>

Not quite Mental Misstep level. It does however hit a wide array of threats while being main-deckable.
Infect creatures
Tarmogoyf (after Relic or with no cards in graveyards)
Young Pyromancer
Snapcaster Mage
Jace, Vryn's Prodigy (also conveniently works well WITH him)
...also pretty much everything in Affinity.
Oh, and if you don't have any good targets game 1, it lets you cast your 4-drop a turn earlier or stop a board wipe.
More interaction for the casual mono-Wastes deck I want to make to abuse Walker of the Wastes is definitely appreciated. Worst case, it's a two-mana, instant-speed ramp spell: albeit only as a one-off boost, but enabling a turn 3 Thought-Knot Seer or a turn 4 Reality Smasher is not insignificant, especially since the instant-speed Scion works as a surprise blocker (Wail for a Scion to block and then be sacrificed to help pay for a Spatial Contortion to kill another attacker seems reasonable). May or may not be too niche to get there in standard, but I sure as hell want four.

Well, for one, you wouldn't play this if you don't want to play ~10 colorless lands minimum to support a reactive 1C spell.

I think this card is pretty good. It's mana cost is really the only question mark, but all of its modes are efficient. At a minimum, it puts you at 4 on turn 3, that's really a good place to be in many formats. As for the exile mode, it hits a few manlands, and some of the most annoying creatures in modern. It's niche for sure, but it will see play beyond standard, I'd bet money on it. This is a very solid set, so far. There are some stinkers, and some bombs, it feels like an actual set for once since BFZ released.
I'm updating my Temur Devoid Assault deck and I immediately have to find space for this if not main definitely sideboard. Most of the cards that hose my stuff like Roast is a sorcery

This has no almost no similarities to Mental Mistep.
One of the biggest issues with Mistep was it was free. For the cost of 2 life any deck could have a turn 0 counterspell. In many eternal formats 1CMC spells are quite strong and numerous.
Warping Wail not only costs 2 mana, but one has to be colorless. For a lot of decks creating colorless mana is going to be very difficult if not impossible with the way the decks are built. In modern for instance the only ones that really stick out as producing totally colorless mana consistently are tron and affinity. Maybe this will slot into tron somewhere as at very least it's a bad ramp spell. How many other decks can really make colorless mana that consistently?
I wonder what the flavor would look like for a planeswalker casting the spell?
Would it be different depending on the color of the mage casting it? Is it a burst of spell-melting heat from a red mage? Static interference? A wave of life energy disrupting the magical properties of the sorcery if a green mage is casting it? Is a black mage just angrily siphoning the sorcery? Or is it all just a uniform other-worldy wail that's the same for every caster? I've always wondered this for quite a few cards that could be cast in vastly different ways depending on mage. Ohh the flavor.
Nah, they just throw back their head and sing the song of their people the eldrazi.
This is going to help MUD extremely. Looking forward to seeing how quickly it moves from sideboard tech to 3-ofs in the mains of MUD. Also into any kind of colorless spot removal for modern Tron lists. Think about it... How many blue tron players waste a turn assembling tron because they need instant speed answers to threats and prioritize blue mana? This could cut the number of mulls down, and probably incentivise a turn one tron drop against a meta full of lil creatures. It also could just generate a blocker for big creatures... this card is a big deal.
I have neither the skill to correctly and accurately analyze this set in the context of current and future formats after 12 hours of exposure, nor the hubris to delude myself into believing that I do.
One of the big requirements to make colorless mana bases work was to have cheap control spells in colorless worth playing, and this is right up the ally, it makes cards like spawning bed and blighted fen and the painland cycle look that much better. This is pretty ridiculously versatile as far as charms go, way more pushed than I expected. It gives colorless decks access to ramp, removal and a counter all on the same 2 cmc instant. End of opponents turn 2 you can remove a dude they just played, or have already countered a sorcery, or if they did neither, EoT ramp +1 so you can lay a 4-drop as soon as you untap.
It also shreds all Infect creatures (before buffs), and most of D&T, including Mom, Thalia, Stoneforge, Mangara, Flickerwisp... shoot, pretty much everything except Brimaz and Serra Avenger. And since it's colorless, Mom can't stop it.

About Mindslaver rulings:
As a whole, this is an amazing tool and i want foils now.
Everyone should learn from this
Not sure how useful it will be in EDH though.
So now colorless really does matter, even in other formats.
This set really does have a sense of fun about it.
This sets power level sure dwarfs BFZ
