Fine spoilers here. Bone Saw's a fun little reprint that comes with the added bonus of enabling Surge. Pyromancer's Assault seems like the happy medium of this kind of effect between busted (Burning Vengeance) and unplayable (Pyroconvergence). Can definitely see it as a nice incentive for the surge deck. Boulder Volley is great limited removal, but for the most part outclassed by Roast.
Man, is Boulder Salvo bad? 4 damage to a creature only is something that has been costed R. The fact that you don't get that cost even with the alternate cost is just sad.
I'm calling it right now- worst rare in the set. Even good limited players will find better bombs at common and uncommon no sweat. Worst. Episode. Ever.
I really do predict this to be our worst rare in set award winner. I'd be happier opening a jar of eyeballs, so I think anything worse is highly unlikely. This card wont just have zero constructed potential, but not be significantly better than a mass of ghouls in a draft.
Eh, Salvo's bad, but it's about the level I'd expect on a common. Still definitely playable, I'd think.
Excited for Bone Saw, great Surge enabler and decent equipment.

Rage of Purphoros has been limited playable in the past. I'd expect Salvo to be quite the early pick in draft, though obviously it's not great beyond that.
These rock. If OGW has 60 uncommons there should be .8 Pyro Assualts per draft, compared to .9 Molten Nursery's in 3xBFZ, so it should show up about as much. I really hope there's sufficient support from the commons and uncommons for the "2 spells" archetype. Anticipate and Seek the Wilds are BFZ cards which should gain a lot of value if so.

I primarily play limited, so most of my spoiler season comments view cards through that lens.
Boulder Salvo offends me as a game designer. A 5 CMC Flame Slash in red is just taking the piss, even if it is sometimes merely a 2 CMC Flame Slash in red.

If you're half the game designer you purport to be you'd realize that this is pretty early pickable in limited, and probably really good in any surge deck. All commons are designed with limited in mind.
God I hope there's a viable limited deck to be built around Pyromancer's Assault.
This card SCREAMS "build-around-me" uncommon. My guess is that the deck it becomes awesome in is red/blue, has lots of Surge cards, and probably Jori En, Ruin Diver. But it will probably just not be good outside of that deck, like most of these kinds of cards.
If Salvo dealt 5 damage, was an instant, dealt damage to players, or cost 1 on the surge then I'd be fine with it, but right now it is really just kind of bad. Even with 1 of those improvements it still would be very mediocre.
Since players will usually just pay the Surge cost anyway, I don't see a problem with 4R. At least there's a means of casting it cheap, and a free enabler to boot.
On that note, Pyromancer's Assault works great with 0 drops, Rebound spells, and Dash creatures. I expect it to see some Standard play.

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

Commons should be designed with limited in mind, but that should mean they are just generally playable cards rather than combo-oriented or being dependent on synergies which may not be available. Commons should be staples for the sake of limited, while rarer cards can afford to be more niche cards. Justifying making mediocre commons on the grounds that the other commons you've made are also mediocre doesn't stand up to scrutiny when you could just make good commons.
On top of that, a Surge deck doesn't want Surge for the sake of Surge. A Surge deck wants two things: cards that are above-average if you play two cards in a turn, and cards that are good at enabling Surge. Jori En, Ruin Diver is a card Surge decks want, because the Surge mechanic naturally burns through your hand faster than normal, a disadvantage Jori En removes by giving you a replacement card whenever you play two spells in the same turn. Bone Saw is a card Surge decks want, because it's a 0 mana Surge activator. I'd much rather have Thunderous Wrath in my Surge deck than Boulder Volley.
