What an annoying card. I guess the one upside is that they can't get the 8/8 octopus if they have creatures in play they'd want to keep around, but then a lot of the creatures control wants to play have valuable ETB abilities anyway... Isn't blue supposed to be inefficient at creatures?
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.
i dont know bruh . . . seems quite boring & only strong in combination with somethin else. At least they harnessed the opportunity to Showcase us a new Keyword.
Can't believe I'm the first person to mention that they stole the Combo mechanic from Hearthstone. Old formats do tend to enable surge pretty easily, so I'm excited for the mechanic. This card not so much.

I primarily play limited, so most of my spoiler season comments view cards through that lens.
I actually really like this mechanic. It seems like it balances itself out subtly depending on what environment it's in. In 1v1, it's a bit tougher to cast another spell on top of 5cmc, and while it's much easier to pull off in 2 headed giant, that's an environment where a lot more fail-safe answers occur.

"Cares about having played another spell this turn" dates back to Tempest, not to mention Storm or similar mechanics. Even if you narrow it down to "Spell that has a bonus if you've cast another spell this turn", Eventide had a full cycle of cards that do that six years before Hearthstone came out, Dream Thief etc.
Personally, I don't think the stolen from hearthstone/stolen from mtg conversation is really productive for either fandom.
I suppose this is a mythic based on flavor and its strength in 2HG limited.
All of that said, I do like the card a lot from a flavor perspective and I wouldn't be too bummed out to open one. It's a better Devastation Tide and has the potential to be a lot of fun in limited, so ultimately I approve of its design and inclusion in the set (not that WoTC cares about that, hah).
This isn't a better Devastation Tide. With this spell, we are paying 3UU plus more mana towards another spell to Devastation Tide and get a large token with no evasion. Keep in mind it is usually counterproductive to cast a spell before playing a board wipe (especially at sorcery speed).
With Devastation Tide the most you'll ever have to pay is 3UU, but you can potentially miracle for only 1U which is very mana efficent. Also keep in mind Devastation Tide did not see much play and currently sees no play in EDH.
I don't see why this needs to be mythic and I'm kind of salty about it. This is another one of those mythics we are all going to open and be disappointed about unless we are playing limited. This could have been a rare.
This isn't the combo mechanic. Combo doesn't let spells cost less for having played more of them. Combo allows additional effects if the spell is played after another. Like Storm. Or Dream Thief, or Soul Reap. Which all predate Combo by years.
There's actually a lot of precedence for this kind of card that already exist in magic.
You played JESUS?!?! I heard none of his guys stay in the graveyard, and once you think you have him beat he ALWAYS comes back to win within three turns. I like...WORSHIP him.
This is a strong effect. If you think of it as an 8/8 for ~7 mana that bounces everything, that's pretty plausibly a Standard playable card, and the fact that you can Evoke it for 6 mana is nontrivial upside.
I'm looking forward to seeing what else they make with this mechanic.
Hello dig through time for full delve then this, clear your board, and they get an 8/8. Control just got better, which as a aggro/midrange guy, am a bit worried about
Lands are sacred and absolutely nothing should touch them EVER unless it's 5+ CMC for just a single land, period.

We do already have one with Imperial Mask, although it was getting lonely.
This is obviously how WotC feels for modern card design, but I hate this so much.
This card seems like it could be strong. I'll be interested to see whether it makes it a mark in constructed or not.

Yup, if there's one lesson we have learned so far it's that playing a lot of spells to get an advantage is really bad. The mechanic obviously sucks...

Is this a joke? Yes, upheaval is too strong.
This card is awesome though, even un-surged it is useful, but combined with a cheap spell its surge becomes pretty devastating.
That said, I'd probably pick this in a draft.
Dunno about Constructed... too slow for Modern, maybe when Ugin rotates in Standard?
