I like this card, but I actually wish it only gained 1 counter per lifegain event. As it is, I think it's too easy to build around, and will be really annoying to play against. I like my commanders to be a little janky, I'd much prefer if this effect was more of an "every once in a while you get a free kill spell" rather than just "build around this and have limitless unmakes."
Gaining life in commander is already worse than it is in other magic formats for more than a few reasons. It's usually a waste of cards and–worse–makes you a target. People who try to exploit his abilities too much will end up with weak decks, but good decks centered around him will include cards that otherwise would be overshadowed. To me, that makes him a very good addition to the multiplayer commander format.
That's true, I guess I'm just worried that, since excessive lifegain already makes you a target, you probably don't want to further make yourself a target with this guy. That's why I wish he was a little more low-profile. Though on the other hand, you're not going to be playing massive amounts of lifegain as much as you're going to be playing small, incremental life like Tablet of the Guilds and Pristine Talisman.
I'm really interested in seeing the full BW deck list now. There is no overlap in synergy between daxos and this guy, so I really want to know how WOTC is going to make it feel like a cohesive deck.
There is synergy; but, the deck needs a crop of good cards to pull it together. Right now, this deck needs to have some strong Soul Sisters (praying for an Auriok Champion but I know it's not going to happen), Underworld Coinsmith, Nyx-Fleece Ram, and a couple of other life gainers that also connect with enchantments.
He looks powerful but a little one dimensional. I worry that building a deck jammed with lifegain will end up durdling a little too hard, "I need a board wipe or a tutor but i keep drawing life gain cards!","I'm gaining lots of life but not actually doing anything".
I think things like Greed are a pretty direct solution to that problem. Also, the fact that there are so many lifegain effects and so many +1/+1 counter effects tacked on to other things means you have a number of directions you can go... this is one that looks like a lot of fun to brew with.
