Actually, Hardened Scales won't work with Awaken, as you are putting those counters on a land, not a creature. The land becomes a creature after it has placed +1/+1 counters on it. If the land has already Awakenend, then it does work as it is already a creature before.
That's what I figured - its just the timing which is weird - since it isn't a creature when the effect begins - but it is a creature when the effect ends (which is when Hardened Scales would trigger) I wasn't quite sure. Thanks.
I wonder if this is a unique spoiler season, with the good rares saved till last?
Deathrite Shaman was the last rare revealed for RTR, but RTR had its share of good stuff spoilered early. Don't think saving ALL good rares for the end of spoilers is a good idea, since such set would get very bad reviews for majority of spoiler season.

Well, if they didn't save the best till last, then this spoiler season will suck
id prefer 2 Ojutai. Merfolk is not bad, but just not thy Type of finisher i enjoy. BFZ . . . i dont know. (except the Planeswalkers, especially Gideon & couple other cards)

If Hardened Scales was a trigger... it would work
it's a replacement effect, it tries to replace the effect of putting X counters with X+1 counters if the permanent receiving counters is a creature, which it's not.
I kind of like the merfolk, I think people are underrating him... *cough* jeskai ascendancy *cough*
You know, that's the deck I first thought of when I saw the card, but I'm kind of skeptical. Awakened lands work so well with JA, but is it actually better than just casting Ojutai?

Well, the lands do have haste, so assuming you have 6 lands on turn 6 and a whole bunch of cantrips, it might just finish the game on the spot. Still feels very unstable/unrefined though, would need a lot more testing and tweaking to prove whether it would work out or not.

Anybody catch the " We made a new cycle of "spell lands" that enter the battlefield tapped but have an enter-the-battlefield effect." comment in the article about the merfolk? WHAT ARE THEY!!!!??? I hope they are good.

RIP Batman guy. I hope somebody picks up the slack now that you are gone. Sick children need their Batman.
I'm not sure which ones I like more. Sam Barley or Noah Bradley. Only clear winner there is Bradley's swamp, the others are a coin toss. Although, I'll probably stick with Meignaud for the mountains.
Endless One is actually kind of scary. It's a make your own monster that literally any deck can just throw in, for Ula's sake! People are talking about it at 7 or 8 but it's solid at 5 or 6 too. It has no fancy bells or whistles but it would be too powerful if it had any abilities. Imagine this guy with reach or vigilance. Those are two of the more mundane abilities but on a creature of indeterminate size they could actually be relevant.

It's a rules thing. If the land was animated before the counters, it would go to the grave immediately as a state based action, as a 0/0 without buffs dies to state based checks.
...You guys do know that some sets are supposed to be weaker in power level than others, right?
Anyways, a lot of their decisions seemed geared towards making limited fun more than serving constructed. I don't think it's a problem that rares aren't game winning bombs, considering how not having game winning bombs is something that makes constructed more balanced. Besides, it's more the job of rares to be complex and flavorful than straight up powerful.
Yeah, I hope people keep dissing the merfolk, because the more I think about him, the more I see potential when you untap. Jeskai Ascendency is one thing, but pretty much any cheap cantrip becomes crazy when it creates a hasty 3/3 on top of drawing you a card. I can see playing this on 6 keeping a mana for a protection spell (and a free 3/3). untap with JA in play is probably game-over.

The set hasn't even been spoiled yet...
Hope is fading but there's still 100+ cards left
Who cares, it's got new duals that have basic land types and full art lands. People will buy it anyway.
Personally, I'm just happy about Oblivion Sower for my EDH Oona deck.

It's simple, really- GU is NEVER allowed to have a Legendary Creature which isn't part of a cycle of Legendary Creatures.
Reprint Stasis!
Control needs more love.

See, this is what irks me most. Wizards probably thought this to themselves, upgraded a bunch of Uncommon stuff in rarity and called it a day. Ugh.

Well, the fans of kamigawa like me care. Tangolands Are ok but overrated.
