Anyone worthy of owning one of these should know exactly what they do without any cues beyond the name-
I'm talking from the perspective of being the opponent, seeing such a card on the other side of the table and far enough - and upside down from my point of view - that the name isn't easily readable.
But *groan* if you must.
I suppose.
But there are already a number of textless cards, as well as innumerable foreign language cards.
I would agree with you if these were the "normal" versions of the cards,
but they're meant to be special.
Personally, I would much rather have to explain the card (or even show my opponent a copy of the "normal" version)
than look at that 100% unnecessary text box.

I like the border and background so much I am trying to replicate it in high quality on photoshop
Hello, Scalding Tarn!
I remember that art from the previews, but seeing it like this makes it rather obvious what it is.
Also- I like your version of that border more than I like theirs!
Hah, thanks!
As for the art. Notice the white part on the ground? Its supposedly the mana deprivation effect the eldrazi seem to provoke. I think this is the point of this piece of art. Something I think is not supposed to show up in the dual lands nor fetchlands. Also, I was thinking more of breeding pool than scalding tarn But the lack of vegetation rules it off.
Every time I look at the desiccated white land, I think this would be such a perfect place for a Wasteland reprint. Then I get sad knowing it won't happen.
I'd love for that to be the new Scalding Tarn art! The original is kind of hard to make out as a lake i.e. tarn, where as that is clearly scaldingish and tarny.
Anyone worthy of owning one of these should know exactly what they do without any cues beyond the name-
...
But there are already a number of textless cards, as well as innumerable foreign language cards.
None of the existing textless or foreign cards will ever be opened up by a random casual in a midwest Wal*Mart. Cards available only through hobbyist channels have more leeway for assumption of consumer knowledge than items that will be in department store boosters. And there is no 'worthiness' check there. It's just luck. And if someone lucks into a card that says it's a Swamp and Forest named Overgrown Tomb, they may think they can play it like a Bayou because... Why wouldn't they? If it did something weird, the card would say so right on it, just like every other card they've ever opened in a booster.
Oh love these art and love the idea of an eldrazi temple for Godless Shrine.
I guess I'm in the minority but I like the text boxes. They could have done been better but I can't rember every cards name and when you toss in alternet arts its worse, so I like to see the text and know "right this is the W/B shockland".

Yeah, the "desiccated" part seems like it *should* have some significance, and is probably why I initially misinterpreted that art.
However, it fits in that frame too perfectly to not be one of the Expedition cards, and Tarn is definitely the closest match of what's left.
I think you inadvertently mocked up the most valuable card of the set!

You mean like how Marath can activate his ability for 0?
No you can't. And what is that a reply to?
the guy who claims that players out in the middle of nowhere buying cards from Walmart will play them as written, which is why we can't have textless cards in boosters; they might think to play a shock like a true dual.
You mean like how Marath can activate his ability for 0?
No, I'm not comparing a deliberate printing of a textless card to an accidental oversight on a printed card. Marath was a mistake and was errated, which has an unfortunate effect on casuals who might never see the errata, but that doesn't mean Wizards should start deliberately printing cards of unclear functionality to the department store market.

I see where you're coming from, but think of it this way:
These cards, which are clearly intended for the hardest of hardcore pimpers and collectors,
are made much less appealing to their intended audience because of unfortunate, unavoidable contact with casuals.
Maybe making these playable in Limited was a very bad call.

As I expected, the pics of the urban names are a failure overall. First the rock pineapple and now this.
I am starting to fear Sacred Foundry...or Blood Crypt.
Disagreed.
While I do agree that Hallowed Fountain is a bit lacking,
this one is nice (flavorwise, too),
and that Steam Vents is easily my favorite art that card has had.

I don't disagree with your other points, but I think they basically had to make them Limited playable. Having convoluted rules where some cards in your booster are able to be used in Draft/Sealed and others are not is even worse.
Imagine trying to explain that to a casual: sorry buddy! You can't play the land you drafted that slightly improves your manabase!
Also, the presence of these, rare as they are, will occasionally be cool in some tiny percentage of games.
Btw, do we know yet if these will exist on MODO?

The rest of the cycle will be in Oath. We don't know what they will be yet.
They've said they aren't redeemable, which I'm taking to mean they will exist there.
As for my previous comment- I'm not trying to say Casuals should never open these.
I'm just saying these cards aren't intended for Casual players, and as such,
it's not the end of the world if Casuals don't get full (play) value out of them.
They still get a super valuable card for their collection, or hefty compensation in trade.
Much as a Modern player has little right to complain about a product like Clash Packs,
a Casual player has little right to complain about these.
