Note if you play it on turn 3, often its merely a 2/2 with no protection until turn 4. A shock can take down your 3-drop.
Underwhelming mythic.
It definitely should go into the 4-drop slot when building a deck.
I think your right, but I was thinking of a competitive green deck, which makes a 2/2 as your 4-drop a death sentence. Control decks at that point have all the ammunition needed to exile or destroy him at that point.
Presumably you have a land in hand as you cast him on turn 4 or you could have cast him on turn 3; in that scenario you're going to play a land as soon as he resolves, so he's a 3/3 and a pain to remove. I agree he'll be difficult to get to resolve at times. He does play nice with Collected Company though in his favor. I like him in principle with Abbot of Keral Keep in a very low to the ground deck, with those two cards and maybe Den Protector as the top end.
I think he's pretty good, but I will fully admit to being a sucker for these kinds of cards.
This is like an Experiment One that costs 1GG. I don't see it being good enough. The aggressive decks that want this creature don't have all the extra land to take advantage.
I feel like at Mythic he should be able to dodge removal spells with his ability as well. I know they don't like regeneration but just stopping damage seems lame for a mythic.
Rarity isn't a measurement of power level; it's a restriction upon Limited. This guy would be a pain at rare, and bog everything down to hell at uncommon.
You spend three mana on a creature that must be removed. That means you break even advantage-wise, but your opponent is down a removal spell. If they don't remove it, it will just get bigger and bigger with zero mana input from you, and it can literally tank anything in combat. The abilities and power-level aren't that flashy, but it's costly for an opponent to remove.
And that's just by itself. Trample makes it amazing. Slap hexproof on it, and you have a virtually indestructible wrecking ball. Give it deathtouch, and you have the best blocker on the planet. Not mention all the +1/+1 counter/fat creature support we just got in Khans.
This guy deserves mythic status because we do NOT want to see every single person pulling it at Limited or Draft.

While most of the time you're correct rarity also has to do with complexity and at mythic level you get into designs that are strange or outright powerful. Remember Voice of Resurgence? That was supposed to be Emmara Tandris but they didn't want to have one of the maze runners at mythic while the rest were rares so they put a mythic design on another card and put Emarra where she belonged, unfortunately for her. Rarity also has financial effects. Granted it might not mean as much in this set because of the hype of Zendikar and the expeditions but normally strong mythics can be very costly. Look at Deathmist Raptor who has been $20 since basically the time he was printed but similar cards from Khans were cheaper because Dragons wasn't opened as much.
This would be fine as a rare. He wouldn't show up nearly enough to make him a pain. I mean yeah he's definitely not uncommon but like I said at Mythic I think he could stand for the extra protection I mentioned before.
I think the card deseves more credit. With anahilator not coing back this little guy walls eldrazi effectivly doges red removal, doesn't trade with dethmist raptor, and has the potential to take over the game on an empty board. I suspect dethmist will be picked over this guy for most occasions but he should find a place in standard even if it's in a teir 2 deck. In limited he seems stupid good.

With Hardened scales on the battlefield, this guy turn 3, turn 4 play a fetch, he gets 2 counters. Fetch, 2 more counters. Cast Explosive Vegetation, he gets 4 more counters.
He's a 10/10 on turn 4.
Imagine casting him with Anamist's awakening... this guy can get huge quick.
Yet, it just a dumb big beater that require a lot of work and can be still chumped for days. When your best case scenario is just a 10/10 with no evasion that required 2-3 cards to work and such linear plays, then you know this is not THAT good.
I can understand everyone's apprehension to see this guy as a good creature, let alone a good mythic. But coming from someone who has played a G/W Hardened Scales deck (check sig) in standard for the last 2 months I am pretty damn hyped for this card. In a deck that really cares about +1/+1 counters this guy gets out of control fast. I like to compare him to Managorger Hydra because they fit a similar role. Both grow very fast but at the cost of being a slower build up Undergrowth Champion is resistant to red removal and will almost never be killed as a blocker/attacker in combat, the major trade-off being the lack of trample. I will have to play with this card in combination to the hydra to know if he is a good fit but I am pretty sure this card is going to do some major worth come rotation.
This card seems overcosted for 3 mana, another mythic slot wasted. At best it's a turn 4 play that will get chumped all day. At least give him trample!
With the Phantom Nataku, if you had a generic anthem effect it would technically never die to damage because of how it's worded. Even if u drop him on turn 4, he can still get shocked in response.
This card seemed really weird for being a mythic. Then again wizards has a lot of love for counters so like someone else was saying with fetches and ramp it can get dumb. But at that point I rather play the one mana green kitty with landfall.

To the people that say that a card needs to be a higher rarity because of Limited... I hate you guys so much. I present to you with this.

Well it's not like those would be the only cards in the deck. You build the deck around the counters and landfall. Just being a big dumb beater is pretty solid if you only have to invest 3 mana into it. It's not like you're enchanting it with a bunch of Auras.
It is basically unbeatable unless you have a card that has a "destroy target creature" effect
For Limited it cannot be at anything less than Mythic
So that's why Sagu Mauler (as an example) is Mythic, huh? Being hard to beat doesn't make something Mythic. Besides for Limited Rare and Mythic aren't separated by much.

No it's not worth to brew around. You need to commit too much resources (and use some really bad cards, as some you mentioned) to make it good, but the resusts are lame, it would be better just use good cards instead of a louse synergy that can be easly dealt with.
The small resilience against damage is not that relevant in a format with Ultimate Price, Abzan Charm and some other very strong removals, and it still dies the turn it ETB against instant speed burn (Wild Slash). And to make it worse it's 1GG instead of 2G, at 1GG i would play Deathmist Raptor all day before adding one of those, and i would add Managorger Hydra before this if i wanted a creature thar continuously grows, because the hydra can't be chumped as this one.

We had many cards that needed a "destroy target creature" answer before at lower rarities that didn't ruin limited. In fact i never saw a card being bumped from rare to mythic exclusively due to limited. Rare is where the limited-only-powerhouses should be.
Are you seriously comparing this to Predator Ooze? Did you read the cards?
Both are creatures that continously grows and are "basically unbeatable unless you have a card that has a "destroy target creature" effect" (in Ooze case it need to be a exile effect or -X/-X effect, and it doesn't dies to burn in response to the first trigger).
So why not compare them? On limited both will most likely grows at the same rate and plays the same role (attack each turn until all the opponent blockers dies, not to mention that Ooze will not shrink from being chumped). This one is not more threatening than Ooze.

No big deal. This will be fun in limited landfall decks.

Explain to me again how a Shock takes down this card.
Because it's a 2/2? He specified that if you play it on turn three. That means you don't have a land drop to bump him to a 3/3
Shock Deals 2 damage.
The creature has 2 toughness.
It ain't rocketscience buddy

The landfall cat, Nissa, Servant of the Scale are cards to build with it. Tuskguard Captain gives the creatures trample. Collected Company works great with all these creatures. Abzan Falconer, Abzan Ascendancy is could make things interesting as well.
Its a great card worth trying to brew around.
Way, way, way too strong in Limited
How so? There are what? 30 or so rares in a large set? At uncommon it would be way to strong but this guy would be totally fine at rare.
