Weird choice. Perhaps its pseudo-protection is meant to signal the direction wotc will be going with protection more often in the future? (Since they are demoting it from evergreen and only piledriver will have true protection in the set.)
Powerful rare. Glad it's not mythic. Funny because this card is a million times better than that crap Aurora mythic. Wizards' take on what should be a mythic and what should switch to rare lets me know that they will never truly know what cards deserve that red-bronze symbol.

Aurora may not be a power card, but do you really think it shouldn't be mythic and this should be? I 100% disagree with you. Huge, world-altering ridiculous effects SHOULD be mythic. Fatties can and sometimes should be, but definitely don't need to be. (This never felt particularly mythic to me, but is an ok choice for one I guess, but I'm still glad it was down-shifted.) Random utility weenies (ahem Lotus Cobra) really shouldn't be, even if they are tier 1 tournament cards, and wotc's stated description of what makes a card mythic definitely supports the Aura being mythic.
This seems quite strong to me- 8 immediate damage that doesn't die to removal or countermagic is at best an Abyss against control, and at worst game over. They have one turn to Crux (which only gets funnier if people switch over to Languish), or they probably lose. 5 toughness is enough to profitably attack into all of Abzan's creatures while obviously being immune to their removal, so if the meta ever gets really control heavy in the new format this is a decent top end of any ramp deck, but it will really shine as a sideboard staple- this is about as good a late-game topdeck as you could ask for after the Control player thinks they've locked the game down, and with the sole exception of Thoughtseize they have no way to interact with it at all. I'm really liking what Wizards is doing with the reprints in this set- nothing format-breaking, but plenty of useful, interesting cards.
And I also love their approach to rare vs. mythic- I don't want to spend 100 dollars on one playset for Red Deck Wins because Piledriver was printed, and I don't want a decent card like this to be 10 or 20 dollars just because it's a playable mythic. We'll be able to pick these up without spending our whole budget, and same goes for The Great Aurora which goes straight into my Omnath deck.
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.

I agree that this set seems to be better that the other core sets of the past. It's kind of a shame it will be the last. I enjoy how the cards all seem somewhat interesting and playable. There's nothing that seriously stands out as boring or useless.
I expect the Revenge to maybe be an important card for the future of standard. It's pretty beefy and can "seal the deal" quickly.
well, this is ridiculous. A creature that can't be countered, hits immediately FOR 8 (!!!), eats rhino and tasigur, trades well with the things it does trade with, and is virtually unkillable. I expect this to see standard play, a very awesome reprint by wizards.
Even with things on the board, I'm not sure how I deal with this as a Control player. The best bet is probably trading with Ojutai, but for this next year players will attack with Ojutai into Dig into Silumgar's Scorn and Hero's Downfall and be reaching for their sideboard only to have this come down and finish the deal.

OTOH this set has really shown a lot of material that just WRECKS control possibly too much...

And ya, both Demonic Pact and the Great Aurora are obviously Mythic cards. I do find the name choice on The Great Aurora a bit odd.
When you play this the soundtrack should MC Hammer - Can't Touch this.

Yeah this is more meant to punish the "hand full of counterspells and nothing on the board" type of decks
