Well, Gerrard Capashen has been largely outclassed. Yeah, he's still got lifegain, but the Irregulars have renown and better tapping. I wonder if this will be the second rare in the white Intro Pack?

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
This is interesting for sure, but requiring 4 white mana to use the ability twice is basically unreasonable if you're not mono-white. I guess you can more or less think of it as a tapper that doesn't tap itself rather than a repeatable one. Obviously very strong in limited, and might be standard-worthy.
For some reason, I just really dont care about any of the white cards Ive seen from Origins. Gideon is pretty cool, but besides that Im not really feeling it.
This is obviously powerful, but doesnt wow me. At all.

The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost. The true heart can tough the poison of hatred without being harmed. Since beginning-less time, darkness thrives in the void but always yields to purifying light.
I invision a future where one is not mighty when he can silence a crowd with brutality,
but when he leaves them speechless with wisdom.
Heh. So those are the Irregulars that Desperate Stand refers to
Whoa, Kytheon's name was mentioned back during Theros? Did we know who he was?
I don't think we were explicitly told at the time, but it seemed unlikely that a name with such similar pronunciation (bearing in mind that "Jura" and "Iora" are pronounced identically in many languages) was just a coincidence.

Well, that is yet to be revealed in the origin story.
But one guy (my friend Andethir) caught the Kytheon Iora - Gideon Jura possible connection almost immediatelly when that card was revealed, a year ago. And it was confirmed by the first screenshots from Duels:Origins.
Just now, we know that he started as a street urchin and a kind of little punk, who later become a hero of Akros.

What exactly is the point of Renown? I kind of thought all of the Renown cards would have an ability that turned on or became better once the creature was renowned. On a creature like this, the ability is just a much worse version of cards like Bloodcrazed Neonate since it can only trigger once.

Really? I am loving white in this set. Starfield of Nyx is by far my favourite card in Origins, and likely in my top 10 cards of all time. Also lots of powerful cards for limited I can't wait to try out.

Being renowned presumably also turns on renown matters cards, like Enshrouding Mist, besides +1/+1 counters matter cards. I'm not a fan of the mechanic myself though.

They didn't care that he was the savior of Fort Keff, the great hunter of Ondu, the champion of Kabira. To them, he was just another piece of flesh, a thing with life to be drained away.

I see it as a similar ability as Bloodthirst or Unleash: It's just a way of giving a one-time bonus to a creature. This happens to have the added bonus of potentially triggering abilities, like with the equipment-fetch dude.
I also wouldn't be surprised to see an uncommon that gives you some bonus for each Renowned creature you control.

Formerly Angrypossum over at the now-defunct WotC forums.
Now this is the kind of card I want to put into play with Preeminent Captain. Taps down blockers to give you a very good shot at netting a 5/4 that can continue to push blockers out of the way if it sticks around.

Because Renown is only a one-time bonus, you can make cards that probably would have been too strong with the Neonate-ability.
Edit: Also, the "Neonate" ability is very strongly tied to vampirism, so it can't be done in colors like white or green.

I like it. It's not all too likely to hit Standard right away like some of the other cards we've seen, but it may just pop up randomly one day. It's not badly size (in fact, once it is renowned, it actually has a pretty good body to it), and in a Selesnya or Mono-White deck, the tap activation cost can do work to keep the pressure up. Of course, like always, it's competing for probably the worst spot of all time: the four-drop. The land of Siege Rhino, Surrak, Sorin, Butcher of the Horde, Thunderbreak Regent...this is its biggest opposition for entering the scene.

The beauty of renowned is that it can interact on two levels: With cards that care about +1/+1 counters, and cards that care about renowned creatures. That gives it both external and internal relevance.

A good friend of mine completely misses this. All he sees is that it uses +1/+1 counters and he calls it uncreative and a bad sign for the game and I could see where he was coming from. Once I saw that renown can matter in ways outside of being self-referential I couldn't even agree with the sentiment. Renown may basically be monstrosity with a different trigger but it is so, so much deeper.
I guess I'm just getting tired of all of these "new" mechanics that are basically Wizards coming up with every way imaginable to put a +1/+1 counter on a creature. It's just boring in my opinion. At least on cards like this that do nothing to take advantage of it.

Limited bomb, obviously. As is anything that has continuous tapping available. At least the WW activation cost is holding it back.

That means this card is beatable, at four it could have been bonkerz (in limited)
