I like it. First turn you can play him, then second turn you cast Raise the alarm or two more one-drops and then attack on the third turn. In theory he could flip on turn two if you started out with a hand that had two ornithopters and dropped them on your first turn.
Hmm, just thought of something. If you and your opponent have Kytheon, Hero of Akros out and your opponent attack with Kytheon and two other creatures, does your Copy Transform at the end of combat as well?
No, whenever a card uses its own name in its text, it's understood to mean "this object" and not anything else.
It usually doesn't seem unintuitive until we get legendary creatures dripping with flavor with distinctive identities like this.

You could also play him in a R/W deck with Lightning Berserker and/or Monastery Swiftspear if you reeeeally want to flip him on turn 2. I don't think you even have to build around him so much. A 1-drop that puts as much pressure as Gideon does is very likely to make a splash.
Right on curve for an aggressive 1-drop, then turns into an indestructible 4/4 later. Sounds really good. However, I can't wait to see RDW sideboard an Act of Treason and just laugh

I love it! After the initial high of Liliana and the let down of the following three, this guy definitely redeems the cycle to a degree.
He seems great in a W/x weenie deck in Standard. Attacking with three creatures turn three happens more often than one might think. I think 90% of the time it's going to be attack/flip and then keep attacking with him as a 4/4, but the other abilities might be useful late game ( "Hey, Seige Rhino, over here!" )
He also has some use in some W/x EDH tokens decks. Given as wrathy as EDH tends to be, the indestructible abilities become a lot more relevant.

No. When a card calls itself by name it is self-referential, as in it is only talking about itself and no other versions of that card that may be in play.
I really, really like this card and plan on pre-ordering a playset and building whatever deck fits them best. Great card, I'm very impressed. I doubt it's going to be incredibly over powering, but it is very good regardless.
Man, this guy is really good. A little annoyed of my guess of something like a 4 drop 3/3 that brings in soldiers with him was wrong. Really wanted a new control walker. Anything to make UW control good again...
I'd probably like him more if he never flipped. Still good enough if there is a white focused aggessive deck.
Unlike say, Jace, it's hard to argue the planeswalker side is worse than the creature side. I'd much rather have the 4/4 with free indestructibility than a 2/1 I must pay for indestructibility.
Planeswalker for white weenie. Turns into a threat that can't be killed with boardwipes like chandra. Has no removal mode, but can make your other creatures unkillable (and able to block the turn he flips). He can remove blockers with the +2 and help you trade up, but that's likely not as good as just bashing for 4.
I find it awkward that he doesn't give vigilance rather than untapping. It means that the creature you use to protect Gideon has to live through combat naturally if you want a free attack.

I guess the idea is that you can use this ability when he flips on one of the guys he attacked with.
While his last ability will be use the vast majority of the time, his +1 can actually be pretty good in a RW deck to get a safe swing of a high power/low toughness creature like Goblin Rabblemaster (who also is good for flipping him) or Chandra (though she prefers mono red, a light splash for a few cards like him might work)
His only problem is the decks that would love to have his walker side for 3cmc (jeskai tempo for example) don't nessecarily want to be dumping three attackers early and swinging.
He is the absolute best possible for white aggro though, any better would be broken (if he isn't already)
Wizards print good rares, players complain about cash grab. They print underwhelming rares, players complain that the cards suck. They spoil the best cards first, players complain about the insane prices of preorders. They spoil the meh cards first, players complain that this is the worst set ever.
So. I think I understand now.
As far as these forums are concerned, WotC can never do anything good because:
Card that is new and probably good = "pushed"
Card that is new and probably bad = "EDH/casual fodder"
Card that is a reprint = "lazy"
Card that is a better version of an older card = "power creep"
Card that is a weaker version of an older card = "worthless"
Right on curve for an aggressive 1-drop, then turns into an indestructible 4/4 later. Sounds really good. However, I can't wait to see RDW sideboard an Act of Treason and just laugh
...do you mean laugh because "lol oops I didn't read the card?" It says "exile then return under its owner's control" and using a card to "force-flip" a creature seems ill-advised.
Reminds me a lot of Figure of Destiny, and IMO compares favorably in aggro decks.
Figure is a 1 drop that swings for 2 early and 4 midgame after you feed it 3 mana in one hit. Kytheon swings for 2 early (without needing the sometimes-awkward 2nd mana) and should be able to swing freely into most boards when you have battallion (because of the indestructible activated ability).
The hard part will be getting to a gamestate where the Battallion attack doesn't come at an unacceptable cost (in terms of your other creatures dying stupid deaths).
Edit: Oh and the taunt ability is aggressive, even if it wasn't on Gideon 1.0. A creature that attacks Gideon isn't staying back to block Gideon's counterattack.
Really good, possibly the best of the five, and likely to be a top-dollar mythic in Origins.
I am amused that his planeswalker side upticks for no benefit, though... He's got a +2, a +1 and a 0... so you get 15 loyalty counters on him, and then... Instagram it for posterity? Just feels a bit weird when they could easily have been three zeroes.

Well the counters gives him more life when the oponent tries to burn or attack him so its not useless

I'm wondering what Gideon's "ignition" card will be.

Heroic wouldn't be too great because you'd lose the effect of whatever you targeted him with when he comes back as a Planeswalker.
T2: Mountain, Monastery Swiftspear, dash Lightning Berserker, attack, flip to Gideon, +2, GO.
Is this line worth it in exchange for a worse mana base? Maybe not, but this is good fun.
"Kiora is the Aquaman of planeswalkers."
"Useless and everyone pretends to like her?"
Yeah, I'm trying to figure out how a 4/4 indestructible creature isn't aggressive.
