Instead of having 5 normal packs and 1 seeded pack, they're doing 6 packs of ORI and 1 7-card seeded pack based on which planeswalker you choose.
I suppose this is a decent compromise between newer players who find the seeded pack valuable, and more experienced players who prefer a normal Sealed environment.
Yup. I'm guessing that the 7 cards in the seeded pack will be entirely within the color of the 'walker you choose, maybe with 1 or 2 as part of a cycle. It will probably decrease the impact of the seeded pack on your deck; I'm guessing we'll see a lot more players playing outside the color of the prerelease pack that they chose.
The pack's theme does not guarantee a specific Planeswalker card.
I found this interesting, seems to imply there's at least a chance of getting a planeswalker in the seeded pack. Also story booklet sounds much better than achievement card + some other random piece of card.
I don't understand the point of doing a themed box if you're not going to do something to encourage playing on the theme. I mean at the DTK Prerelase two of my friends chose Dromoka but ended up in GR instead. It was pure luck that I opened a Narset and an Ojutai in my normal packs after picking the Ojutai box. If you're going to give people the idea that they can pick and play a theme but not give them the tools to do so what's the point? Either do a normal sealed environment or I would say increase the number of seeded packs. I mean I go to the prereleases with the idea that I picked the theme that most appeals to me and that I'm going to play that deck. Seems like not getting to do that because your five normal packs had no playables in that color or colors leads to some serious feelbads.
Either make no theme boxes and give people 6 normal boosters and let everyone pray for some decent pulls or give people themes to chose from and give them the tools to actually do so.
BTW I like the boxes and would personally advocate for making them better not worse like this update seems to do.
Glad to have a smaller impact from the seeded packs. Prior seeded packs making it "reasonable" to have on-color cards in 3x-4x quantities commonly was pretty bad for enabling casual pre-release substitution cheating. I miss Starter Packs, since you *knew* there was a hard limit on the number of each card a player could have due to their structure, so no "oops I totally opened the 4 Abzan Charm pool teehee."
Would be interesting if, since we're back up to 6 packs, the 7-card pool is a fixed set of 7 alternate-art cards for the walker in question (Not the walker itself, of course), since they've been doing the alternate-art prerelease promo stuff a couple of way recently.
I wonder if the seeded pack still contains a rare. I doubt it, but you never know!
It does say "7-card seeded booster pack, including a stamped promo card," which I can only imagine would be a rare.
Please please PLEASE go back to the "five prerelease cards" system, instead of the "forty prerelease cards" system.
I really hope they don't go back to that system! Only because at the dragons of Tarkir prerelease I opened a promo dromoka, promo ojutai and promo atarka in 3 different prerelease packs I played that day! You could say I am lucky I suppose
I guess I wouldn't mind them going back to the five though. It's just a little repetitive when you battle the same colors and fight the same Rares. They better be alternate art at the very least.

Definitely do not want this. It would be best if they returned to the universal promo system (pre-RTR), but the "pick your promo" thing they did during RTR/THS was by far the worst configuration.
The RSR/THS system was the worst. There was always one better promo, it was fought over, and you would get beat by it all day. No thank you. They aren't going to give us good mythics like a few years ago so the universal promo is a bad idea unless you want moosilver spears and other garbage.
For the last block we have been getting actual Value from the promos. There are more rare foils floating around of the new stuff for me to get for my cube, and foil mythics! Also there were 40 ways your box could turn out so people just picked what they liked playing. I wish the system would never change.
Now for a mono colored set you don't need as much in your seed pack. I really hope the 7 card pack has a foil rare with 1/8 ish being the planeswalker.

I concur that the universal promo system was best. I think that my preference would be a handful of non-rare limited role-players in the seeded pack. Chasing down nonrare promos seems easier than trying to basically collect a full foil rare set.

Awesome move. I don't think I know anyone who says they like the 5 boosters + chuddy fixed garbage. I can't begin to count the number of times I've not played the seeded pack colours, and essentially had a dead pack in my pool.
The MSRP for DTK was also $25.99 WOTC raised all of their prices for wholesale customers this January. The prepacks are the only product that actually has a raised MSRP as well. Stores that sell MTG have had to take a hit on margins or are forced to raise prices above MSRP. I'm seeing big box stores charge $4.19 for boosters and higher prices for precons and fat packs. This is an issue that players need to be aware of if they want to understand why retail prices are higher and why some game shops are struggling to stay afloat.

And let's be honest that it's been a long time since Wizards straight up raised pack prices.

Doesn't seem that bad for 6 boosters in sealed.
If the price was higher... then maybe not.
