A friend texted me last night absolutely fuming. He opened a box that contained zero mythics, 3 copies each of All Suns' Dawn and Horde of Notions, and the fourth most valuable card in the box were the two copies of Remand he pulled.
Good to see the disastrous pack distribution issues from the first Modern Masters are still present here.

I have no idea if this was intentional or not, but I hope it wasn't. This sort of exceedingly rare massive bonus is not a pro-consumer marketing strategy. It's like those all-foil Hellvaults from the Avacyn Restored prerelease which were worth tens of thousands of dollars, as opposed to the other 99.9% of them, which were nearly worthless.
Booster packs are already random enough. Let's not make them even more random.
It apparently happened again today at the same shop after they opened a new case. Sadly I was about a hundred miles south at the time and did not get witness it actually happening, though a couple of players did show me their pulls.
It's so hard for me to calm down, I am EXCITED. My friend bought four packs and pulled four mythics, then another friend bought one pack and got a mythic. I bought three packs, and I got three mythics! Then someone else bought two more, others bought one, and I bought the rest in the box. Ten packs, ten mythics! The other people got a mythic in each of their packs too. This is so cool of Wizards to do. I got a goyf, a bob, a bitterblossom, holy ***** dude.
Not really. I spent 200$ on a box because they couldn't refund it after placing the order, got ~107$ in value. ******* comet storm and tezzeret. In my store it has been basically this break down per case.
1 Amazing box 3-5 mythics, good value from mythics and rares, few chases uncommons.
2 Mediocre Boxes 150-200$ Value.
2 Crap boxes 75-149$ Value.
I mean no joke, one guy got opened the box in front of us. Pulled a comet storm, foil comet storm, no other mythics, and only 1 good rare. So at least mine wasn't the worst box. We had a bunch 4 drafts fire at midnight thursday, 12 friday, then 4 saturday, and only 1 today.
Only 1 draft saturday had more value in the box than MSRP. We are ditching the remainder of our boxes on ebay. No one wants to buy them.
The wholesale price is about 145 or so to my knowledge, been trying to talk some people down from the msrp. The reasoning is probably because last MM was less at msrp and wizards got $0 of the price hike. So they raised msrp.

SonofaBith - Wizards was so excited about making the packaging for Modern Masters 2 recyclable, they decided to make most of the rares and all but 1 of the UC's recycle-bin ready too. Convenient!

I'll buy them all at $100 if you want to fire sale them.:)
The shops pay 135 a box, plus shipping. I own a shop. That's what I paid. I sold everything at MSRP. If other shops aren't lying about 145, then distributor choices are coming into play. They have to make a buck too.
I think we've reached the point where WotC needs to start guaranteeing a certain distribution of rares/mythics per box. Having some boxes with 1-2 mythics and others with 5-6 (or 24...now I know why mine only had 2) is just not fair. Way too much variance going on.

If this doesn't come across as entitled Sour grapes I don't know what does. There's already a guaranteed distribution. 10 Commons/3 uncommon/ 1 rare (land/premium depending on set) mythic are not guaranteed but based upon their printing you have a 1 and 8 chance of cracking one. Your box was just below average. You have to come to terms with that. If it was irregular in another way ie No rares, wizards from what I've seen handles things pretty well. But being jealous of 24 mythic guy because you were 1 short of the average/odds is just dumb because if the shoe was on the other foot you would not be making such statements as "let's make it fair..." If you need that third mythic to calm your mind I'll grab a comet storm and send it your way if you would like.
If Wizards can't engineer their booster distribution to ensure everyone gets above average value out of their booster box, what are we even paying them to do?

I would prefer if you took all the mythics in the set, randomized them, and sent me whichever one was chosen instead. After all, the odds of getting a Goyf are the same as a Comet Storm, right?
Other companies are able to guarantee distribution, so there's no reason WotC can't, as well. If they can guarantee the contents in a pack then they can do the same for a box.
WotC's distribution system is outdated, but as long as we accept it, it will never change.

Yeah, sadly wizards really messed this up and most of the people who buy the boxes are simply wasting their money and getting nothing good at all. $200 is still way to much for one of these boxes when most people are getting Mediocre or crap boxes. The price needs to go way lower to get most people interested in buying. The cheapest booster box on Ebay right now is $220. I read someone claiming the whole sale price is $143.76. Which is way too high for me to believe. I'd believe $90 and only because of the compete booster pack change. The price needs to keep dropping. If your usual box value is only $150 Let's say I have 3 mythics Vendilion Clique $40, Dark Confidant $40, Mox Opal $30, Then my two good rares are Noble Hierarch $30 and Cryptic Command, $30, That's only $170. That covers 5/24 boosters. Most of the other rares are worthless or have dropped so much because there is not actual demand and no one is buying them. Tarmogoyf is the only card propping this entire set up. Everything outside of Tarmogofy is dropping in price by a lot. Which leads me to believe that outside of this release event, and the grand prix's modern is not as popular as they thought.
The box price probably needs to be $150 to make it worth buying because you have such a high chance of not getting anything. One of my friends did a draft as his shop. Out of the three boxes opened only one of the three boxes was a amazing box. The other two were crap probably around $150 in value. The third box was supported by all of it's foil mythic rares, and foil rares. Foil Dark Confidant, foil Cryptic Command, along with a few other top rares that are not tarmogofy.
I can tell you that that 147$ is not far from what my store pays. I can't tell you the dollar amount because of contract stipulations, but that is pretty dang close. We sell packs for 10$ and Boxes for 220@ and make about 68$ A box (at the 220$ rate) after you consider taxes. We don't add sales tax at the register because it makes it easier for customers to do math in their heads when buying singles.
And if pack prices increased more so you can feel like you got a good box you'd be okay with this? Because I'm sure logistically it can be done but at a cost.
When Modern Masters 2015 first got close, I promised a price match of local brick and mortar stores. Initially, hype was high, and preorders were going for 290+ -- I'm sure everyone has similar stories. Then Channel Fireball and Starcity announced prices, and local game stores planned to adjust to suit. Regulars told me other stores were selling for MSRP, so that's what I did. Then the full spoiler for MM2015 came out, and everyone was pissed. I'm sure other stores had people trying to back out of preorders, and I, too, dodged a few bullets. Fortunately, most people felt that MSRP was at least fair -- till they opened their boxes. I opened one too -- wanted to get back into modern (it got me into Bogles). I didn't really recover MSRP, but at least I recovered cost. Other players were as feast or famine as is being discussed here. One player opened two foil rares and a regular rare in one pack. Two of the boxes were obscene. Most boxes were like mine - with maybe 200 in rares/mythics. A few were unfathomable duds. I'm expecting a much more cautious player base when Modern Masters 2017 comes out - should my hunch that this'll be a biannual event be accurate. MM3 will need to have a much improved pack estimated value for lightning to strike like it did for me on this one. Players won't be burned twice, should they feel burned this time around.
Going back to the discussion that WOTC prints the rares and Mythics on the same sheet, I wonder if they decided to do a test run printing mythics on a seperate sheet to iron out all the kinks before printing Origins. The reason why I think this could be the case is because Origins is going to have the 5 double faced mythic creature/plainswalker cards and I'm pretty sure they couldn't just print them on the same sheet as every other rare and mythic rare.

By the way I opened two of the same rare out of the same box which I'm pretty sure isn't supposed to happen. I played in a sealed MM15 event at my LGS and the six packs they gave me came from a single box that had just been opened. In them I got two Noble Hierarchs which is the first time I have ever opened two of the same rare in any limited tournament (However I'm not complaining as they as good as paid for the $60 event).
Okay, well I'm not SURE but I don't want to believe that someone out there didn't get any mythics in their box. The fetch in every FRF pack boxes and the JOU god packs were also met with skepticism so we'll have to see if this happened to anyone else. As Maro says, never deny cool things.
Just because you don't want to believe it doesn't make it untrue. Random distribution can work out well -- or badly.

It's quite a hassle though, especially when one is an end-user. We should be expecting a better quality product from a luxury like MM.
