Does anybody think Wilt-Leaf Liege is going to tank hard? And what about Noble Hierarch? I bought Wilt-Leaf for 15 bucks each about 6 months ago, now it's doubled up to 30. Hopefully it doesn't tank below what it was when I bought it six months ago. Noble Hierarch I bought a full playset of 6 months ago, and I paid 190 for that playset, so that's like 47 dollars each! I was considering unloading these right now, but the buy list prices are in the 20s, at best, maybe high teens, and I don't think it'll tank so hard that I can buy them again for less than that.
In all fairness, being in the middle of a spoiler season is a bad time to play the gambling game. I would not bother anymore with trying to dump stuff for profit, and buying low later. That ship has sailed a month ago. The only 'right' option now, is to buy into the cards you need in 2, 3, 4 weeks from now and hold on to what you have that you actually need to play.
Ps. It's funny how this practice is the self-fulfilling prophecy that's causing today's outrages prices. I wish more people would compare MTG in this era to the housing market of four years ago.
would also be nice if people played mtg as a game and not an investment
I only buy Magic cards to play with, I don't have more than a 4 copies of a single card that is worth more than a dollar or two. I only get cards if I want to try it in a deck. I just get the feel bads when I buy something at a very high price and then it tanks within 6 months or so. I mean, I get that lower prices are good for the game, but I just wish that I hadn't spent 1000 dollars on cards that if I'd waited 6 months I could have gotten for 500 or less instead. Part of the problem is, admittedly, that I haven't had a chance to ENJOY the cards yet, so the feel bad is extra strong. Just after I bought a bunch of cards for a couple decks I wanted to play, my wife got notice that her job was moving to a new state, so we on very short notice had to start preparing to move long distance, and I still haven't found a place in my new location to actually play anything other than standard, so all those cards I bought for legacy & modern decks have just been sitting unused pretty much since I got them. If I had actually been playing with them for these 6 months, I wouldn't feel too bad about how I spent more for them 6 months ago, because I got to enjoy them and play in events with them, etc. But I didn't get the chance to do that, so it just feels like I flushed the money down the toilet, since if I hadn't bought them then, and bought them now, I would have saved a fairly significant amount of money. But, you can't always plan life perfectly, I guess...
If the first MM was any kind of a gauge, the bottom will bounce back pretty fast. There was a one to two week window for sought after cards to drop the first time around. There should be more time this time based on the fact that the initial cost for packs is higher and there is more printed but I really don't think you wanna wait 6-9 months for cards like CC, NH, VC, Bob, etc.

I disagree. Get rid of them now and buy them back in 6-9 months when they'll be at their minimum. People are still buying Hierarchs and others at the high prices.
This is sound advice for staples in Standard that have a potential to grow elsewhere (be it Modern, EDH, etc.). However, for a product as this price trends move volatile - pyrotechnics volatile. This shortens the window for profiteering by a significant amount. Taking myself as an example, I will not be buying a Noble Hierarch for atleast a solid week or two after Modern Masters 2015 hits the consumer market. Why buy one now for 30 euro's (i'm European, I apologise), when I can get it for even less after a significant amount of more product (read: the GP weekend) has been openened?
And when it's bottom is hit, then you buy your playset. So will all almost everyone else. And then these cards will just stay in binders, away from the daily market, again. Just look up pricetrends during MM-1's release to see this in practice.
Cryptic Command was 30 at MM launch and 6 months later was 25 before spiking to 50 in a month. Vendilion Clique was at 50 at MM launch and after 6 months was 45 and spiked and steadily rose to where it is now Sword of Fire and Ice started at 30 and dropped to 27 over 5 months and held near there for another 5 months before rising to where it is right now Arcbound Ravager went from 22 to 15 over 8 months and jumped to 22
During all of these times you could find people buying at high and lower prices. I bought a ravager at 18 from a LGS and the same day bought one for 12 at a different LGS. There are NM ravagers for sale right now on eBay at 15 yet SCG is sold out of NM at 20. Just because you won't buy at the prices right now doesn'r mean somebody else won't

Hard to do that when it's so expensive compared to other games. Magic can be on par with some of the more expensive hobbies, such as golf or scuba diving. If you play with expensive cards, you invest or borrow them from someone who does.

Golf clubs aren't kept to sell on later generally.

Of course, golf clubs are manufactured to meet demand.

Considering the kind of money I've spent on car stuff, photography, and target shooting, this is probably the cheapest hobby I've been into in years. A couple hundred dollars for a deck I can keep using? I would burn through that much ammo in a weekend camping with the guys.
Wilt-Leaf Liege is probably the one that I look forward to, because I have a Knights deck. Wilt-Leaf Liege was getting snapped up for other Modern/Legacy decks, so there were fewer of these available for a tier 2.5 Knights deck.
Wilt-Leaf Liege is a very interesting card to find in MM2015.
It just recently became a player in modern. So this set seems to have been put together not long ago?
I think it's more of a coincidence than anything. This set would have been created way before the Pro Tour, so in reality it's probably just in there because they decided to have a hybrid mana theme in the set. Also, it was never a super cheap card, I'm sure it as at least $10-$15 at the time they added it into the set.
