About damn time this finally got a reprint. After Elspeth vs. Kiora missed this I didn't think we wouldn't be seeing this until they did a U/G Commander deck or we would never see it. Foils of this won't be too absurd.
Pricey card or not I wouldn't hate opening this as it is a fun card that is plenty useful, plus being printed in the new frame makes it look much better and may command a slightly higher price just for that.
Every Rare can't be gold, or the packs will go for $30.
Even if true, and I'd argue that's likely excessive, that's an artifact of too limited availability and too high MSRP - and not an argument against reprinting good cards.
Besides, better reprints will lead to lower singles prices regardless of gouging as the vendors don't pay more.
In fact the only way prices are going to come down is if the packs contain more than the MSRP worth of (current market value of) cards in the first place.
That's not the only way -- people could open packs to draft even if the expected current market value of a pack isn't at MSRP.
Guess it's mostly just a way less flexible Snapcaster Mage these days for decks that want that effect.
Yea the card could seriously cost 1 colorless less and would be a "real" card again, which would be fairly usefull then.
Theres simply too much competition in the 4 mana slot, and making it 3 mana would provide much real nice interactions in modern (Collected Company, self-bounce effects, and even putting a Splinter Twin on it would be awesome, but 4 mana just kills all of this as it makes every sequence of cards worse).
Sad, but its still a nice EDH card, even if its otherwise crap and worthless money wise.
I actually find myself wondering if Mystic Snake's presence means Momentary Blink is in here too. Then again, I'm not sure we have that much else that's especially Blink-friendly. And I'm certainly not seeing any Kamigawa snakes yet, so that's probably not the draft conceit it's in here for.

While that's definitely true the enjoyment value of the drafting experience doesn't (sadly!) translate into the lower singles prices.
The more chaff is printed, the larger part of the sales price of the product is shifted onto the non-chaff cards. Which means that the cards that we really want to drop in price won't (or at least not as much as they should), despite the increase in availability.
The extreme example would be if WotC did a singles print run of, say, a million Tarmogoyf and sold these for $200 a piece.
The card would see a massive increase in availability but the price would definitely still be $200. Or rather slightly less, based on people looking to cash out undercutting each other, but not drastically so.
Include a copy in every $20 Duel Deck sold on the other hand...
Old school mentality when the set was first spoiled. Print runs been increased and all cards at the rare level will tank. Noble hierarchs will be halved in value because of this set. No tarm won't drop to $45 where it belongs however it will go from $180 down to $100-120 range. Where do you get this $200 nonsense. Go go eBay my friend. You won't find anyone selling tarm for $200. Most can be found at $165 a piece.

I posit this card is *much* better than crap like Auriok Salvagers and Skeletal Vampire.

I definitely agree with you, but almost every spoil since Hierarch, Cryptic, and Fulminator have been junk rares and/or see no Modern play whatsoever.

This seemed like a good opportunity to update the art as well. Commander staple though so that's nice
