To assume a collector is opening cards with the intent of doing anything except framing his collection as Gem mint is irresponsible.
And here I thought the intent of opening gaming cards was to be able to play the game....
I'm assuming that's why Luck said "collector" and not "player".
MTG is a Collectible Card Game,
and there are definitely people who collect the cards,
but never play with them.
I would say I collected many cards from different trading card games and never used them, and from personal experience from a trading card games that puts naked cards in a box when they package it, and having no damage to those cards, I would say that if you care so much about the miniscule damage that the new packaging might cause, you might as well start handling your cards with special gloves.
As a test, I put 60 pokemon cards inside a paper deckbox that could fit 60 naked cards, and I shook the box with the cards inside very violently. All 60 cards weren't damaged, so I would assume that would be the case with the modern masters 2015 packaging.
You say that as if collectors don't use gloves when opening packs. They do. I am by no means a part of this group, hell I play more on mtgo than I do with real cards these days. But there are people that this does matter too and they should be considered too.
Look at the other side of the coin. If you run a knife through a foil pack, you will probably be guaranteed to damage the cards, while with this new packaging there is no guarantee. A better example is if the corner of the booster box was crushed. Cards in foil packs would be more damaged than if they were in these new cardboard packs. Both cases would have damaged cards, but at least the cardboard packaging gives it extra protection, so maybe one less card will get damaged.
Also if all MM2015 packs are packaged this way, the highest condition the card will be in is lower than perfectly mint, and let's say all cards are packaged this way in the future, then wouldn't the highest level of "mintness" be near mint?
These collectors better obtain the cards fresh off the printers then. I also think the collectors who care if their cards are gem mint or not are in the minority.
Fun to open, but damages the cards and is quite easily resealed after seeing a YouTube video showing how. Very disappointed that Wizards messed up so badly on that aspect of this release. After seeing the Japanese versions, really wish they would have stuck with that pack style.

I actually like the new packaging a lot. They are easy to open and I experienced zero significant card damage in my box and saw none in the three other boxes I saw opened last night.

Yea. I bough a few packs to see how easy the open/repack process was and yes, it's scary easy. By the third pack I was able to open and reseal with no signs of tampering. Just need am exacto knife, some clear elmers glue, and a steady hand. Do NOT buy loose packs from untrusted sources.
I handled many packs last night at FNM and they seem just fine. I did not see ANY damaged cards. In fact, the cardboard offers more rigidity than a standard plastic wrapper. The only "downside" I saw was they are not air tight sealed, so once the wrapping on the booster box is opened, all packs inside are exposed to air. I think this is great because it means more packs will be opened and used instead of stored for long term sale sealed, but hoarders can still hoard as long as they keep their booster boxes air tight in the wrapper.
Opening the pack and extracting the cards is quick, easy, and has significantly less chance of damaging cards than trying to rip them out of plastic wrappers.

I was talking about opening with the pull tab. If you're worried about individual pack tampering, it's no better or worse than regular packaging. From a consumer standpoint, pulling the tab is quick and easy and the cards slide out with no fuss.
.......Have you seen the Youtube video????????????
Heck I just bought two packs to see how easy it is to open these packs (not using the tabs), take out the cards, and then reseal and see if I could fool someone into opening it through the tab and think I had gotten a really messed up pack.
It took me 5 minutes to open, alter, and reseal a pack. And unless you can show me someone who can do that with the current plastic packaging and pass it off as un-tampered, there is absolutely no comparison between the cardboard packaging and the present plastic kind in terms of tampering.
If you're worried about individual pack tampering, it's no better or worse than regular packaging.
Speaking of, maybe it's just me, but after RTR, I found it harder to open individual booster packs without the ripping of the packaging (since I like collecting at least one wrapper from each set, I like having the pack opened with as little rip as possible, weird I know ), dunno if they actually altered anything or not though...
The pack boxes look nice, sit well, have a good feel, and open really nice without risking damaging the cards at all.
That said, the ease of tampering, the lack of protection against moisture, and the fact that the fit isn't snug enough leaving some cards to get damaged bottoms and sides right out of the box is enough to say they cannot continue this format without serious improvements.
I can attest to it being VERY easy to open and reseal these packs with NO signs. Saw someone do it at my release event to warn others about this (he was trying to spread the word so people don't get scammed)
Buyers beware. Do not buy ANY loose packs except from a reputable dealer or unless you witness the box being opened. Not worth the risk and you know some jerks are going to do this. Mods if you see this it might be good to sticky this info for everyone. Way to easy to do this with the new packaging so people need to beware!
Wow. I watched all 3 videos, guy pulls 70 foil rusted relics. Feel bad for the dude, but it was entertaining.
Can you imagine what will happen at GP: Vegas if this stuff happens? Imagine having to fix problem packs like this for some of the 7000+ people that will be opening packs.

Yeah imagine if a draft pod saw everyone opening foil rusted relics all over the place on top of the fact that it's turned around in the pack/you can just look across the table and see rusted relics galore. It's a fine limited card but with that in mind the draft is virtually ruined because it's not at all realistic.
Watched on rustic relic video from the guy and was just laughing so hard. Like, really? Good god what happened? So ridiculous. I'm just thinking "so you can bulk sell all these rusted relics for nickels/sell all the rusted relics you got for under $3...

What is up with the Wizards QC for this high value set? Seeing so many scratched or already slightly played right out of the pack and not to mention the color fading issues.
I can see the last day of printing, the guy in the final shift said screw it, all foil Rusted Relics.

If it is quick and easy to do this, AND do it without damaging the packaging, that's a problem, as it lets the unscrupulous tamper with cards.
Hell yes it's a problem!
I'm not sure if it was intentional,
but they've created a product that will be incredibly risky to buy online.
Sealed boxes are (probably!) safe,
but individual packs will be worse than packs from sets that have been mapped

Indeed, this set positively REEKS of laziness.
It's especially inexcusable considering how much easier and cheaper
it is for them to make a set like this than a brand new set.
I hope Wizards takes note of their huge and numerous errors,
but I fear their bottom line will not motivate them to make any changes
