You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
I hope these get recycled; any little change like this is a good one as long as it sticks around. I'll certainly be a little sad if they go back to not recycling them.
Realism is knowing that no one is going to upset an organized and functioning multi-million dollar production line without a damn good reason, and the "good of the environment" is enough of a reason, especially if the proposed change is more expensive. A few cents per unit easily add up to millions in large scale production.
Here's some realism too; these companies are made up of actual people who have their own actual people opinions on things. Maybe some of those actual people influence the decisions of WOTC?
Part of it probably does have to do with money, maybe they're getting more so they can afford the small loss or they found a way to do it while keeping it affordable. Either way, there could still be some altruistic merit buried deep in the reasons as to why they're doing this. To just assume that it's because they're greedy is just being cynical.
I've been to Tokyo. They don't recycle. They just burn everything in those uber ominous grey towers lol Although I am curious about the technology because those things don't emit any smoke.
Say what???
When did you go?
I went just over a month ago, and there were public bins *everywhere*-
And not just single bins like we have here- they had separate bins for paper, cans, bottles, and even bottle caps(?!).
We stayed at an airbnb in Akihabara,
and the host made us separate our recylables into the like eight different categories they have for them there.
Momir Vig, Simic Visionary
Melek, Izzet Paragon
Oona, Queen of the Fae
Bruna, Light of Alabaster

It's surprising to see everyone talk about recycling the packs after using them, which is overlooking what makes them "eco-friendly": Namely, they are made from 100% FSC-certified sources. This means that the paper they contain came from wood from forests which are sustainably managed, where over time the number of trees is kept stable. It's even better if you recycle them but even if not, the sourcing of the paper is already better for the environment than the old way.
Anyone who wants to learn more about how FSC certification for paper products works can read here: https://us.fsc.org/

I went two years ago. We rented a house actually and ya, there were two bins (with instructions as to what goes where) but it was more like "Recyclables" & "Trash". What I did notice, in a bit of a test of irony, is that although the Japanese are recycling savy, they literally package everything. And that includes dumb stuff like an apple. Why the hell does my apple need to come in a damn box???
i can't wait to open 20 dollar bills folded the wrong way in these.
comparison to the crap found in baseball card packs at the grocery store and kidding aside, i like this idea. it doesn't take any effort at all to put a bin next to the trash to throw these into for recycling. downside is that it puts it into the hands of the players to recycle their leavings, but at least the option is a little more obvious now.
This picture on mothership shows Mark Zug as the artist of cover art. Karn on the cover has original art(by Jason Chan), not a new piece.
So...
That's a good eye! A quick search for rare and mythic cards illustrated by Zug:
There are 37 cards fitting the criterias. Notable cards are Batterskull and Noble Hierarch.
Ha, I pointed that out on the day of the original packaging spoiler in Feb. In the MM2 spoiler thread I posted all of the rares and mythics and their reasons for appearing or not appearing. When it came down to it there was precedent that the packs would contain new art and Mark Zug may be supplying new art for a card. My money was still on Noble Hierarch and the image of Karn on the pack at PAX East solidified my bet. I don't think it will be Batterskull since that was last years GP promo.
As an environmental and LEED specialist, I'm extremely delighted to read this news (I've actually written to Wizards about this before). It's long overdue, but better late than never. That said, I don't think it needs to be a box, but they can play with better packaging later...this is at least a good start.
In it a pack is both opened and shaked before opening. Purely from the shaking sounds, there is a non-zero amount of objects inside that are loose. Hopefully this is not the cards themselves but an insert of some sort, but even still this could get caught and lodged underneath cards causing damage. Second we see a peak of something from inside. I'm not really talented at pausing videos to get a good look, and even if i were it seems very small. Any ideas? It doesn't look like a card to me.
Edit - actually, the other languages each have seperate videos. This... German? one has him pulling out the cards from the pack not facing us. This seems to imply there are no non-card inserts in the pack, and thus the cards are what are making the "loose" sound when shaken. Shame the first cards back can't be seen. I would love to know if it was a token/add or not. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmgSN-oSYVs
Gonna go through the rest and update as I go along.
Edit 2- at the ~ 0:20 mark in the Spanish video, she shakes the pack and we again hear how loose the cards are inside. And again around ~2:30. Hell at ~2:50 when she signs off with the pack in her hand it sounds bad. These packs need to be padded with foam or something or these cards will be banged to hell by the time shipping and handling is done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqywEE1EYIw
French and Italian videos didn't seem to have much of note. Other than these people really seem to love shaking these packs for some reason I do not understand. If they are trying to show off how loose and unsecured the cards are inside then they are succeeding.

It does seem weird that the German video shows no ad/token cards. If you look at this video right here https://instagram.com/p/1yyZP-lqPI/ you'll notice that there's a special insert (pro player cards make a comeback?). Given that WOTC wants to give us the appropriate tokens for each set, I think it's safe to assume we'll have them in MM15 as well.
I don't know guys, I don't think the fact that the cards are loose in the cardboard packaging will damage the cards, unless you really care about any kind of miniscule damage.
I bought tons of Pokemon TCG theme decks and they come naked (not shrinkwrapped) in a deckbox, which is inside a larger box. I opened over 40 of these things and none of the cards were damaged. It really depends on the distance between the card and cardboard packaging, although I shook a Pokemon TCG theme deck in its box, and it did make a sound, meaning it isn't tight in the box. Out of all the Pokemon TCG theme decks I bought, only one card was damaged. It was somehow stuck on the packaging, so if that happens to Modern Masters 2015, it would probably happen to a few out of many packs, and would only affect the front most card and/or the rear most card.
Let's just say that if you care so much about the damage that the packaging might cause, you better start wearing gloves while you sleeve those cards up. Only time will tell if this kind of packaging is the way of the future or not.

And it's not like this type of thing can't happen with the foil packs either. I've had cards that were caught in the seam when the pack was sealed and damaged that way (commons, fortunately).
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.
The good news is that if you get a damaged card, wizards will send you a replacement.
are you serious, how does that even work? Do I have to record myself cracking boosters and sending the footage to wotc?
You send the damaged card to them and they send you a replacement. You might need to send the whole pack though and they'll replace all of the cards. I think they even throw in some extra stuff to cover the shipping you pay to send the stuff to them.
Yeah, it's not like we're cracking Power 9 here, guys. Sure, having the cards loose in the package might cause some miniscule wear and prevent them from being certified gem mint, but it's definitely not enough that they'll ever go below Near Mint. Unless you're looking to get your pulls graded and framed, this won't affect anything.
This is a COLLECTIBLE card game. To assume a collector is opening cards with the intent of doing anything except framing his collection as Gem mint is irresponsible. No this isn't the end of the world. And won't affect most players. But to the people who do care this is an issue.

And here I thought the intent of opening gaming cards was to be able to play the game....
I'm assuming that's why Luck said "collector" and not "player".
MTG is a Collectible Card Game,
and there are definitely people who collect the cards,
but never play with them.

I would say I collected many cards from different trading card games and never used them, and from personal experience from a trading card games that puts naked cards in a box when they package it, and having no damage to those cards, I would say that if you care so much about the miniscule damage that the new packaging might cause, you might as well start handling your cards with special gloves.
As a test, I put 60 pokemon cards inside a paper deckbox that could fit 60 naked cards, and I shook the box with the cards inside very violently. All 60 cards weren't damaged, so I would assume that would be the case with the modern masters 2015 packaging.

Did you use a loupe to check for damage? Graders don't mess around.
This seems fine to me. It doesn't seem very likely that this is going to cause any damage to cards. It certainly won't push anything below NM unless you run the pack over before you open it.
