Modern Masters 2015 edition packaging apparently gives a big hugglez to earth / nature / ecosystem with 100% Forest Stewardship Council-certified paperboard. WotC indicates this is to be limited for English version only.
As a player, how important is this sort of environmental consideration ?

If even 1% of the playerbase recycles these things, I'll be shocked.
Edit: Actually, wait...depending on how rigid they are, they might sub in for toploaders when sending out online trades. I guess that's recycling in a way.
waste of time and money on their part. they're all still going in the garbage.
I suppose it depends on your city.
LA has an extensive recycling program,
and these new packs will go back into the recycling "pool"
as long as the owners take the 0.5 seconds to put the packs in the blue bin instead of the black bin.

Many cities (like San Francisco) have sort facilities so even if you throw it away it still gets recycled. Normal packaging isn't recyclable so good idea.
Fantastic idea. Sure I like the feel of regular packs quite a bit and look but recycling and helping out the most valuable resource known to man is great. As for whether it costs extra to package this way? Unsure. No the MSRP isn't 3 dollars higher because of the packaging in fact I don't care about the MSRP of modern master packs or FTV's. Especially considering that when I buy a normal booster box I'm paying way less than MSRP.

Why don't you just throw them in the recycling bin? Do american stores not have them?
It varies quite a bit by state.
California is all about recycling, so there are bins everywhere here.
I grew up in Alabama, and there really isn't a recycling program there.
Larger cities have bins and programs, but many smaller cities do not (yet?)
I'm surprised they're testing this on Americans instead of the Japanese,
as they have a very intricate recycling system that these would easily fit into.

assuming they made resealing the packs extremely difficult/impossible, i'm guessing the only people moaning about this will be:
a) people who don't like change
b) people who don't recycle.
if it's the latter, then boo! start recycling!

I think the cards inside are getting wrapped in a way or another, or the package is perfectly sized so that they don't move all around.
As for recycling, here in Italy there are strict laws about it, especially for shops and public places. For example, if you want, you may not recycle at all and put everything into the trash bin but, after a specific number of times (usually 3-4) in a year, you have to pay everytime they come to get your non-recycling trash. Instead, if you choose to recycle, everything is free. So, we are very incetivized to recycle and everyone does it.
Finally, I think Wizards is trying this with Modern Masters probably because these new booster packs are more expensive to them rather than the old ones, so, instead of increasing "a lot" the base price of a regular set booster pack, they absorbed that in the high MSRP of Modern Masters booster packs (I'm talking obviously by proportions).
I like it and I hope they use these for every booster product as long as they protect the cards as well as the regular ones. I can't imagine that this hasn't been a concern when developing this packaging.
People recycle where I live, so as long as my LGS sets out a bin for cardboard, which I think they will, these will get recycled. And as someone pointed out, if they do go in the regular garbage, at least these decompose. I also love the perforated strip, that should be more satisfying than doing that bag of chips thing.
Edit: No "the Gathering" below the Magic logo? Is that a first?

Why don't you just throw them in the recycling bin? Do american stores not have them?
Things can vary here, even down to the city level. Depending on where you are, a waste disposal company could have a city contract, and possibly not offer recycling pickup. Standalone recycling centers are few and far between where I live anyway. They're also generally run by a local government, so that means they're open like, one hour a day. The only one I know of near me is run by the county. No idea where you are, but in the States "government" is usually a synonym for "useless".
Its not about recycling, so it can only be about 2 things:
a) they wanted to freshen the look of the product
b) they found a way to do it cheaper.
Cynicism is a lazy replacement for realism.
Wizards knows the average age of their player base (Millenials care more about the environment than previous generations) and they know that they're a high profile creator of plastic trash. This is a pre-emptive effort to improve their corporate image. Slightly more expensive packaging is irrelevant if they get a promotional boost from this.

I've been to Tokyo. They don't recycle. They just burn everything in those uber ominous grey towers lol Although I am curious about the technology because those things don't emit any smoke.
Honestly, this should have happened years ago. Every company, regardless of their size, should do their part. If they did, we'd all be in a much better place today.
I love this idea as a naturalist and a forestry student. The fact that these are recognized by the forest stewardship council is a great thing. While this might not attract any new players (let's face it, people addicted to cardboard crack would still buy even if it were responsible for destroying the rainforest) this helps put players like me at ease with the fact that maybe Wizards does care. People as a whole don't care enough IMO

Its kinda weird in the US. Lots of small business dont recycle because there is no where to deposit it. *Usually just a general trash bin for what ever complex they are in* Alot of cities have residential recycling programs though.

SonofaBith - Wizards was so excited about making the packaging for Modern Masters 2 recyclable, they decided to make most of the rares and all but 1 of the UC's recycle-bin ready too. Convenient!

If the recycling is effective then that is good. No need for more multi-thousand year lifespan trash in the world.
