I get that some people like carnival games, I just don't get why you'd have them at a Magic event.
It's like if you went to a soccer match, and then in the halftime break, there was a karaoke competition. I like soccer and *love* karaoke, so I'd be in my element, but most people there would be thinking 'what is this stupid distraction AND WILL THAT SIRGOG IDIOT EVER SHUT UP???'
You kind of answered your own question, some people like it, so that's why hey have it. Going to a prerelease is nothing like going to spectator a sport. But if we must use your analogy, it's like going to the soccer match and having the singing competition going on in one of the side rooms. It's not like they must have it on in the middle of the pitch, it's just something you can wander over and do if you feel like it, and if you don't, just ignore it, it doesn't hurt you.

Well to be more precise, it'd be like going to an archery tournament, where they award a custom-fletched bow to the participant with the best singing voice, but in previous years that prize would have gone to a tournament competitor.
I generally don't like unique Magic promos that are only available if you do certain non-Magic related things. Unique Magic promos for door prizes at a sanctioned event, or for playing 20 casual games at your local store are fine with me. But for being good at manual dexterity tricks - well, Falling Star being banned sets a precedent that manual dexterity and Magic don't really go together.
I'd be 100% fine with this gimmick if the prizes weren't unique - for instance if it was 'Good score = 1 DTK booster, amazing score = 2 boosters'.

As someone whose father is the chairman of the New Zealand South Island Bowhunter's Championship, and who has subsequently been dragged along to plenty of events, I can tell you I've seen your hypothetical happen several times. (But with stag roaring, rather than singing) Part of the fun of an bowhunter's competition is that it's not always actually about archery. (Also, fletching is used to talk about arrow feathers, at least in NZ. I'm not sure what you mean by a custom fletched bow, and assume you mean one made from scratch instead.)
Oh, that was me showing off how much (nothing) I know about archery.
The point stands though - 'special' Magic prizes should be for Magic events.
I really miss the quite competitive prereleases we used to have 10+ years ago, as Limited events that had both high prizes and high variance in who won them. After six weeks of the cards being familiar, the advantage that the top 10% of players have over the rest of the field grows - when the format is new, middle of the pack players often do quite well. There was something great about seeing players that had never been in a tournament before come top 8 and win a dozen packs in a 200 player event - that same player that would not have a chance once the format is well understood.
So my store has 4 events on Saturday and 3 on Sunday. They have 100+ people PER EVENT. We're a huge store. Regularly 150+ playing standard during FNM (which also has 20 players for sealed and 20 players for modern).
Apparently Wizards sent them enough "full sets" for.. 20 people.. FOR THE ENTIRE WEEKEND.
My store changed the rules so you only got one card...
By the time I got to it at the 3rd event on Saturday.. all that was left was Evolving Wilds and Dragon Fodder.
I scored 10 and 20, with the second throw stopping in the x2 zone.
Then I kept experimenting with different styles of throwing. I even managed to score 0 and not topple a single token.
In the end, the dice look gorgeous in reality. The Kolaghan is less magenta and more pink, but it looks not bad at all.
All in all, not a bad distraction, but I would prefer activities such as Ugin's Fate in the future than this.
I think that they're getting better. The Helvault and Ugin's Fate activities were good, with everyone trying to unlock the prizes. Personally, I think that they should've been a little harder - Ugin was saved at our store before my first match was even done. Maybe a little more tension.
As far as the prizes, the Helvault was bad feels when some stores lucked into solid gold. Ugin's Fate distributed it a bit better, but we still had people winning golden tickets and most people getting junk. I honestly prefer this level of promos - a rare that's sort of desirable, and some reasonably playable commons/uncommons. Nothing that's going to hit $200, or even $20.
The activity was pretty cool. We took turns crowding around the board, cheering when someone hit 18, and cheering even louder when they didn't, to make them feel better. It was kind of a bonding activity.

Well group activities involving releasing a kraken and what not depends on the size of the turnout. Some may find it extremely easy, but spare a thought for LGS who barely get 8 people in their prerelease.
Still not a fan of gimmicks, especially poor ones.

I've been to the smaller prereleases, and while I do sympathize, my friend who went to FRF and had a 16-person prerelease said that they each got two packs of Ugin's Fate, so my sympathies are limited
That said, it's extremely easy to scale things like this - instead of looking for a set number of achievements, make it a certain number of achievements per player (say, three). The goal automatically scales with attendance, and it makes it more likely that everyone gets to participate.
I appreciate that they're trying, and I think (I hope!!!) that they're learning from each iteration.

My store didn't run it, but I played it during round 1 since I had a bye. I did it maybe 25 times. My highest score was 18. I only landed in the middle once.
I looked at the board, then magically all the pieces fell down on their own, and I asked my LGS to give me a playset of evolving wilds.
What store actually cares about this stuff? Normally they just give out the promo things to the winners of the evening, if there are more promos than winners then it's usually first come first serve?
It only ever matters for the TOP TOP TOP prize stuff, and that usually goes to the winner of the pre-release night.
Side note, I'm quite tired of "Seeded" packs. I got the B/R one, and ended up having to play Blue/White. Wat?

I think that the point of these may be that people who don't win at playing Magic might be able to win at something Magic-related, and get a prize. I would boycott a store that gave out stuff like this as part of the prize pool.

I didn't try the game cause noone did it during the Prerelease where I attended it, but I noticed the shop owner didn't have any Sunscorch Regents and the advertisement inside the Seeded Packs didn't mention it, and neither did the article about DTK's promos as I've just noticed after a quick google search. Was it pulled out from the promos? We had already seen an alternate image of it and I really wanted that one!
Yeah, the fate of that pic is currently unknown. It was mistakenly published and then errata'd that only the Foe-Razer is available as promo. Too bad, I liked it far more than the regular art. We will see if it surfaces somewhere.

I also am not a fan of the seeded boosters. I remember playing in the RTR pre-release and getting the rakdos pack. I won the pre-release with a bant deck...

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it put an evasive creature in its deck over a narrow hate card.

If a card isn't worth your opponent removing, it's not worth putting in your deck.
My store distributed their promos poorly and ran out entirely on the Midnight pre-release. In fact it seemed as if my store oversold the midnight pre-release because they had to cancel the ones they were originally doing on Sunday.
It was quite popular, due to being a new thing; likely not a repeatable gimmick, though. Most people got 12+, and about 1/4 got 18 or better. Lowest (non-practice) score rolled was a 2 that got doubled to 4.
Wizards print good rares, players complain about cash grab. They print underwhelming rares, players complain that the cards suck. They spoil the best cards first, players complain about the insane prices of preorders. They spoil the meh cards first, players complain that this is the worst set ever.
So. I think I understand now.
As far as these forums are concerned, WotC can never do anything good because:
Card that is new and probably good = "pushed"
Card that is new and probably bad = "EDH/casual fodder"
Card that is a reprint = "lazy"
Card that is a better version of an older card = "power creep"
Card that is a weaker version of an older card = "worthless"
