Where's the people who said fetches were dead set in DtK?
Where's Taigam?!!?!
Actually, Doug Beyer informed us yesterday or on Wednesday that there is no Taigam legendary card.
And I really want to hear MaRo explain why they broke their rule "Ten duals in a block".
It's simple. Fetches aren't duals, and as is, there are a good number of mana bases that aren't running 4 copies of the relevant fetch. I am actually rather surprised at all the people who expected them to print the full cycle. Fetches are low hanging fruit for them to sell packs down the line, blowing their fetch wad in one block was never likely. Once they announced BFZ was the first time I was convinced that we would see them this year as Aaron Forsythe alluded to. I kinda hope they don't print them though, just so I can hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth that would accompany a Zendikar w/o fetches. Would be pretty simple to explain too- the Eldrazi have so sapped the magic of the land that fetches and man lands just aren't feasible there... I mean the roil was what was storymechanic responsible for the fetches, and the roil was caused by the fight between the Eldrazi and their prison, so now that they are out, fetches don't even make sense right? No, they didn't make any more sense on Tarkir either, but getting the ally color versions into modern did.

But as with the Elder Dragons, one word is the answer. Marketing. Nothing more. We have to deal with that in the future.
I can't find MaRo's original statement, but the catch to his phrase is probably: Fetchlands aren't duals! That is exactly what I mean by saying he twists his word as much as possible so that they are barely true and extremely misleading.
Really, guys? Really? Because it is quite the contrary...
I thought the idea was to put out a new version of each clan's Khan from KTK, not print a mono-colored legendary in each color. In 4 of 5 colors, these happen to be the same things. Narset happened to go Blue-White. Still understand the disappointment, but mono blue has its share of interesting cards with this set.
Profaner of the Dead looks interesting. Unless things like Pacifism and Encase in Ice are very common, sacrificing your big creatures to evacuate your opponent's side of the board won't be worth it very often. Prolly worth exploring in small numbers though, against some decks the tempo loss will be insurmountable.
I feel like this hits the sideboard at the very least to go against GW Manifest Clears the board without triggering Whisperwood. And it can destroy opponents token decks

Seeing how he said several times (after the article that mentioned said rule) that they won't always print full cycles of 10 duals, I'm not sure why he would need to explain anything.
Show me the several times he said it, please. Citations welcome. Thanks.
Taigam has about as much right to a card as Ankleshanker.
Hindsight is always 20/20, well?
I honestly expected them to have him represented, just to wrap up the cycle of monocolored legends. But they went the flavor way and because Narset became a walker, her place was left vacant.
Taigam was a prominent Sultai member in the original timeline, and practically the highest ranking Ojutai human now. One whose fate significantly differed.
But yeah, Ankleshanker....

I wonder how you can twist this statement. Surprise me.
Pretty the only way is that HE considers them duals, but generally they are considered not (for the purpose that is crucial here).
Didn't know he felt this way, but I have to disagree heartily with him on this. In formats with duals that have basic land types, they can act as such, however they themselves are not actually dual lands.
Regardless, they were the allied color fixing lands to contrast with the enemy fixing pain lands. Not a true cycle of 10, but it was an equal spread of color pair fixers among 2 color fixing lands (have to exclude the tri lands here).
i think its pretty stupid that both taigam and the new ankleshanker are both mentioned in this article. and both get no cards? i just dont get it. i really expected both of them to have cards... especialy taigam.
im normaly never someone who rages at sets before release, but this set is pretty much the worst of the whole block value wise. and definitl worse than theros too.
all the dragons are so high cmc.. that its impossible for all of them to find a place. some will, maybe... and then most definitly not as playsets. so no value in the dragons...
the only 2 value cards are the two planeswalkers.. and SOME rares.. but not many.
just look at mcm. dragons is a big set and it has less mythics above 10€ in pre-order than fate reforged... fate reforged at least at ugin, monastery mentor and soulfire grandmaster.
dragons only have sarkhan and narset.
i really wanted to buy a display like i did with theros, khans and fate reforged. but i really hate the design of this set.
both planeswalkers are have the color blue... which is stupid in my oppinion. to put 2 walkers in a set who share one color. so im not interested in any of them.
the elder dragons are all maybe playable to some degree, but non of them is on the powerlevel as stormbreath dragon or thundermaw hellkite.
i just dont get it, why not? this is the biggest dragon set of all time and we dont have a single pushed dragon... there is not a single dragon pre-ordering above 10€ in the biggest dragon set ever. thats kind of hillarious.
i think its nearly impossible to break even in this set with a booster box, even if you sell everything directly after launch.
this set really really misses the rare-lands, to give it some value.
and its not even fun flavour wise... there just the 1/1 and 2/2 humans and then there are all those 6cmc dragons. nothing between. and nearly not a single dragon is interesting.
this set is in my oppinion a real fail... magic origins and zendikar can only get better.
Profaner of the Dead's artwork to me looks like it shows a figure shrouded in black, holding up a severed human head. Kinda chilling, considering recent world events over the past year.
And don't forget to Coat with Venom, because putting poison on your stuff makes you able to withstand more injuries!
Overall a decent set. It's hard to make Dragons cool with all the good designs already used, they don't have much to do but creep the power level and rehash old ideas. But they've managed to make it smell fresh enough that it'll sell moderately well I think.
"When Sarkhan saved Ugin in Tarkir's past, it changed Tarkir's future. The Sultai no longer exist, having been supplanted by the dragonlord Silumgar and his clan."
and a thing what pisses me off too is those stupid cycles.
i mean this 3/3 6cmc uncommon dragons with megamorph cycle is the worst cycle ever and they waste 5 uncommons on that.
and than the even bigger joke this cycle of manastones. how lazy can anyone be? to design a single card and give it all mana combinations and call it a cycle?
keyrunes and so on at least at different effects to make them more interesting.. but this? its just ridiculous lazy design.
When Stormbreath Dragon is better than most of the dragons in a set made specifically for dragons, you know something went very wrong.

This is one of the things that really bother me. Quite a number of very lackluster flavor text. A trend that progresses from M15 onward. The user Renasce made a big deal from (IMO rather good) Feral Krushok flavortext when FRF was spoiled, but especially this one really bothers me. It is like they fired the good and imaginative flavortext writers.

I dont even want to get a box now, Ill just buy my Foil Dromaka I need for EDH and buy what singles I need here and there. Coreset and Zendikar had better step up. MM looks good but the cost will be harsh.

I think that some cards are meant to have inspiring and imaginative flavortext, while others are just there to tell the story since there are no novels anymore. Sure, they could do both, but that takes time and effort. They have to spend that time and effort coming up with names for all the functional reprints.
They should have called this set "+1/+1 counters of Tarkir".
Seriously. Someone at R&D has a massive fetish for Outlast and Bolster. It seems like half the cards in the set deal with +1/+1 counters.
I guess I do have to say this set was a disappointment for me. So many missed opportunities. As a dragon collector and fan, it should have been a lot more exciting to me. It did give quite a few nice support cards and inspired me to finally make a Scion of the Ur-Dragon EDH, but it seems like I'm mostly going to be wasting a lot of money on foil copies of absolutely terrible, boring dragons and two Planeswalkers that'll be severely overpriced because no one will want to open boxes of this set.
I'm furious that they didn't give blue a legend. Sure, Narset's a planeswalker and that's cool, but that new open blue slot belonged to Tasigur. They set him up with cards mentioning him and making him a villain in the storyline only to not print him? What the eff, wizards.
You meant Taigam. Tasigur, the Golden Necklace is currently a Legendary Artifact on Silumgar's neck.
I sigh every time I see Student of Ojutai, that art was what I thought would have gone on the "Master Taigam" card.
It would have been pretty cool if they brought back Tasigur as some kind of legendary artifact with a powerful scry/delve/stuff your graveyard ability.
It would also be pretty cool if he somehow escaped or killed Silumgar in the end. Not because I like Tasigur or have any sympathy for his character, just that it would be pretty epic.
Not sure if it's already been mentioned on an earlier page, but like KTK's Rotting Mastodon, DTK has a Fate Reforged card that appears to be the risen remains of an FRF card: in this case, Defiant Ogre and Marsh Hulk. Or so I assume, going off of the flavortext. He seems to have acquired a new weapon in the intervening millennium.
There a bunch of fun "build a casual deck around me" enchantments in this set, which makes me happy. So many janky kitchen table decks to cobble together, so little time. At least they'll probably be cheap to build...

Oh wait, we have color fixing in block for all 10 dual color combinations...
