Smother is an instant that doesn't die to enchantment removal. This is basically a strictly worse Journey to Nowhere.
I don't think journey is coming back, given the strictly worse version we got last set too. The smother effect is still fine. Consider that being a permanent can be a benefit as well as a drawback. Sometimes devotion and enchantments matters.

Journey might not have been considered safe in this format due to Manifest. Neither this nor Suspension Field can hit your own Manifested Ugin.
I think they should have just given it a go. Ugin, Big Garruk and Hornet Queen are beatings early, but they aren't *ridiculous* like an early Emrakul or Iona.

They could have made it target colorless creatures if they wanted it to not hit manifests and morphs. Instead they keep putting incredibly restrictive conditions on it.
This would have been so much more interesting if it had targeted a non-land permanent with a converted mana cost of three or less. As it is, it's a strictly worse Journey To Nowhere.

What exactly do you mean? This can hit any morph or manifest just fine...
Based on Sam Stoddard's article on wraths and removal, plus comments Maro has made about the colour pie, I don't think Journey to Nowhere will happen any time soon. I think the enchanment-based nature of white removal is considered by the current incarnation of R+D to be a weakness of the colour, not the individual spell. If black gets destroy at any given cost, white will get the same thing, except in an enchantment-based temporary exile form. So as far as R+D is concerned, this is white Smother. I'm not saying I like any of this, but it's why I think we keep getting these bad Journey variants.
Suspension field is like having Reprisal Yay I can kill big things late in the game when I'm already half dead, that's not what control wants to do, control needs protection early then it strangles the life out of the game late with big plays.

I just hope they don't make this a promo for FNM. WOTC sure likes exilers as promos (Banishing Light, Banisher Priest, Brain Maggot, Suspension Field) meh

You've never been blown out by a simic charm in response to your Journey, have you? But otherwise it is. Just like how Cancel is strictly worse than dissolve.
much better than suspension field. Control decks wanted a quick solution for troublesome small creatures (chained to the rocks doesn't count), and we have one now.
The fact this can hit Goblin Rabblemaster is really something. Devouring Light was unrealiable. Reality shift was good, yes, but leaves a 2/2 body behind. Anyways, good news for those who wants to go U/W or mono W control.

Doesn't Last Breath fill the same role, at instant speed, without the risk of it being blown up later?

Not really, there are a ton of cards at cmc <4 with power >2 right now that need to be dealt with. This is especially good against junk aggro as it hits Fleecemane Lion, Anafenza the Foremost, and Rakshasha Deathdealer(which could dodge last breath with a pump) giving you some breathing room early. Point is, Smother into Nowhere is super playable and much better than Suspension Field because of the dearth of playable 2 mana removal spells that deal with early aggressive plays. This set is filling that hole in nicely with Silkwrap, Ultimate Price, and Roast as well as potentially the color hoser removal cycle out of sideboards.

Pourquoi?
For me, it looks like a weird, half-shaven Ojutai ainok.
Let this great clan rest in peace (2001-2011)
