Oh my. I was beginning to think that twin would see some sort of ban this month given its constant high performance in modern events and high meta share. This card however would suggest otherwise. If you're expecting a lot of twin this card is great. Sure it doesn't kill rhino but if you're bringing combust in to deal with 4 cards in 60 from junk you're doing something wrongly. That you can let them go EoT tap your land so you only have 1 source open on t3 and then get a potential 2 for 1 if they slam twin is big game. Also has strong crossover hate against UWx if that ever comes back in a big way. 1 mana answer to colonnade that can't be stopped and doesn't give them replacement land while in a pinch also killing any resto, clique and snapcaster can't be ignored.
yea it seems like a pretty natural sideboard card to me in standard for the reasons you just mentioned. probably a two-of at most though.
it also kills Seeker, Mentor, and Wingmate for really cheap. probably shreds U/W heroic too. im into all those things.
i feel like it might have a tough time displacing glare of heresy though, which is where i feel it might fit into most jeskai and mardu sideboards (what i have experience playing mostly). on the other hand, it also might be a cool substitute for wild slash or strike. happy to see it in this set, fosho.
Well, they did print Hushwing Gryff little before they banned pod, so i wouldn't hold my breath for twin dodging the ban hammer for long. If targeted hate cards doesn't work they'll probably ban it.
Wizards is definitely trying to put some pressure on Splinter Twin here. This card is stronger against twin than hushwing gryff was against pod. I do think this will have some effect on the meta.
1 mana makes this a huge deal over Combust, as Combust was really the Twin/Colonnade slayer. UWx Colo decks aren't really seeing play, but Twin is the #1 deck in Modern, so I imagine decks that have trouble with twin will much rather have this answer. It also conveniently kills a lot of the GWx Little Kid and GW aggro guys (Smiter, Wilt Leaf, etc.), as well as stirring wildwood. I could see this as a 1 or 2 of in non RBx SB's (as RBx decks all ready have a slew of efficient removal that isn't near as narrow).
This is a very good sideboard card. I'm just curious as to how this and roast got in the same set. Usually we don't get two pushed standard playable kills spells. (In the same colour I mean)
My thinking is that they feel there needs to be answers to dragons. Roast is more of a limited-constructed card. While Rending Volley is strictly SB. Huge differences here.
We used to have Lightning Bolt and Combust together; they're meant for distinct situations.

I meant that if a person running deck with red already had Combust in sideboard, they will probably upgrade to this card as it is in most cases a better answer to blue or white creatures than Combust. However, if someone did not feel the need for such effect since now they won't use it. So I do not understand that modern hype.
We already have that effect, even better, though for one mana more. This is a very narrow card but a superstar in given scenarios so it is up to a player if they decide to bring more hate against certain matchup. I don't know why people here are acting like we never had Combust and this new card is *the end* of Twin. People already played Combust and they will upgrade to this card but it doesn't mean that Twin is over.
Well... If twin is your weakest match-up then you can theoretically play 8 copies of hate in you sideboard now.
It, and all of its future Twins.
That's what running Boros Reckoner in your deck is for

EDH: UBRJeleva | GURSurrak
Well, you forgot Wingmate Roc and the Prowess Brothers. This card can be relevant on sideboards against Jeskai or Abzan variants.
Older Magic as a Board Game: Panglacial Wurm , Mill
Blue targets: Exarch, Pestermite, Mistbind Clique, Fish
White: Wall of Omens/Ojutai's Orator, Brimaz, Lightning Angel/Mantis Rider, Restoration Angel, Geist token, Linvala
... Probably more.
If anything, it's pretty hard to do without Red in Modern with this printing.
