Mirror Mockery makes populate synergy somewhat interesting.
Seems casual. I like it. Let's see, Mirror Mockery on Voice of Resurgence, followed by an instant speed populate (Rootborn Defenses) to save the Voice. Add in a sacrifice effect to get some extra value out of your VoR token before it leaves play at end of combat?
The problem with this example is that Voice of Resurgence does not generate a token when it is exiled... only when it hits the graveyard.
As for the Mirror spell, what about shenanigans with Wormfang Manta?
I'm not sure, but it seems like a good combo as it absorbs your next turn (whenever in the future), but gives you one straight after this one instead.
I'm pretty sure you just skip the extra turn. To abuse it you'd need something to become Wormfang Manta while it's already in play, and THEN leave play...

With Torpor Orb it's a three card combo. Both the Orb and the Mirror are playable, and the Manta would be just the win sauce.
Dragon Whisperer. Pretty cool red mythic.
Mirror Mockery. Very good enchantment.
The hate cycle. Honestly I am slightly bummed out that it does not include the red hate card, what makes it so special it gets be in a different article later in the week? Is it a reprint like a Combust?
I think Mirror Mockery might be a huge design mistake... I think it's way too good.
Hate cards back is probably a sign to prevent a slip up or shows a mistake or 2 back in previous standard. To me, I think Wizards have acknowledge (by print) some of the past failures. Now a card like Self-Inflicted Wound makes Dragonlord Dromoka a joke.
Disagree with you on a few points. I'm not sure how modern playable encase in ice is, maybe an extremely fringe card against red aggro, and green decks usually have abrupt decay. Self-Inflicted Wound is also meh, because Gx decks usually have mana dorks, especially in standard where they nerfed ramp spells into the ground. White decks also tend to have a lot of tokens. But I enjoy the white hate card and the green one.
That green card is so much value at uncommon..... I am mainly talking EDH here, but I want to test it in all my green based decks since I believe it will almost always have relevance. Great standard sb card as others have already stated.
Dragon Whisperer just got put up at SCG for 4 each. I scrambled like hell to get em for 4 before they sold out. Website was having problems with the security certificate for Paypal. I had to set payment type to "call in payment" because my wife took my card. -.-
Oh well, better than the 35 dollar for 4 that's happening on eBay right now...

Did the same thing, felt like it was criminally under priced compared to all the other mythics.
Why is the art in this set so bad? Ktk and Frf both had decent art. It seems strange that the last set art is so much worse.
Dragons are a clue. The dragon art wasn't really a highlight of Reforged, and here of course it's everywhere. Also, there are a lot of those strange dog people, and they just look oddly proportioned as part of their art style. I wouldn't say most of the rest of the art is bad, but Khans had some of the best art Magic has had for years (Fate not so much).
That mythic makes me cry big salty why-isn't-this-a-dragon tears. It could have been rackdos pit dragon's turbo charged brother. Card is still good, but man the dragon deck needs some low drops...
im really hoping there a couple more low cost dragons, im planning on running a gr dragon stompy and the dragonlord servant and the gg 2/3 that gets a +1/+1 counter are nice but other than lightning regent the dragons cost a little too much. im not a fan of dragon whipserer much like im not a fan of the kargan dragonlord but to be far i just didnt care for levers and i also dont care too much rakdos pit dragon but the fact that i would have counted as a dragon and all the reveal or control a dragon cards it would have been nice bc it would come out early enough that you wouldnt have to reaveal as many
What happens? The same as happened last season with UW control and mono black. Play as much cheap removal as possible with only the most efficient and resilient creatures in the format.
To me it really is starting to feel like RTR block.
I wouldnt get too attached to it. standard is going to switch to a 4 set standard when origins is released so by the time people figure out the next best deck we will lose theros and 15 and there will be no red sligh, whip, devotion, hornet queen/courser/cataryd decks. there will be a lot of removal but every set from here out will have too keep the meta in check where there will only be 4 sets legal at a given time.

Whoops my bad, I attempted to give her some playability. Double red mana cost, expensive firebreathing, and pay to activate flying, plus win-more Formidable make this card meh. Maybe could see some play in Mono-red devotion.
It's a card for mono-red (forget devotion, just the usual sligh), and perfectly playable in Standard. Firedrinker Satyr was used despite inefficient firebreathing, dying to everything, and having a drawback, and mono-red doesn't have too many 2-drops. It's a deck that happily pays for Hammerhand for the temporary unblockability, so flying on a creature that hits this early is very relevant in mono-red. F
irebreathing, as it is for everything from Dragon Mantle to Satyr, is just a mana sink for when you run out of cards - and that's actually something red decks want since they burn through cards quickly.
Sure, the formidable ability is essentially useless, but that's true of Shaman of Forgotten Ways as well - and this will probably trigger more often and more usefully.
im really hoping there a couple more low cost dragons, im planning on running a gr dragon stompy and the dragonlord servant and the gg 2/3 that gets a +1/+1 counter are nice but other than lightning regent the dragons cost a little too much.
There may be more at Thunderbreak's 4 mana, but that's the limit. Wizards mentioned in an article today that they very deliberately didn't want Dragon Egg/Hatchling-level cards in the set, but wanted the dragons to be big with a price to match.
What happens? The same as happened last season with UW control and mono black. Play as much cheap removal as possible with only the most efficient and resilient creatures in the format.
To me it really is starting to feel like RTR block.
Unless they reprint Pack Rat (knock on wood), monoblack devotion won't be a thing again with DTK. Get ready for UW control decks flooding the meta once again, though. No, they don't have access to arguably the best sweeper ever printed anymore, but there's a lot more instant speed removal in blue and white, and the card draw options are about on par with Sphinx's Revelation (although there's no single silver bullet card like that one in the meta right now).
You meant "6 set Standard". And Theros doesn't rotate until Battle for Zendikar in October.

The colors of the cards you listed suggest Mardu control, which would be an interesting (and likely viable) twist on things.
Also, Dragon Whisperer does not seem like a mythic to me. A 2/2 for two with some good to mediocre activated abilities. Solid card. But not a mythic. In some sets I could almost see it at uncommon (though with NWO it's probably "too complex"), but probably rare. The only reason I can see for it being mythic is making cheap red decks expensive on purpose.
If burn becomes a huge player in modern with the new command I could certainly see an argument for swapping out a celestial purge for a surge of righteousness in my board. At worst you're still killing 1 of their dudes and with upside of 2 life gained. Of course with twin and GBX around purge is currently a far better option.
So they've spent 4 mana to gain 3 and bring you down by 3 then it sits there until they deal with Mockery. Seems good enough for me.
Well, sure, but can't they just fire a Restoration Angel afterwards to counter your Aura and gain value? Or do Abzan decks not play that card? Mostly thinking about Modern right now. (And it's not something I'm an expert at, at all, so please enlighten me if you know what's up)
I guess but that means they lost another turn by doing nothing other than casting Restoration Angel. Unless they wait on your turn to play it EoT which leaves it open to a counterspell unless you're tapped out.
Why is the art in this set so bad? Ktk and Frf both had decent art. It seems strange that the last set art is so much worse.
I respectfully disagree as much as possible. The art of this set blows the last three blocks out of the water IMHO (Khans, Theros, and RTR).
If you look at the cards spoiled and compare them to Khans, you will see there is much more cheap digital art, with most cards being too bright. There is almost no detail in any of them. There are some good pieces of course, but overall this sets art quality is really low. Theros on the other hand was way better. It actually had way better art than the blocks preceding it. It is better then RtR, but RTR was kind of a low point. See, Aerial Predation, Unflinching Courage.

Deathmist Raptor is a great art piece - it's the sort of somewhat comic art that could have been in a set like Ice Age (purely because that had a dinosaur in it).
I love Mirror Mockery. It's pretty much a perfect card, and by that I don't mean it's amazing and OP, what I mean is that it's balanced, interesting, and encourages careful thought while using it.
Since the spoiler of the UUU elemental I've wanted to try to revamp Mono U, but this seals the deal.

Exactly. You play it on your opponent's creatures.
It is there to abuse any ETB triggers.
Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage only makes a 3/3 without flying but at least you don't need a board to use it and that is why this doesn't pass the test.
Why in the heck do I want to make a creature if I already have creatures?
Perhaps it allows mono red decks to go bigger later. It might just be what Prophetic Flamespeaker couldn't be.
