Playable or not, I like the design of this card. An early(ish) wall that can Bathe another creature at instant speed. And in the late game, it can actually beat back.
Could work in a Jund or Temur mid-range shell. Maybe even GR devotion. Functions as solid, recurrable piece of removal, which also develops your board and clogs up the ground. Seems like very solid tech against Mono-Red, since it's immune to red removal spells, and blocks most aggro creatures without fear. I don't think the formidable clause will come up too often, but it's a nice bit of gravy.
Jeskai control maybe? Walls in red are just so awkward, idk.
That was my thought as well, even if this is the only reason to run red. A wall which can also be turned into spot removal when needed is pretty damn good. And UW always needs mroe removal available.
Interesting way to get around circular references.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
That's a weird ability. This is a weird card. Formidable is a weird mechanic.
I guess one thing in its favor is that it keeps Formidable active even if all of the other creatures that combined to let its ability activate were killed, so any future Formidable effects played that turn will still go off. And also the fact that a 3-drop can be an 8-power threat, though still sans trample.
This is still a really weird card.

I think it would have been fringe playable if u didn't have to activate it to get 8 power. So at least having multiples won't make you cry. This card is pretty awful tho...

To the people that say that a card needs to be a higher rarity because of Limited... I hate you guys so much. I present to you with this.
Perfect for Mardu control actually. Thought it does have some stiff competition in the 3cmc slot at the moment. I'll be testing it out in my current build. Very excited about this card. It's a welcome addition for non-blue control players like me!
This is nothing more then a junk rare that you wouldn't even put in your binder. I'm guessing WOTC has shown all the good rares and are now just giving us trash.

One card doesn't herald the end of a set's playability, you know. I mean, Boros Reckoner was the last card spoiled for Gatecrash. Obviously it was a trash rare because they saved it for last, right? Not to mention that we have 2 more mythic rares to see, Surrak is still out there somewhere, and this card itself isn't the worst thing possible. It can fit a role in a more controlly Temur deck that can either stay back as a wall and later get huge or just get sacrificed right away to kill something small. I'm not saying it's good, but it's not heralding that DTK is a trash set, especially since we have quite a few more cards to see still.
For one thing, I did not say that "DTK is a trash set" I was saying that a we have most likely have seen most of the good cards in the set be now. I'm hoping Surrak is good. I'm also hoping that the card that Evan Erwin has to spoil is good (He sure is hyped about it) https://twitter.com/misterorange/status/572558573487710208

We've likely seen the majority of the big, splashy rares, but that's not the same as seeing all of the good cards. We don't know what the land cycle looks like yet, and there are bound to be good commons/uncommons still.
I have neither the skill to correctly and accurately analyze this set in the context of current and future formats after 12 hours of exposure, nor the hubris to delude myself into believing that I do.
So Early-Mid game it acts as a wall that in a pinch can also act as spot removal. In the Mid-Late game it could also act as a large beater that can also trade with X/12 creatures.
I love this card. Now this is a card I want to brew around for a PDH deck (1 Rare, 99 commons)
If you have 8 power, then you get 8 more power. That seems win-more.
I would say it hardly is. 8 Power is two Rattleclaws and a Stormbreath, which while a good board position is hardly one which isn't necessarily a win at all. A couple Coursers, Mystics, and anything else is also hardly win-more. There is plenty where this isn't a win-more situation at all. 8 Power isn't that much at all if it's spread out over several creatures.
Strange to have such a big butt in red. Control applications maybe? Blocks rhino all day and acts as spot removal.

On phasing:
Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.

Maybe but in say a token deck you may have 8 power but you can't really attack with it
