Kekule_the_Magician on the inclusion of Devouring Light in a TurboFog Deck:

As a person who typically plays very creature oriented decks, I HATE when an opponent has Devouring Light. It is infuriating to finally get through with a creature on to have it exiled.
I've come to hate White in general now because it gets everything to the point where it is almost unfair. White has boardwipes (Wrath of God, End Hostilities), targeted exile and removal (Devouring Light, Banishing Light, Last Breath), lifegain spells, lifelink, low cost/high power enchantments and auras, flying creatures; my goodness what don't they get!?
Beastmaster was probably performing well in Constructed in the FFL but just hasn't worked in the real world metagame.
Like that 5 mana soulbond +4/+4 guy in Avacyn Restored - R&D thought it was the best creature in Standard, but it was barely played even prior to Thragtusk being printed.

Alternatively, maybe there's something coming up in the near-future that they believe will cause the card to see some Constructed play?

If the presence of Caryatid, Courser, Tasigur, and Siege Rhino all in the same deck isn't enough to make Beastmaster playable, I doubt there's some grand printing on the horizon that suddenly changes that.
To be fair, I feel like Beastmaster could be an option in Abzan Midrange in a certain metagame, but that deck can't afford more 3 drops that don't deal with Goblin Rabblemaster, and the default mirror breaker in that matchup has become going over the top with Hornet Queen and Ugin.
Tbh I actually side in Beastmaster in my Abzan Aggro deck against control. They REALLY don't like that card.
What do you take out for it?
Dead removal like Bile Blight.
It's a card you side particularly for control, or fast aggro if you want to lower your curve after siding in all your Drown in Sorrows, Whips, more Blights, etc.
I can't help but feel beast master is a worse Triumph of Ferocity. It has 1 toughness and is the same mana cost.
Triumph kinda has a drawback in today's Standard, however, of being illegal in the format. It was in a format where creature decks that durdled would just get obliterated by Bonfire, Verdict, Revelation or Thundermaw too.
Beastmaster is a powerful card that is poorly positioned in the present metagame and may never improve; same as quite a number of other cards that have seen little play during their Standard tenure, like Ephara, God of the Polis, or Opportunity in previous Standard. It was a reasonable attempt to pick a promo, just one that appears not to have worked.
I don't claim to be an expert in Standard, but I think Beastmaster is just a dud. Which isn't to say that it won't have a dedicated fanbase of non-competitive players.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
I can't wait to get my hands on that Suspension Field. I have such a hard time deciding if I like the art better than the regular foil one, so I'm getting both I guess.
Assuming you are always running the biggest fatties in EDH is a pretty bad idea. The only deck I *MIGHT* run it in would be Doran, but even then, I have access to black, so why would I want to use that to draw on my upkeep as opposed to Phyrexian Arena? Card is just bad. It can see limited usage in standard and maybe for a budget EDH deck that doesn't know what good cards are. The only application I see is sideboard tech vs control.

Sweet art though.

I think being far easier to remove is a bigger downside than being able to attack and block.

I can't think of any EDH deck of mine that I would want a 3 CMC 2/1 that conditionally draws a card on my upkeep. There are so many better options.
MTGS egos at their finest.
Thoughts on proxies:
It's a fine card for people looking to make fun, durdly decks
A few of my friends run it in their Big Beats EDH decks and it's usually quite good
With that said though, I dig the promos, especially the art. Looking forward to getting my hands on them.
However...
Love Beastmaster (fnm's) art!!!
Way to pull a joke there Wizards.

I don't. Ever. Would rather have any number of the following cards: Garruk's Packleader, Heartwood Storyteller, Elvish Visionary, Lifeblood Hydra, Magus of the Library, Primordial Sage, Regal Force, Soul of the Harvest, or Wall of Blossoms.

Hordeling Outburst is garbage? Which standard are you playing???
Beastmaster put in some serious work in draft, not sure how good it is in standard though. Seems like it could be a must-kill however
The kind that isn't Standard at all.
Y'know, because Standard is garbage.
