Or they could have called Phil Foglio
When I started playing MTG I hated his comic-style illustrations, I always felt that most of them didn't really have a place in the mtg universe. Now after more than 10 years I start to appreciate them as a "not too serious" quality mtg had in the old days.
EDIT
@moppi: damn, you beat me on Phil Foglio comment!
Sorry, boo. I'm finally glad that my OLD FOGEY-ness was put into good use in some way. HAHA!

Well, I have to say that this was an unexpected turn for my mono-artist deck out of all things. And while it's quite unfortunate that I couldn't find a pre-order at my local stores with a set price weeks ago, I all of a sudden wouldn't mind paying a bit more than usual for this whole thing.
And speaking of Phil Foglio, I remember that he was actually polled to be the MOST popular Magic artist once upon a time in an old InQuest magazine. While we still would have to question the sampling of the poll itself, it definitely says something about how people's attitude and expectations towards art changed over the years.
I am so very glad I cancelled my preorder and instead put the money towards the 5 Commander decks
As an Angel-lover this FTV is underwhelming: I do not like the art on either Akromas, I lile the original art on Iona a lot more, I don't find that Serra Angel to be that great and my LGS wants 100 dollars for it.

I like that they're willing to take the alt-art from stuff like the oversized cards and put it in print. There's a lot of alt-art out there that needs to get a wider audience, and having on $100 oversized promo cards doesn't really help.

Along with many mods, I've moved shop over to MTGNexus. Come check us out!
All of the new art so far is incredible
I don't usually get FtV products, but if I find one of these at a decent price I'm definitely buying it
Yes, the art is fantastic. I really love the Serra Angel art. Rebecca always does fantastic works.
As regards to the price and overall availability, according to KnickM, you should feel privileged in able to even purchase this. I wouldn't worry about the price anymore.

I love this FTV. However, buying the singles you want is better. I learned that before. I have some of these angels already, so far I'm buying Iona and Serra Angle (because Rebecca Gauy art). That's probably like $35 so far in cards, if not less after the hype.

Wait, what? That's the exact opposite of what I've been saying over the last few pages.

Considering we have seen all the new art (nothing comes to mind in terms of sweet alternate art that could be used now that we have Guay's Serra Angel) and I don't particularly like any of them none of the singles interest me.
Like I said, not getting this will make it easier on my finances since I always try to get all the Commander decks so it's a win for me: no missing out on anything I really want and less money spent. It's just that as the only angel lover in my playgroup everybody is expecting me to get this and so did until I found out that the Commander decks are enemy-coloured
beyond disappoint that they let her terrible art into this set. Would have loved to see alt art on so many other angels by more talented artists that wizards has taken on since dropping her =/
Well, it could've been worse...
.... they could've got Drew Tucker back to draw a fuzzy abstract alt-art...
... or Harold McNeil... *shudder*
Oh god. That is true.
IDK, I just wanted someone... you know.. GOOD doing the alt arts. The Iona is stunning, for example. Imagine if Aleksi Briclot redid firemane angel or something. Would be SOOO good.
FFFFF I'm now seeing that this might knock out a tariel reprint. I will be BEYOND upset if a guay angel knocks out a reprint that we actually need in foil for edh. :/

I never liked the Serra Angel art that Rebecca Gauy did to me it seems to small or distant. I liked the Mark Zug version better with the close up picture. With that said who is buying this for another Serra Angel anyways.
Edit, is this the same art that is on the core set serra angel that Rebecca did or the promo, the promo looks good.
Edit, just realized the art I was thinking about was Greg Staples that's the one I disliked sorry .

Wizards hasn't dropped her, She dropped Wizards. She makes too much real money off of commisions and selling her art nowadays that the WOTC money wasn't worth the time.
Perfect time to put this art on a playable magic card.

Does the Serra Angel count as a new art?
I'm pretty sure we have seen all the new art, all that is left is to see which angel gets the art that was shown when the product was announced
Edit: my mistake, there may be one new art or two if Guay's Serra is not considered new art
Who cares about tariel? She can go in a conspiracy set or something. It's not like she's worth a ton, or even a precon since she's perfectly castable and isn't insanely op in such a deck. I guess a precon might limit foil opportunities though.

Tariel would be purely for the purposes of getting her in foil.

I think it's fantastic that Wizards continues to use an artist whose art is unique and flavorful, not to mention elegant, rather than more and more CG.
I could be alone in this: I believe the fantasy genre is a huge universe and it can offer more than just characters with dramatic posture or splashy spell effect. Classic MtG art have its up and downs, but I truly appreciate the feel. Rob Alexander, for one, did many wonderful pieces for Ice Age that brought the era's desolation to live, where the new Coldsnap expansion couldn't with its modern arts.

I'm guessing it was a simple "Name your favorite", which would naturally favor artists with very distinctive styles, as other artists would naturally split votes. I would prefer a poll which asked for each of a number of artists whether people have a favorable or unfavorable view of the artist, and the artist with the best split would be the "favorite" artist, though the artist who has the largest number of fans calling him their favorite could also be viewed as the "favorite".
Never understand the dislike for Guay. I always put her next to Nielson in artistic style, who seems to have more universal appeal.
Guay and Nielsen are both among my favorite MTG artists. I've seen more appreciation than dislike for Guay. I think it's just the dudebros who have an issue with it. It's a fantasy game, it's nice to get elegant fantasy artwork than gore or scenes of violence all the time. Otherwise, MTG would just be War: The Gathering.

Yah, beats me if it will be or not.
It's not new art in that we've all seen it before (heck, the piece is probably close to 15 years old)...
... but it's new art in that it's never seen print before on a normal-sized Magic card...
