Harsh Sustenance compares well to Massive Raid and Warleader's Helix. It's removal, it's a win condition, and it's lifegain. In decks that have creatures, white mana, and black mana, this common instant may be a potent addition.
Pauper will happily accept all of these cards, I believe. Black/White Exort will be a fun deck!
B/W could be playable if it can find a deck. U/G and R/W ones have some potential but probably not. U/R one is too expensive for what it does, since the decks that want "nuke a bear, draw a card" don't usually care about damage to the face. B/G one is just sad compared to other black removal spells.
someone please tell me that the 1wb card is going in modern bw tokens.
I could see sideboard, but not sure about main just because it is almost a win-more card; if you have enough tokens that this card matters, you should win anyways. I could be wrong though, it is a very interesting card.
My thoughts were, it costs 1 more than zealous persecution but they do similar things and depending on what you are looking for you may want 1 or the other.
Zealous - Pros: It can be a combat trick. It can kill opposing creatures. You can use the damage against planeswalkers (if you are going to hit)
Harsh Sustainance - Pros: It gains you life buying you the extra turn, it pushes additional life loss through despite blockers, it can win the game when it isn't your turn.
War Flare is very solid. As far as blowout cards at Commons goes, this is pretty good. Not much to say, definitely run some but not too many of them. Also triggers Inspiration, I guess?
Anyone saying that Cunning Strike is bad might want to look up the last time WotC did removal that plusses you at Common rarity (hint: Boulderfall). I honestly had to double-check this to make sure it was not a Uncommon - it's just something that WotC doesn't does anymore, and in Morph-Land 2 damage is pure gold.
Harsh Sustenance, like many cards of its kin, seems like a very cool 1-of for Limited. Can win you the game but as we know the mix of "possible winmore" plus "awful topdeck" kills cards.
Grim Contest seems bad. Prey Upon is great because it's Green and kills creatures. Black Prey Upon would be a laughingstock - and this costs 3 and is multicolored. It's removal, however, and as such will see some Limited play, and the design+flavor combo is cool tho.

I'm actually at least 60% certain we're gonna see this turn into a staple, if not this standard then the next one.
