I know the Grandmaster is pretty exciting, but man, can we just appreciate the power of the Intro Pack rares this time around? All of them look really solid, especially the Black demon! All of them are pretty neat and nothing strikes me as terrible.
While the cards ooze with power, simple and elegant they are not.
Soulfire will be one of the chase mythic, obviously. It's just bonker. Forever casual appeal at the very least, potentially broken.
All others are great limited bombs. Well, except the infiltrator which is too complicated for its own good. Yeah, fun mini guessing game, but nothing to write home about. I'd rather run mystic of the hidden way.
The green shaman is obviously for the morph draft deck. The white general for the abzan outlast draft deck.
I don't get all the hype around the soulfire grandmaster, buying back anything won't happen until late in the game and that is if this thing is still alive. Other than that, its just a bear that gains you some life and can pretty much only be played in decks where your life total isn't super relevant.
So, it looks Abzan will get only one (if any at all), black, mythic and it better be good.
There's still potentially another white and/or green Mythic out there. Also I don't think outside of the hybrid cards we're getting an enemy coloured Clan flavoured card.
Could that be a mythic cycle? Hybrids more powerful than the khans?
This demon feels really strong for a intropack rare. 5/4 flying, a decent ability and no drawback for 5?
The soulfire grand master is just busted. He is a must-kill-very-fast creature otherwise it will be hard to keep up with all the Lightning Helix and Warleader Helix.
It's really too much power for a splashable drop 2.
Still not sold on Grand Master either, although it is a great pivot card. Early pressure to hang with aggro decks and late game redundancy for Whip/Control matchups in the Jeskai tokens build. I think it has a place in Modern Jeskai Control sideboards. I really hate that it's a Whip for the non-Whip decks of the format though. Did we REALLY need more lifelink?
Anywho, $40 prerelease and $10-25 after two months in Standard. We'll see how it goes.
Soulfire Grand Master is rightly getting all the love and attention here as a Standard, Modern, Commander, and possibly Legacy-playable monster bear. But Archfiend of Depravity also seems crazy to me. A 5/4 flyer with all upside that devastates decks that try to "go wide" for just 3BB is awesome. It's obviously a multiplayer staple, but I think it is good enough for standard too - black's problem is its difficulty with Flyers and its difficulty against decks that just vomit goblin tokens onto the battlefield that overwhelm its amazing single-target removal, and this neatly fixes both problems.
How does black have problems with mass removal?
Bileblight, Mutilate, Black Sun Zenith, Massacre Wurm, Killing Wave...
(Unless you're just talking about standard)
Yeah, just talking Standard. Drown in Sorrow seems too slow so far, and Bile Blight's double black at two mana is a problem sometimes too. This is also double black but at a stage of the game where it hurts less, AND it shuts the door and keeps it shut, crippling any and all future Hordeling Outbursts and Raise the Alarms and Hornet Queens. Plus its a strong clock and can be used proactively sort of.

I understand the interest in Master but I don't think he's gonna be next VoR. I could see it spiking (a LOT judging from these reactions) early and then coming back down, like most. Not really my kind of card so I'm probably wrong.
Archfiend? THAT is my kind of card, yes. He'll find a home somewhere I'm sure. Faustian Bargain = Demon = Flavor-meets-Gameplay HOME RUN(imo) More please!!
Black was always my favorite color but damn I must say that Jeskai is really my favorite tribe in this block. The flavor and art is just awesome and they don't lack in power too which brings us to Soulfire Grand Master.
Holy moly this card is kinda crazy. It's easy to think that this is an aggro card when you see that it is a 2/2 for 2 but all the abilities are actual more useful in slower strategies with Lifelink negating the damage that aggro decks can muster.
And that last ability...
Let's say that this is a basically a control mages wet dream when all your removal and counter spells come with buyback locking the other player out.
This card is both good in the early and late game and has to be killed fast no matter what deck you are playing.
I won't be surprised in the slightest if this card will be very successful and expensive.
On the other hand we got Brimaz, King of Oreskos recently who despite all the hype about him can be considered a bust so we have to see I guess.
Also agree with a few others here. That demon is quite powerful too and shouldn't be overlooked. Keep two, sacrifice the rest can be quite punishing for certain decks.

Maybe a bust in that he hasn't dominated Standard, but he's a still a $25 Card. I don't think this guy will drop below $15 for a long time especially if they find a way to break him in Vintage/Legacy
looking forward to killing soulfire grandmasters before any spells start lifelinking. the card is amazing but its a removal magnet if I've ever seen one. the scenarios some people are envisioning are a bit of magical xmasland. that card is going to get killed on sight like 80% of the time. that said, its going to crush the souls of so many aggro decks.
Oh boy, that Grand Master. Red spells had never gained so much life.
I wish to see an EHD game with the table full with tokens, and the Grand Master's controller casting Chain Reaction.
Oh boy.

I agree, the demon can be devastating to certain decks the same way Desecration was. Though costing more than Desecration doesn't make him quite as much of a threat overall. I really can't get over SoulFire. It is just absolutely nuts. That card will see broad format play and it will probably do some major work.
As someone who likes play aggro, I'm hoping for something like Skullcrack or Sulfuric Vortex. Otherwise I'm going to have a hard time in standard with all the lifegain.

Yep, certainly looks like Voice of Resurgence all over again. Rather pathetic from WotC, but they don't seem likely to change.
