I think that the January and March release dates for Fate Reforged and Dragon of tarkir is because WOTC want to prepare for the 2 block per year and the change in standard rotation structure. Just think. In a typical 2 set block, large sets are the newest for 4 months and small sets are the newest for 2 months.
January March July September. The monthly gap between these months i 2-4-2-4
The change in release date for the third set is so the beginning of each new block will start six months apart to allow each block to be in standard for equal 18 month periods. Otherwise, if the old Oct/Feb/May/July...ish schedule was kept, you would have Oct/Feb blocks in standard for 19ish months and May/July blocks in standard for 17ish months.
this story seems like a ripoff of eldrazi and innistrad (stirring disorder, planeswalkers do something, big monsters come out), which means it should be insane. yay!
It kind of seems like the reverse of the Rise storyline, where instead they are fixing things.
Also, mostly because this is a huge pet peeve of mine, but I hope there is an obnoxious amount of dragons. Like at all commonanalities, ranging from 2-7 CMC. Dragons have been iconic creatures in the game forever, but have frequently lagged in competitive ability because they are often too expensive. Yes, there were exceptions, which all cost around 5 or more mana, but the game had so many playable not dragons for basically the entirety of it.

Plus this game is designed by the same company that produces Dungeons and...you guessed it..DRAGONS.

I really doubt that. Avacyn Restored was supposed to be "Angels matters" set and in the end we didn't get an "obnoxious" amount of Angels. Unless of course, Dragons in DTK are treated like Eldrazi in ROE.
Another interesting thing about the preview dragon: it definitely seems it's a Mardu dragon, as its lightning remind me of the one from Howl of the Horde.

Any one notice that aside from the dragon being red white and black it has the exact same color pattern as Oros red on top white underbelly and black head ridges and claws.
Yeah, this was my first thought aswell. His colour scheme looks just like that of Oros.
Also, I hope Wizards will do this right. KtK is probably my favourite set after the original Ravnica. I hope they won't ruin it like they ruined Innistrad with Avacyn restored. I am also getting kinda weary of the formula we've been getting since Shards of Alara. With the first set introducing the world and the next two featuring a conflict which threatens the whole world. I hope the last set here will be KtK, only with dragons. Not something along the lines of ''everyone vs Bolas''.
Lightning-based dragons have a pretty good track record in Standard (Thundermaw Hellkite, Stormbreath Dragon). Hopefully this one maintains that track record (because I agree, the art is spectacular).
hah, you're right, how could I've forgotten? Now no matter how badmouthed a new dragon gets, ask yourself, does it have lightning in its art? yes? then it's playable
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.

Was Lightning Dragon a pretty sweet card back in the day? I know it has some of the most amazing artwork ever! Furyborn Hellkite didn't quite make the cut...Thunder Dragon probably didn't either.
This set is actually going to make me very sad if it's full of dragons, especially great ones. I collect them and they'll probably be mythics, which means a lot of foil legendary dragons that I'll never be able to afford. Damn you EDH!
Warlords of Khanar was the original name for Khans of Tarkir, but it was changed because it was too close to World of Warcaraft's Warlords of Draenor and it was easier to just change the name rather than fight a legal battle over it. This dragon design doesn't rule out serpentine dragons either, the double-pair of feathered wings show that the dragons will have traits based on the clan symbols. I wouldn't be surprised to see Wurms as sultai dragons and Chinese dragons for the Jeskai.
I completely agree! It seems to me that each wedge will have its own type of dragon: wurms for sultai, Chinese dragons for jeskai, lightning dragons that remind us of Oros for mardu, super-scaled Dragons like Elder Land Wurm for Abzan, and snowy forest dragons for temur. I also think that they'll be dragons of all sizes and cmc's and that we'll be given as many as can fit in a big set or it will be All dragons like Scourge was only creatures...
A guy can dream...
Finally, I think Ugin has the potential to have his own planeswalker card that is fully colorless but with a colored mana cost, and he'll make Karn look like a joke because he's a dragon and he's "as old as time itself."!!!
I thought of Lightning dragon as well, but wasn't sure either. And furyborn hellkite couldn't make the cut, because there was too little lightning in it. I mean look at the lightning bolt in the artwork, it's just one single bolt of lightning and it's so far on the edge of the card, it's almost invisible. That new dragon is much more focused on the lightning, there's more of it, and it's purple, it just has to be good!
I wouldn't worry so much on expensive edh foils. At least where I live, everyone jumps on the hype bandwagon of whatever card is "broken" or "too good" from the new set, so it's easy to trade for "crap" no one wants, i.e. edh foils

Actually there was a fair bit of angels in AVR. But before then there were innumerable playable angels over the history of the game.
I mean go back to the origins of the game - Shivan Dragon was popular at kitchen tables, but Serra Angel won tournaments. The trend has almost always been that way.
I can picture this art to be 'Dragons Of Tarkir' alternate version of Mardu's Ascendancy, although clearly not picturing the same kind of card,as it seems to be depicting the same clan and we can see the same banners in the back. Thus, we could expect one mythic Dragon per wedge and that's it— alternates of the Khans. But this would imply that this block is indeed a wedge block, what Wizards have been denying since the announcement of Khans. This can't be.
I agree there probably will be one mythic dragon per clan (though I think along with a lot of non-mythics). At the same time, I think the clans will lose at least one of their color identities, so that they aren't wedges anymore. Hybrid costs in Fate Reforged bridge those two nicely. The preview card, Yasova, fits both into current Temur colors and either Gruul or Simic because of the hybrid ability cost.
An unfortunate side effect is that we wouldn't be able to continue to use the clan names to represent the wedge colors in the future, if this were true.
Ok guys, I'm callig this :
-Abzan will have a dragon with a fortress on it.
-Temur = huge frosty dragon ? (See the Unwritten, Rimescale Dragon)
-5 mytics will be a dragon of each clan
I'd assume Abzan dragons would have the same opalescent scales found on Abzan armor in Khans. Assuming the heavily armored soldiers in the key art are Abzan they apparently still have a scale motif but with metal armor rather than actual dragon scales.

One of the posters here totally called it re: the expansion symbol being a twist on the KTK symbol-
like, back when we first got the Khans symbol.
That's pretty impressive!
Thanks!
Edit: Ugin is in Fate Reforged (almost) for sure, he was the first picture we got, and my thinking is, when do you not get that card in the set? The question is if Bolas gets one in FRF or DTK. The Crux of fate card (spoiled FRF) has me optimistic.
A thing you could see is 'hybrid wedge' appearing:something like ' ' costs, which are wedge but way easier to cast and with less need of fixing. I trully doubt they would do such a thing and not call it 'wedges' though. But it seems very nice and easy to do plus it allows an easy 'M16' direction ('hybrid shards' with reprints of popular hybrid cards like Fulminator Mage, featuring Bolas while 'Dragons' features Ugin).
MaRo said on his Tumblr that would confuse too many players, so I doubt we'll see that.

I played with Lightning Dragon back in the day...it made a great finisher for my Sligh decks. It wasn't as big as the more recent lightningy dragons, but it was very effective.
