On Day One, players will compete in three rounds of real-life Vintage Masters Booster Draft followed by four rounds of Modern. Vintage Masters booster packs will be generated on Magic Online and physically re-constructed for this event.
So people will be opening Power on-camera and drafting it. Sounds amazing! Where are they going to get all those super-expensive cards?
Physically reconstructed? Wizards will do everything they can to prevent making a real paper vintage masters lol
Considering they're not legally allowed to, I'm not surprised.
Still, this is plenty cool. I'm sure they either have a stash of cards somewhere (like the ones they put into the Hidden Treasures Zendikar packs) or they're going to buy enough stuff to cover it. Remember that it's only 24 players, so they're only opening two boxes worth of the stuff. I'm not sure what the frequency of power is in VMA, but I doubt there will be more than 2-3 pieces of it opened.

Not legally allowed?
He's referring to the reserved list. They are legally allowed, they just are sticking by a promise they made back in Duelist #10 because of reasons.
I suspect they will pull the cards out of the super-secret vault in which they stored playsets of every set as they printed them.
Or something cool like that.
Or maybe they will be hitting up the SCG booth early that morning when MTGO tells them they need 6 Mox Sapphire and they only brought 5.
Regardless, it is going to be exciting and totally new to see Vintage cards drafted in real life.
That promise makes no sense in 2014. The reality of the 90s vs today is very different. The reserved list only blocks Legacy and Vintage from being played without shelling hundreds (or thousands). I think WOTC should abolish the reserved list or at least modify its reprint policy to allow staples from the past to see print today for exceptional reasons, i.e. stuff like Vintage Masters. Imagine the money they could get from having such a product in stores...and the price wouldn't fall THAT low for one single reprint of say the Power 9. And even if it does, Magic is a game, the collectors can still have their cards in toploaders never to be tampered with.
On-topic, I am waffling between PV and Sam Black as my favorite player to win. I think Sam Black plays more Legacy, and probably the better shot at winning the Vintage draft portion.

The odds of getting one piece of power in this set is 1 in 53 packs, the world champs has 24 competitors so I'm sure they have no problem getting the 2 pieces of power that will likely be opened in this event.
Even if the packs busted are super lucky and multiple power is opened like 4 that is still not a big deal. The odds of a foil piece of power has to be in the 1 in 1000 packs, it also means nothing for the MTG crew because whats done in all these drafts is foils are taken out and replaced with an identical card. So if Reid Duke opened his pack in a Khans Pro Tour draft and sees a Sorin in it that Sorin could have been foil when the pack was initially busted he would have no way of knowing.
What if someone drafts a Foil Lotus?
Do they get a Beta one IRL?
Foils are replaced in PT drafts afaik, I assume any foil could be non-foil as packs get reconstructed. I doubt they can keep any cards from the VMA draft.
I'm thinking they will just have printed proxies for all the stuff they can't print. Something with a different back or border, not allowed to be played anywhere else but the event. It makes the most sense since they won't print the real thing.

They could also use any old version of the card, remember these things are stamped by the judge. So having a unlimited version of a card is fine. I would be blown away if they used proxies for the cards, its just not something they do.

If they did that, the official proxy power 9 would be far rarer than the real thing and would probably end up being worth more, despite not being tournament legal.
Just 72 packs of this will be opened so there will most likely be just 1 piece of power. IF they printed new cards for this event it would be an 1-of-a-kind unique, with a chance to be more expensive than an Alpha mint. I'm saying just 'a chance', because the printing of it would set a certain precedent so the hardcore collectors could anticipate more future printings like that.

But you know what would be cooler? Gold-bordered cards available for widespread drafting everywhere.
Stay reasonable, be mindful of your expectations and don't feed the trolls.

Hey guys. It's been great. But we're cancelling physical Magic Cards and we're gonna just do MTGO now.
Here's some Vintage Masters booster packs.
