Sorry I realize rabble was a buy a box and was a bad example. How about I talk about all the promo bile blights and banishing lights in cases at multiple game shops around here. It isnt just one shop and I know players at my lgs arent winning than immediately reselling thier promos. It seems very common practice here. Edit: also I have been going to fnm sincd before it was called fnm. Multiple shops through the years...are other fnms really for fun? I cant think of many in northeast ohio that are not just full of standard spikes like myself.
I am surprised both Vintage and Pauper/Peasant are not mentioned
I kind of understand why Vintage is being left out in the rain, but Puper/Peasent? I can't wrap my head a
This opens up the doors for creativity that can bring in customers. For example, what if I wanted to Winston Draft w/ a buddy at a shop that has little to no players?
Now imagine a shop that has a back stock of booster packs they want to move, pick another alternate draft style? This opens up a lot of possibilities.
I am very pleased by this news, since I much prefer modern and legacy over standard, and this shall help to gain greater support for those formats. I do agree that it was very odd that vintage was not mentioned, especially since legacy was; what reason would WotC have to not officially sanction vintage as an FNM format?
Proxies won't be allowed at all. Vintage, Cube, and your own formats will have to use real cards.
What's to stop "invent your own format" from interpreting sharpied islands in a certain way? Those are real magic cards after all, and you make the rules for how the cards work.
Woot, Emperor can now be a sanctioned FNM format. I can't be the only one who is overly fond of this format - it was the go-to awesome multiplayer format on MTGO back in the day. Shame EDH is taking over everything.
Heh, so core stores will get 20% more FNM promos, advanced stores 150% more, advanced plus 275% more. FNM promos are going to be worth less. Ironically, takes effect the month after stoke the flames, which is highly desired right now.
Stores have always been able to sanction more than one FNM - so this really isn't affecting the promo distribution all that much aside from giving stores the freedom to not award it to top 2 plus 2 random. My LGS has run 2 FNM (draft and Standard) for well over two years now.

I think you overestimate how much a lot of people value FNM promos. I frequently trade for them the minute they're handed out to people at my LGS because most of the people could care less about an overpriced foil. If a store isn't handing out the promos at their FNMs - report them to wizards, but if you're just upset some store buys and sells them - you should let it go. As for buy a box - I just bought two boxes of M15 last week and got two free rabblemasters - you gotta buy the box to get the promo free!

If it's a sanctioned event it cannot allow proxies, it's that simple. You can run a 10-proxy event at a LGS if you have enough people willing to participate, but if you want to run an "official" Vintage event you need the actual Moxen and so on.

Can someone explain to me what the difference in promos are? Will we get promos? If so, will we get more, less or the same number as before? My local gave us fnm promos for just turning up and playing. It'd be nice if that was still the case.
Stores will get a number of promos based on their store level rather than directly the number of FNM events run:
Core: 5
Advanced: 10
Advanced Plus: 15
Plus, they'll officially be able to distribute them however they want, rather than to the top finishers.
Sweet! I've been dying to play block party for some time. Perhaps now I can convince my LGS to set one up. Though I would love to play it in an expanded continuous tournament format where, once you win with a deck from a certain block, you can't chose that block again until someone gets a certain number of wins and it starts over.
Hope my LGS sets up Commander FNMs. It's reasonably popular, but I hardly ever play magic outside of events at my store, so I haven't had a use for my commander decks. Hopefully this changes that.
Some really fun drafts are Reject Rare and Mix and Match drafts (buy 3 packs of anything they have in stock at current retail).
Not sure commander FNM would be all that fun. Most of the competitive commanders are actually unfun to play against killing the whole table between turn 3-6 through a counterspell.
I have Sliver Queen hermit druid combo and Oona mill everyone combo for Star city 4 person Pods. I sit down and at least one person groans not you again. I need to scrub out of SCG events less.

Im not upset about not getting a promo rabble I had 2 and traded them away for a playset lol. In your own words you proved the difference between the stores we go to. At mine its one promo no matter how many you buy and after release day the store keeps the rest and resells all of them.
I mean, hell, we're all on a forum for something that most people would describe as a "children's card game"...do what makes you happy. You are never too old to enjoy yourself.

Sadly Wizards guidelines are really "limit one per customer" but as the store judge and a really good customer who spends a lot, I get a little more leeway. My LGS never moves enough full boxes to give them all away for the actual promotion though, so he's not cheating anyone out of them if they were to buy a box. Its a shame to hear your LGS does it - if they're not handing the out like they should, it doesn't hurt to report them to WotC. At the very least they'll receive a polite reminder of the procedures for the promos. Sometimes, that's all a store needs to straighten up their act.
Well... This is awesome. Sometimes I like Standard, but I prefer EDH, Modern, and even Legacy. These other formats, Chaos Draft, Star, Emperor, Wizard's Tower? Gets my geek levels up rather nicely. I grew up with Vanguard as an awesome way to pay. Maybe they could make more? Please?
Does "Invent your own Format" allow for formats where proxies are legal? Like, couldn't you just write the rules of the custom format to essentially codify proxies without actually calling them as such?
Probably not. I don't think "See, it's not *really* proxies, it's part of my custom format" is going to fly if wizards comes down on them.

Where did you hear that, and why would WotC do that?

The pic clearly mentions "Invent Your Own Format".
Pauper and Peasant are game, as long as your LGS is ok with it.

Booster Draft All night, every Friday night. (Seriously, only a couple of stores play Standard on FNM, ONCE a month)
Standard
UR Control
Modern
Merfolk

Avacyn did nothing wrong!

I'd kill for Friday Night Vintage. I'd get out of work early to make it to FNM for that kind of business.
I'd love that setup as well. Mash different sets together for a wacky draft? I'm in.
