This news is strange. My only conclusion is that Magic is dying.
My lgs has two draft nights a week, standard fnm, and Saturday std or sometimes modern. This just to help fringe stores with low turnout participation? I guess it does sanction some off the wall formats. Interesting at the least.
Our store said it is going to increase the number of FNM tournaments from one to two with a more casual tournament starting at 4pm that will likely be commander. This change will increase the amount of players and money for wizards. However, I predict commander staples are going to go insane soon. I expect duals to be getting close to $500.
I've felt FNM needed a change for awhile. I never expected anything this dramatic, but I think it is positive overall. I don't think it means Magic is dying.
Heh, so core stores will get 20% more FNM promos, advanced stores 150% more, advanced plus 275% more. FNM promos are going to be worth less. Ironically, takes effect the month after stoke the flames, which is highly desired right now.
I think some people are underestimating the impact on the market.
Dual commander will increase in popularity impacting prices.
Some larger stores that could run the odd legacy tournament will and this will increase demand for legacy staples.
Foil prices will increase as people like to foil cubes, commader and legacy decks.
There is a small chance pauper may become popular and commons will get to mtgo prices.
If you really think magic is dying you couldn't be more wrong. The game has grown like clockwork. For magic to die it would take several colossal **** ups that WotC has yet to make.
Duals going up as a result of this seems unlikely. You still just want 1 dual of each color combination in each EDH deck of the originals. Doubt this pushes commander any more than they already do.

Was being sarcastic, just as I dont see a clear end goal here. Obviously they think it will help the game more than forcing people into standard, but not sure thats the most profitable route, unless it just indirectly increases overall popularity.

No, the dual uptick will come from Legacy being sanctionable as FNM. It won't be huge, there won't be many non-European stores with the following for it right away, but this move right after the Onslaught fetch reprint could cause an explosion in Legacy popularity.

People don't really pay attention to it because well, most people don't play legacy. But every set there are some legacy cards that you just want to test out and at a local level it's more fun and interesting to open or trade for them than to buy online. And T2 players are the most pushy and pushable traders so we actually do buy a bunch of boosters.
If we get a Legacy FNM which means more chances of gathering store credit playing the format we love to get the staples we need for our deck or those things we need for a second deck, there's another source of money for the store there.
This went from only the T2/Draft kids money mattering on friday, to everyone's money mattering on friday and should see stores get more traffic.
1st of all vintage is not an invent your own format. it's officially sanctioned and has official banned and restricted lists by WotC.
even if they want to disown vintage, then with invent your own format, one can reinvent a new vintage with new rules and banned and restricted lists.
BYOS seems the most interesting to me. say Alara Shards + Khans Wedges would be interesting. or the old and new Mirrodin or Ravnica blocks respectively.

@HeleneBergeot: @RyeABC You need only two players for casual formats; this will remain true with the FNM changes
I am not entirely sure how to take that, but it sounds like events no longer have to be 8 players? If that's true, that is great news! I will happily run 4-player round robin Legacy events if people will show up. We normally can't get 8 for things like that, but 4 is doable on a regular basis I think. I don't know about 2 player "events" though.
I guess this is more of a way to include all the players who come in on Friday night? We get several who just play casually amongst themselves. Maybe the idea is to get them registered and give them the opportunity for getting some promos. Maybe charge an entry fee and generate some revenue for the store, too?
I wonder what pricing would be like for these events? Like... now you can sanction pack wars....how would you price that? How would you price for wizards tower?
What Im curious and scared about is what will stores do with the FNM promos if not forced to give them to the winners? I know from 1st hand that the stores around me have TONS upon TONS of promos they just keep and do not give out to resell at top value to people. Why is rabble master 20+ when stores have 50 of them in a back room that they slow roll to the players.
Even if you can make up your own formats, I bet they don't want to explicitly encourage proxies. Which would be why Vintage is not listed.
You could make your own format where sharpied islands = black lotus, but that still wouldn't be sanctionable as "Vintage" because those aren't the official Vintage rules.
Sweet, I can Ad Nauseam out people in EDH and get a FNM promo for it.
Good change, I welcome out though I am mostly playing Standard these days.

The "Crazy One", playing casual magic and occasionally dipping his toes into regular play since 1994.
Currently focusing on Pre-Modern (Mono-Black Discard Control) and Modern (Azorious Control, Temur Rhinos).
Find me at the Wizard's Tower in Ottawa every second Saturday afternoons.
Stores may distribute the promos any way they want? I hope there are some restrictions, so that they can't pass them out to whomever they know and like, or sell them at the store, or give them to the judges or whatever they want. Any more info on this? I can't get the video to load.

This looks pretty awesome. I wish WotC considered it it's own format. It's big enough.
