A cool detail I missed before: Stores may chose up to three formats to schedule ahead of time, but they may also run any number of additional FNM events on the same night.
The distribution of promo cards is changing. Promo cards are no longer required to be given to winners. Stores may distribute them any way they want. Stores will receive a number of promos based on their level:
Core stores get 5.
Advanced stores get 10.
Advanced+ stores get 15.
So to address some concerns below, promos are NOT being discontinued. The way they are distributed is being changed.
From twitter:
@HeleneBergeot: @RyeABC You need only two players for casual formats; this will remain true with the FNM changes
EDH, on the other hand, is more like a monster truck rally. It's more about the spectacle than the race, the games go long, and it's not usually clear who's in the lead until there's only one truck left.*
Single player EDH is like two guys smacking each other with pillows... until one of them pulls out a shotgun.
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
Terrifc news. Maybe I'll be able to play Magic on Fridays now!

Due to real-life obligations, I am taking a long break from Magic which may include missing the local Legacy GP. Apologies for not being able to keep my threads updated.
It won't end the tyranny of Standard (because Standard is probably the easiest thing to run), but it allows offbeat shops and metas to be able to participate in FNM.
Sure, it's a little more disorganized, but I'm happy to see Wizards acknowledging that lots of people don't play Standard. And for those of us that don't, it's nice to be treated like we're still a part of the Magic community.
Variety is the spice of life. Embrace. Enjoy. Pick up a new format.
Playing millions of cards every turn... Slowly and systematically obliterating any chance my opponent has of winning... Clicking the multitude of locking mechanisms into place... Not even trying to win myself until turn 10+ once I have nigh absolute control... Watching my opponent desperately trying to navigate the labyrinthine prison that I've constructed... Seeing the light of hope fade and ultimately extinguished in an excruciatingly slow manner... THAT'S fun Magic.
We have 2-3 users that are dramatically making this thread incomprehensible and non-productive for anyone else to possibly join in the discussion. This needs to change.
Every time I see [ktkenshinx] post in here, I get the impression of a stern dad walking in on a bunch of kids trying to do something dumb and just shaking his head in disappointment.
Near Mint: The same as Slightly Played, but we threw some Altoids in the box we stored it in to cover up the scent of dead mice. Slightly Played: The base condition for all MTG cards. This card looks OK, but there’s one minor annoying ding in it that will always irritate and distract you whenever you draw it. Moderately Played: This card looks like it survived the Tet Offensive tucked inside the waistband of GI underwear. It may smell like it, too. Heavily Played: This card looks like the remains of Mohammed Atta’s passport after 9/11. It may be playable if you double-sleeve it to stop the chunks from falling out. The condition formerly known as "Washing Machine Grade" Damaged: This card is the unfortunate victim of a Mirrorweave/March of the Machines/Chaos Confetti/Mindslaver combo.
[M]aking counterfeit cards is the absolute height of dishonesty. Ask yourself this question: Since most people...are totally cool with the use of proxies...what purpose do [high] quality counterfeit cards serve?
I disapprove. Heavily disapprove. Quite possibly could kill Modern at my local LGS and screw with Standard.
If Modern dies because of this change, I would assume FNM was providing life support for Modern in the first place and that the real issue is that you could't get players to play Modern without some incentive like FNM. If you're concerned about this killing Modern at your local store, you need to drum up support for Modern in your area because I assume that an LGS isn't deciding to run some wacky format for FNM unless most of the players want to do that.
Just got to say, you've definitely earned distinction as an MTGS hero
Quote from Stardust »
Because he's the hero MTGS deserves, and the one it needs right now. So we'll global him. Because he can take it. Because he's not just our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. An expired rascal.

If you notice, "Invent Your Own Format" is on there. This covers Vintage, Pauper, and anything else in my opinion.
True. But it's a little disappointing that they'd list things like Reject Rare Draft, Vanguard, & other fringe formats that arguably do not have the same level of interest as Vintage & Pauper among the players.

I'm thinking the vast majority of those won't be used by the stores. The net effect of this change will be some stores opting for a monthly or quarterly Legacy event and stores with more casual than competitive crowds running Commander or Cube. I can't see anything else there ever seeing an actual event.

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
I heard they are discontinuing FNM promos, so what is the point of officially calling it FNM then?
Does anyone have confirmation of this? If so that's a REALLY bad trade-off I think.

After axing the MPR program, then downgrading the prerelease promo from a Mythic to a rare, would this REALLY surprise you?
The difference here is they rarely do stuff to hurt stores directly, I mean they realize local stores are the lifeblood of the game and making FNM less attractive directly hurts stores. I mean you could argue products like FTV and Commander's Arsenal are made to directly boost profits of local gaming shops by allowing gaming stores to easily charge more than retail prices for them.
Yeah, as a lot of people stated, this really won't have much of an effect on FNM. Commander, Cube, Pauper, and Legacy will likely be the only formats that are actually added to stores' FNM repertoire.
I hope I can find a place that does Commander FNMs.
Yeah, my initial reaction was to rejoice and start petting my Niv-Mizzet deck like it was Mr. Bigglesworth. Then I realized that the chances of Commander getting sanctioned at any of the LGSs around me was probably not that great. Still, I'm waving the banner of hope for the time being.
Posted on the WotC site is that they are changing FNM distribution to based on store level, with stores able to distribute any way they wish at events (randomly, top 4 placers, etc). No numbers posted as to how many promos; I'd assume stores would get a minimum of 2 a week.
In addition, promo cards typically awarded for top finishers will no longer be tied to performance. Stores will instead receive a specific amount of promo cards based on their store level on a weekly basis:
Good news for store owners cause now they can make what they have always done ( Attracting players to tournaments by making it be a formart the playgroup like... )
Don't get it wrong... Stores will still make Standard and Modern FNM ... But now they can do a EDH , pauper , legacy , planechase , commander, and many more FNMs , This is great news

Stores will now be able to sanction ANY format for FNM, including made up formats.
Also, the promo distribution is changing, but I didn't type up all the details in time. I'll update once I have more info.
