Someone at wizards REALLY likes Caves of Koilos, apparently. modern event deck, m15 and now this. Maybe the ffl is dominated by BW and they're tired of borrowing each others playsets all the time.
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.
Hey hey hey guys, it isn't like you are going to pay $25 for this thing... more like $15 haha.
With the likes of Vampire Onslaught, Rally and Rout, and Creep and Conquer, WOTC won't take any risks to make the deck sell for over $40. Remember that if you know that the deck sucks, then the deck probably wasn't aimed for you.
That totals up to 78 dollars on TCGPlayer, not taking into account the rest. (And does the event deck come with boosters too?) So, yeah, it's easy to make an attractive list when you bust the MSRP by a wide margin. Even dropping the mire would still be more than 48 dollars. To make it under your autralian price you'd have to cut rabblemaster and teh deck woudl still be quite a bargain.
Except he SAID they sell for $40 where he is...and the MSRP is $24.99. Just because one store realizes no one wants this garbage for $25 and lowers the price doesn't change what the store paid for them. Know what else was 3x the MSRP? Modern Event Decks. Look how well those sold.
It all costs the same to print, if the stores didnt jack up the prices or if there was a set retail price instead of a suggested one, maybe they wouldnt be afraid to put together a decent deck. But we all know that.
Intro decks are 22$ in South Africa and this Event Deck is 39$
I have the Dragons Maze Event deck and compared to that, this deck sucks big time.
This deck didn't need a fetchland, it needed better cards, I don't care if it only has 1x of important cards, that's the theme with Event decks generally anyways, it needed better cards in general, even if you take the decks listed by users here ITT and halfed the contents it would be a better buy... This deck is just far too average for what you pay.
Wizards should just release a deck above Intro, but sub Event level

They used to have something similar to your "play deck". They were theme decks from the block expansions, while core set theme decks were more for beginners. Block expansion theme decks were fun to play against each other, and not boring to use. Core set theme decks were super boring, and mind numbingly dull for people who already know how to play the game, not to mention that the deck sucks majorly, worse than intro packs. The block expansion theme decks had close to the same number of rares, uncommons, and commons as the current intro packs while the 40 card core set theme decks had close to the same number of rares, uncommons and commons as the 41 card intro packs from Alara and Zendikar blocks. The theme decks, both block expansion and core set theme decks became intro packs, which are in the level between the block expansion and core set theme decks, that is not awesome enough, and too crap. Block expansion theme decks rarely had vanilla creatures. I hated that theme decks became intro packs, because WOTC took awesome theme decks, the block expansion ones, which had mechanical an flavorful themes, and dumbed them down just to make it easier for newbies to use, rather than making it for people who know the basics, and are looking to explore the set's themes.
The 3 tiered deck system should be like this.
Decks for people who have no idea how to play MTG, like I don't know, the core set theme decks in the past.
Decks for people who know the basics, but are looking to explore the sets, like the block expansion theme decks.
Decks for people who are looking to be competitive. Clash Packs and Event Decks.
With the 2 block per year system, WOTC should adopt this 3 tiered deck system for their precons, considering they are going to make a beginners set every year because of no more core sets.
Why can't we get the decks of old? Remember the Vampire deck a couple years ago? Bloodghast, a single Verdant Catacombs and a full set of Dismember if I remember right. That deck was pretty solid, easy to pick up, and fun to play. I see no reason we can't go back to decks like that.

These decks of old were sold for $10 to $20 over MSRP. Examples include Vampire Onslaught, Hold the Line, Repeat Performance, Creep and Conquer, Rally and Rout.
WOTC has to find a way to filter out the intended audience and the people that already have decks who want the value cards.
1. Don't put in any value cards
2. Make the deck decent, and to people who already have decks and are experts, the deck would appear to suck
That way, most people in this message board wouldn't buy this deck, because WOTC probably doesn't design these for people to win most of their games as is.
I mentioned long ago the event deck as a failed idea, and how the precon for competitive players for a fair price won't work. It either is competitive enough for FNM, but stores would sell it $10 to $20 over MSRP. To remotely be $25 MSRP, the deck would have to be toned down a bit, and when that happens, the deck usually couldn't beat other FNM decks. WOTC probably knows that the idea of event decks isn't really working, but people still love them, so that is why it went from 8 initially per year, to 4, to 2, and now we have 2 clash packs per year as well.
The smart shopper doesn't buy form the LGS when it coems to event decks, they go to Walmart and pick them up for MSRP. The LGS's that do sell them at MSRP will see an increase in buyers, as they aren't trying to gouge their player base, they just have to make sure they aren't buying a lot of cards that can be pulled from the deck. My local LGS sold their boxes of modern masters at MSRP and sold out in under two hours. They said it was the best day of sales they have ever had, and they had players coming from over an hour away just because they weren't spiking the price. It can be done.

...except that event decks are LGS exclusive, and that not all stores are like your store.

I've seen my Wal-Mart carry an event deck on occasion, although they seem to choose the ones that are really bad, like Born of the Gods event deck. The clash pack sold much better, because it wasn't horrible like the one I mentioned and this one.
So, since the reaction here is literally the same cynical attitude given to every one of it's predecessors, I'll take it that this means this deck is actually good for it's target audience and not that bad off
it made me sad. I WISH I could play standard, but right now I just dont have the money. And by playing standard I really mean FNM. Where I live there is only 2 LGS in a 100km radius, so that the people attending to theses event are all spikes with 200+ dollar decks.

No, even with the other event decks there were defenders of it mixed in the thread. This one has NO defenders, because this is the WORST event deck Wizards has ever put out. It is below value, not competitive, and would cost significantly to upgrade it into competitiveness. This deck fails on all fronts and will sit in LGS display cases and WotC's warehouses for eternity.
I think what they might have been going for by making it two colors was to let the player customize it into one of two clans. Not saying that was a good call or not, but that was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the list.
You don't want to buy it for the value in cards, but if you're a new player and you want to purchase a preconstructed deck that can give you a chance at FNM, this will do fine
I got this event deck so I could play some Standard occasionally. With some help, and about 30 more dollars made it a lot better. Had to ditch about half of the deck. Didnt even mess with the side board. Went with the warrior theme. It was a decent starter idea for someone that has not played since Saviors of kamaigawai.
They leaned a bit heavily on the side of "make sure the deck has room to grow", but that's not a *huge* issue. I think I would switch out the dictates for something else, and up the Chieftain count because they're kind of what sells the deck theme, but you can see what the deck's going for, and it's an alright starting point for that. You won't be winning an FNM with this anytime soon, but you can at least be in a position to have fun (though again, it is undertuned for what I think they want).
This is probably the worst one I've ever seen. Usually the point is to be able to grab it and have something moderately playable at an FNM level right? I don't see this deck doing much of anything =/
Awful deck and doesn't even add up to the MSRP. What's really disappointing is it doesn't even seem functional. I think there should at least be a playset of both Cheifs - they obviously built it around the chiefs but there's not even a full playset of them or at least a 3 of each. Herald of Anafenza is not even a warrior on top of being a slow, bad card.
The main issue I have is it would not kill them to take out Oreskos Swiftclaw and put in Ajani's Pridemate instead - Ajani is a warrior so he feeds off the Cheif theme, on top of the life you gain from Seeker of the Way. It would also not kill them to throw in a Hopeful Eidolon to help Tormented Hero's heroic trigger and help Ajani's triggers (the Scoured Barrens also trigger Ajani, which baffles me why they wouldn't include him). There's also a lot of anthems which would work with Underworld Coinsmith and wala - no rares added but very easy cards to include to at least make the deck FUNCTIONAL. This seems like half constructed then half random. If they can't add in an extra $5 rare (which would have satiated people) then at least make the deck make sense in and out.
And the black rares from the theros block do not fit at all. IMO event decks should be BLOCK CONSTRUCTED. A year from now no one will want to buy this from a store once the Theros cards are ready to rotate out. And it's unexciting to buy an event deck seeing a long list of cards from the previous year that you already have multiple copies of the rares and of course the commoners. Commons/uncommons from the year old Theros do not excite players buying this since they've probably opened over a box's worth of product in the past year HOWEVER, even though they're uncommons/commons - if they ALL WERE FROM KHANS then it would be a nice saving grace to at least have full playsets of cards in the current set.
Hypothetically speaking - if they made a new Khans event deck with only KTK cards (no theros) and let's say it only had a few rares that are just UNDER the MSRP - wouldn't it still be decent if it also had a full playset of the tri color lands, of Seeker of the Way, Monastery Swiftspear, Treasure Cruise, War-Name aspirant etc.
