The banners have the worst batch of flavor text I've seen in a long time. "Cruelty to rule"? Seriously? Who aside from the most bland, stereotypical, evil-laughter villain would ever believe in something like that?
Actually, Niccolo Machiavelli, one of the most influential political philosophers of all time, did. He wrote very intelligently about the subject in his most famous book, The Prince. What he wrote makes a LOT of sense and you should go read it.
The lich-lord is still bad.
Except Machiavelli actually didn't believe what he wrote in that book. He supported republican government (he was an important figure in the Republic of Florence before the Medici returned to power). He just wrote that to show the Medici that he supported them (even though he really didn't). And even in that book he says that the leader should rule for the sake of the people. So the flavor text is still bad.
I predicted that there would be mana-generating artifacts in this set, and I see that I was correct! I am displeased that they completely outclass the Alara obelisks, but, perhaps if WotC ever revisits that plane and its colors, they shall print obelisks with card-drawing abilities.
Of course they outclass the Alara Obeslisks. THe Obeslisks have been outclassed time and time again (Manalith, Darksteel Ingot, Chromatic Lantern). They never should have been so weak to begin with.
Abyssal Persecutor 2.0 or whole set is trash. You heard it from me first, ladies and germs.
Not sure what you're saying. A 5/4 flyer for 4 is bad? And there's no downside like Abyssal Persecutor. Those are decent base stats to begin with and then add Haste, which means it smacks you for 5 immediately, Lifelink which means you'll win the race, and Vigilance which means it can help take over a board state. Without the potential Haste this wouldn't be that good, but with Haste it's definitely good enough for Constructed play. This is less of a midrange card and more of a curve-topper for aggro, exactly like Falkenrath Aristocrat was (and probably why folks are referencing that card). Midrange doesn't have all the dudes that become useless in the late game like aggro does. Sacrificing a 2/1 is all good and fine by the time you play this.
... I was being sarcastic. I know, I know, text over the Net doesn't convey sarcasm very well. The Demon is a perfectly good card by any metric.
Love the cycle of Obelisks 2.0. It's been said, and I will say it again, These + common land cycle will make drafting Kahns fun. Sealed will be interesting.
Looking forward to it.
The Butcher, damn I want to crack you open on the pre-release...
msun: Knives scoop ice cream.
Highroller: No they don't, knives don't scoop. Spoons scoop.
msun: Well, knives SHOULD scoop icecream.
Highroller: We have spoons that do it. Moreover, the shape of a knife that would scoop ice cream would make it horrible for performing the functions of a knife.
msun: Highroller, you bring up spoons as though they were the utensil used for scooping ice cream.
At the beginning of your upkeep, you may put the top card of your library into your graveyard. If it was a non-creature card, draw a card. If it was a creature card, put it onto the battlefield instead. It gains flying, trample and haste. Sacrifice it at the beginning of your next end step. (The upkeep happens before the draw step)
and then how am i going to put them back in the yard in there original order? Just seems like a lot of work each time.
Why would you want to put them back in the original order? (modern) Magic rules do not care about the order of the cards in the yard, you can always shuffle your graveyard as much as you wish
Why isn't this Butcher a mythic. I really hate that they print all the unplayable commander stuff at mythic and then this at rare. I mean how are you supposed to beat that card in limited?

For the most part you won't have to. It's not exactly like he's a common, not every single pack opened in limited is going to have a butcher lurking inside it. In fact if I remember correctly when the mythic rarity was first introduced it was supposed to be ONLY unplayable commander stuff and the occasional big splashy cool thing. The reasoning being, that way meant that there were these occasional mythic rare treats you could open and be excited about, but for the most part the really powerful format defining cards would be at rare so you didn't have to bankrupt yourself to keep your deck relevant.
Butcher seems like a format defining card. He doesn't even need his own deck. The random 2/1s and Cat Soldier tokens you were beating face with on turns 1-3 won't be any good on turn 4 anyway, so the ability to make a Lava Axe with them seems Hellrider esque.

What would be wrong with them being tier 1 in Standard? After all, Standard did just fine when Junk Reanimator was a top deck in INN-RTR Standard.
Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
