butcher is gross, as if rabblemaster wasn't good enough already. the sultai guy on the other hand... interesting design, but badly overcosted by at least 2 mana. doesn' look very good for sultai, maybe I'll hop on the mardu train and ride it to victory.
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.
Geeze, these are lazy design. Oh wow, a b/g/u card that gets haste, trample or flying. And then a r/w/b card that gets vigilance, lifelink, and haste. This whole set just seems paint by the numbers.
Such lazy designs, using game mechanics that exist to create wedge cards that are actually wedge cards.

Everyone knows that good luck and good game are such insincere terms that any man who does not connect his right hook with the offender's jaw on the very utterance of such a phrase is no man I would consider as such.
wow banners are cool, didnt expect obelisks, let alone upgraded obelisks! awesome
demon is a house, and dat art! truly frightening. like he is literally coming over to butcher you and your family

The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost. The true heart can tough the poison of hatred without being harmed. Since beginning-less time, darkness thrives in the void but always yields to purifying light.
I invision a future where one is not mighty when he can silence a crowd with brutality,
but when he leaves them speechless with wisdom.
It seems bug ate something rotten. How slow the limited should be for this to be successful? Especially in comparison to what Mardu is getting AND taking into account "power mad bullies" flavor? Why UB = auto villain?
YES!!! Now that butcher is what I'd call a sick card! The options there are soooo enticing! Also I just love sac effects/ resource management in general!
Sultai guy is pretty bad but whatever there are always some janky rares in every set.
EDIT: I don't really think Butcher should be compared to Falkenrath Aristocrat. That card could defend itself from most types of removal which is REALLY significant. That being said I still love the butcher!!

Lich Lord feels a tad overcosted, but I'm sure someone will find a way to have fun with it in casual (Thinking about Conjurer's Closet, but Whip of Erebos is still better).
Demon on the other hand is neat, I think the white makes sense with it gaining vigilance and such. But alas I feel Falkenrath Aristocrat was simply better; this guy will die to removal like everyone else and sacrificing a guy for haste before it gets killed seems like a bad two-for-one to me. Although his base stats seem aggressive enough that a midrange deck might use him for just that alone and the sacrificing ability will be icing on the cake. He also dodges bile blight and anger of gods so I could actually see decks running him to take advantage of that in standard.
I approve of both! They're cool cards and great art as always
The sultai guy is definetely not at his place here and that is bad for sultai, the clan needed its 3drop. Also, although the logical dissynergy between him and delve, he is not really at home in sultai, reanimation effects being abzan colors traditionally. The card looks like a cycled random bad design for a commander set.
While I agree that he isn't too good, he actually does have synergy with delve. You exile all the creatures you don't want and "random creature" becomes a lot less random.
Edit: oh, looks like people already got to it before me.
R.I.P. Master of the Feast. And to think, things were looking so bright for you come rotation.
Anyways, that demon is neat.
Also, it's kind of hilarious how leery WotC are about pushing Sultai/delve too far. It's not even like they're subtly nerfing these cards. It's just blatantly obvious that they're terrified of what graveyard shenanigans might do.
Abyssal Persecutor 2.0 or whole set is trash. You heard it from me first, ladies and germs.
Not sure what you're saying. A 5/4 flyer for 4 is bad? And there's no downside like Abyssal Persecutor. Those are decent base stats to begin with and then add Haste, which means it smacks you for 5 immediately, Lifelink which means you'll win the race, and Vigilance which means it can help take over a board state. Without the potential Haste this wouldn't be that good, but with Haste it's definitely good enough for Constructed play. This is less of a midrange card and more of a curve-topper for aggro, exactly like Falkenrath Aristocrat was (and probably why folks are referencing that card). Midrange doesn't have all the dudes that become useless in the late game like aggro does. Sacrificing a 2/1 is all good and fine by the time you play this.

So I typed the keywords from Butcher into Gatherer and the only card that comes up is Cairn Wanderer. The fact that you can give them for just a sacrifice is pretty crazy. Mardu currently has some excellent token generators that curve into this. Mardu currently looks terrifying.
Yep.
At this point, I've all but given up on trying to make my deck work post-rotation.
Mardu is also my least favorite Wedge, so I may be taking a break for a while.

Sedris, the Traitor King just shed a tear. If you know how to manipulate your graveyard this outclasses Unearth no doubt. I love this Lich Lord, but I don't use these colors. I use UBR
See, this is how I KNOW I'm still bad at magic. Even though I know powerful cards like Falkenrath Aristocrat exist and that sacrificing chumps as a cost doesn't always have to be that much of a downside, my first thoughts before seeing everyone else's reaction to the butcher was "Aw man really? Nothing but flying unless you sac a guy? Lame."
The banners have the worst batch of flavor text I've seen in a long time. "Cruelty to rule"? Seriously? Who aside from the most bland, stereotypical, evil-laughter villain would ever believe in something like that?
Actually, Niccolo Machiavelli, one of the most influential political philosophers of all time, did. He wrote very intelligently about the subject in his most famous book, The Prince. What he wrote makes a LOT of sense and you should go read it.

I wouldn't exactly say that all of what he said made a lot of sense, but yes, "cruelty to rule" actually sounds believable, albeit, sort of cheesy. A lot of flavor text is cheesy though, so it doesn't bother me much.

Not to get too far off track, but there are a great many scholars who attribute The Prince as being a satirical work, ridiculing Monarchist rulers by pointing out how the qualities required of a Monarch are truly absurd and not at all desirable. His other writings, after all, were far more sympathetic towards republican ideals. Not to mention he may have had other intentions involving deceiving local monarchs, but that's neither here nor there.
In other words, it's entirely likely and probable that Machiavelli did not write The Prince to be taken at face value as a guide for ruling. He wasn't a monarchist, instead a very staunch republican. It's a very shallow reading indeed to think The Prince is a guide to leadership, and less an exposition on the nature of Monarchist rule. It's almost akin to thinking that A Modest Proposal by Jonathon Swift actually supports butchering Irish babies for meat and leather. It's a very transparent reading of the book, and one which completely ignores the political and historical context of its writing.

I dunno, I think we're getting short on rare slots for that.
