Pretty cool card as well, I think it'll be interesting to see how relevant the regenerate clause will become as there is no good removal with with the anti-regenerate clause on it. I suppose it's too bad we always have Exile available to us now, otherwise I would think this is pretty good; available ramp will dictate it's power.
Arguably worse than Putrid Leech, yet two rarities higher? I guess they were trying to make the Lotleth Troll of this Standard but it's not even close to that level of power.
I'm calling it right now- worst rare in the set. Even good limited players will find better bombs at common and uncommon no sweat. Worst. Episode. Ever.
I really do predict this to be our worst rare in set award winner. I'd be happier opening a jar of eyeballs, so I think anything worse is highly unlikely. This card wont just have zero constructed potential, but not be significantly better than a mass of ghouls in a draft.
Anyone who thinks this should be anything but rare is crazy.
a 2/2 for 2 is fine as is. Give it an unlimited +2/+2 for 2 pump and a cheep regenerate and you're looking at a constructed worthy card and a limited bomb. This thing is great, and NEVER underestimate a mana sink in limited. This card is seriously scary.
Nice card, a BG shade with bear stats which requires double pumping each time and has a 2cc regeneration ability. While I do wish that the regeneration had only costed one (maybe 1 hybrid mana) the simple fact that this can threaten to beat up Courser will probably ensure a place for it in standard.
Reminds me of Savage Knucklebade. This, too, could theoretically fit in any type of deck (aggro, midrange, or control) and could work at any point in the game (early, mid, or late). Not to say that it will fit in any of those, but versatility is great if you like brewing.

comparable to nantuko shade. which is to say, i'm not that excited.
I was thinking the same thing, except for the unexcited part. Shade was always pretty good. I don't know that this will have as much impact as shade did, but it still seems like a nice creature.
Aggro decks don't want to be pouring mana into a 2/2 just to keep it alive, or to make it a semi threat. Cards like Voice of Resurgence and Putrid Leech kept the pressure on without having to invest mana or lose tempo. Mid-range decks have better choices. Control wants no part of it.
On top of that, Abzan and Sultai will probably have better options overall.
(I wonder if I'm going to end up in somebody's signature months from now when this card is tearing up the scene and going for $15+)

Just going to say that while aggro decks would possibly prefer putting another threat on the board rather then pumping up a creature, the flexibility for this to be a threat mid game or to survive removal or wrath effects would fit in with a slower meta in general and a slower aggro play style specifically.

That's fair.
Honestly, I've lost touch with Standard, and I don't know what's good or not anymore.

In most games Lotleth Troll never became a huge threat, I mean most people weren't all gung ho about giving every creature card to Lotleth unless they had graveyard shenanigans ready to go.
The threat of activation with this card is very good I mean attacking with access to 2 green and 2 black can be really annoying to an opponent. I wouldn't count this card out quite yet, it may seem a bit clunky but at least it starts as a 2/2 for 2 mana.
You probably meant "expensive regenerate". Aside from Duty-Bound Dead, not many creatures in recent years have cost as much as Rakshasa Deathdealer to regenerate.
Guys you are missing the point. Treacherous Pit-Dweller is the only other 2cmc Demon in Magic and has a massive downside. This is also the first ever Green demon.
Oh great. Yet another above-the-curve weenie thrown up to rare without cause.
cough, cough, lotleth troll, soldier of the pantheon, etc.
Champion of the Parish had to be rare because it was absurd in limited, this card does not have that excuse.
While I don't think this card is all that good, I do think that it'll be bonkers in limited and that's why they bumped it up to rare. I'm not happy about it, but I think limited is the only format where this card will actually shine.
I don't think it fails the Mahamoti Djinn test (cards with a Limited power level equal to or exceeding Mahamoti's cannot be uncommon or common). Heck, I'm not sure it fails the Dark Banishing test (cards better in Limited than Dark Banishing cannot be common).
Champion, OTOH, was an insane card turn 1 in the right Limited deck and was a windmill slam first pick. I think this Rakshasa is a solid first to third pick.
Another uncommon at rare. This literally should have been putrid leech with the regen clause. Get it together wizards.
When most of the time you post (well, 5 of the last 9 skimming back) are complaining that rares should be uncommons, maybe that's a sign it's not them, it's you.
Uh Lotleth Troll saw a decent amount of play, can't really say anything about Nantuko Shade I didn't pay any attention to tournaments when it was standard, and Truefire Paladin only protected itself in combat, Rakshasa Deathdealer can protect itself from burn (either ability, more likely the second), removal (and by extension wrath effects), combat (again either ability), and can potentially kill any non-evasive, average creature (here meaning without indestructible, regenerate, and other like abilities).
It's pretty decent, I don't think it will be Voice of Resurgence or Courser of Kruphix level of play, but I'm sure it will be played at least as much as say Loxodon Smiter or Boon Satyr. It might fall off some when Fate comes out or maybe there will be some other card that in the set that will some way ruin it, but it's much better then you are giving it credit.
Edit: Hrrm, my quotes broke for some reason. Fixed now.
Yikes. Cool name, funny creature type, and lots of disappointment. I agree that it could have been printed as an uncommon and no one would have cared much. I would really expect some kind of 'dies' trigger or anything to tie the card with the name.

For a while, I was defending all of these NWO "uncommon design + rare symbol" cards, because they were secretly good.
This is unsecretly bad. Putrid Leech defecates all over this thing.
So far, KTK is presenting itself as a heady mix of Alara block's uninspiring set structure, Kamigawa block's shoot-yourself-in-the-foot power level, and fetchlands.

But I mostly love that art.

I love Golgari to death, always have and always will, but this card sucks. Dumb creature types too.
You're having flashbacks from 2005. This is 2014, where 3/3s for 2 (like Fleecemane Lion) struggle to see any see play.
