I bet you pine for the days of mana burn too. All in all this set looks better than theros (thank god) so I'm pleased
Well what do you know, despite your sarcastic tone I indeed want mana burn back. I don't like any change that makes MTG simpler, but on the other hand I know this is to appeal to new players and only chance at MTG's survival, so I'm fine with it (somehow).
Why is it any better than Theros up to now? Cards are hard to cast, expensive and a lot of them are rare where you would think they should be printed at uncommon. The only powerful card so far is that goblin who grants deathtouch and first strike. Everything else was meh.
The mechanics are less limiting such as delve and morph, and you can see just from sultai charm that we're gonna see a similar power level there to the rtr charms which were fantastic. If you don't think the azban and mardu ascendancies are powerful, I don't know what to tell you. They do everything good cards should do.
Most importantly, it doesn't look like the set is all huge push monsters like theros was which I like. Were seeing good NON CREATURE cards for once.
And for the record I played while damage on the stack and mana burn were still things. They were stupid, and good riddance. There are changes that are dumbing down like NWO IMO, and then there are changes that are just eliminating stupid corner cases that really made no sense (mana burn, legend rule, and damage on the stack). But that's for another topic.
Point is, from what we've seen so far there's reason for optimism for modern playables. Legacy playables are just too much to hope for IMO.
The global enchantments keep coming and coming... WhyTF were these not in bloody Theros, the so-friggen-called 'enchantment block'. Maro is just plain dumb sometimes.

MTG Junky... First packs being a starter of each 4th Edition and Ice Age. Good Grief, I've been playing since 1995? Where does the time go!

this is mtgs, where occam's razor is so blunt it can't cut jello any more.
Well Wizards said they will be toning down the power level of cards through next few blocks, so I guess they are starting here.
I have been playing for more than 15 years now and I don't like how much dumber Wizards madee this game from removing damage on stack until now. But I feel even more dumber because I'm still playing it. I guess I will quit when Magic will become next Yu-Gi-Oh.
/end offtopic rant
Considering Yu-Gi-Oh has an extremely high power level, has very quick games, and isn't "dumbed down", I don't think you'll be quitting anytime soon.
If anything, Magic is going in the opposite direction of Yugioh. If you were REALLY going to quit when Magic becomes Yugioh, you'd be quitting if Khans was full of Modern and Legacy playable cards.
Kind of the complete opposite of your complaint there, isn't it.

You do know that he has admitted that WotC (MaRo isn't the only one who works on Magic!) Sort of flubbed the enchantment theme for Theros right?
For those making the comparison to Bident of Thassa keep in mind that this card is not legendary so you can get value out of redundant copies and not vulnerable to artifact hate (not that that's a big deal in the grand scheme of thing). It would hardly be broken w/o the creature type restriction, but it would be a much better card.
So does dark confidant your point being? Life is a resource, use it. And the fact is losing life is likely irrelevant when the deck playing this is the aggro deck, not control. Aggro doesn't care about its life total nearly as much as control.

As someone who has played Yu-Gi-Oh since he was a kid, this is exactly true. Yu-Gi-Oh's problems are the fact they got too high of a power level, did not cut down on complexity and some other things (They don't have a solid limiter like mana to cost cards with for example).
As for the card...eh. Kinda lame it is Warriors only.
This set is going to be the worst set ever. now, I know why we have fetch lands in this set

Wizards is toning down the power so the game doesn't become YGO. That game is a mess right now, with an overpowered archtype released every set, then banned into submission when the next group comes out. Spellbooks made me give up on that game entirely.

"I hope to have such a death... lying in triumph atop the broken bodies of those who slew me..."
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.

Worst ever LOL. Clearly you never cracked Fallen Empire or Prophecy. Can't get over how much crying their is about this set from some people. If you don't like this solid set just quit and go away.
Got excited until I saw the limit to Warriors. Would it it have been so hard to make this a black Bident of Thassa with the life payment limitation?
Without the warrior limit, this would almost certainly be better than Bident, don't you think? You get to deal extra damage in exchange for the life payment, which is what an aggro deck wants to do.

At uncommon, probably yes. Bident is a rare with card draw and a sometimes useful ability. If this didn't have the restriction, I'd say it would be better than Bident, since it is easier to cast and has a typically more relevant extra-effect, and therefore should be at rare. Since it is an uncommon slot, I'm perfectly happy with the build-around. Besides, I imagine that this set of all sets would have plenty of warriors to go with it.

I know that, but the lifeloss counteracts the +1/+0 when playing against non-control decks. So this would really just be an easier to splash Coastal Piracy if it was for all creatures, though admittedly the +1/+0 would be better despite the lifeloss a lot of the time. But even if it was slightly better than Bident, would it be too good? And do we really deserve to get this trash instead?
Called it in M15. With Boomweaver Giant being a monk for no real reason it was safe to assume Khans would have some kind of class support. A lot of unexplored design space there and I'm glad to see it in this card. Here's hoping we see more of this throughout the block. Sweet card. I think this could be quite good. Sleeper for sure.

Black isn't supposed to get card draw equal to blue. At rare, blue gets "If you hit with a creature, draw a card", why would black get that at uncommon? The life loss by itself would only make this acceptable as a black rare.
Too bad mutavault is rotating out? Not really I won't miss mutavault in standard. Card is insane.
Typically trading 1 life of yours for one of your opponents life is worth it. That's what this does but you also draw a card. It is a may as well/you don't have to draw the card and lose a life. The anthem effect is also not to be underestimated as black rarely gets anthems despite it just being power I'll take that. If this was all creatures it would be constructed playable but as it stands we have to wait and see what warriors there are.

If you consider the fact that Underworld Connections can't be used until turn 4 at the earliest, this card can technically be the same thing (card advantage turn 4). If you can play enough cheap warriors, then turn 4 drop this and attack and deal damage then you can get cards. It certainly isn't the same as Underworld Connections but for an uncommon it is a decent replica.
Well so far in the set we have:
Mardu Skullhunter
Heir of the Wilds (Pretty Relevant becuase 3/2 or 4/3 deathtouch, depending on your field can cnnect quite often.)
Abzan Guide
Zurgo Helmsmasher (Relevant as most warrior may end up being in Mardu)
As possible users of this card's draw effect, we still get to see which other Warriors we will have aviable.
