Bolas created Ugin for some reason, or they were once both the same being and were split into two characters for some reason that is yet to be known.
Wait, so like how King Slug is actually just the other half of Super Kami Guru? Is Bolas the good one then?
I have no idea what you're talking about, but yeah, that's kind of what I had imagined. Ugin being Bolas' good half. Yin and yang and all of that. It's a pretty classic trope, I suppose.
I'll just guess from now one that there are two species of dragon, serpent-like pseudo-bipedal geniuses (Bolas, Ugin, Oros etc, Crosis etc, Innistradi, Niv) and chimerical dragons that forgot how to dragon and became timmy fodder.
The similarity of the art style is definitely meant to evoke a connection to Nicol Bolas, to indicate that they're part of the same "cycle" of sorts. What his connection is to the Elder Dragons is, we can only speculate. Maybe he's the ghost of Arcades Sabboth with the modernized art style. His wings do bear at least a stylistic resemblance (the angelic look) to those of Treva, the Renewer, possibly suggestion that this style of wings is characteristic of Dominarian Bant-colored dragons.
Or I could be dead wrong. That's the joy of speculation.
Bolas is from Dominaria. We dont really know where Ugin is from. All the other elders are now dead, but I believe that info comes from Bolas himself... Weird to think that Bolas' opposite would be from another plane of existence and not be an elder dragon, but I suppose its possible.
Maybe not LITERALLY opposites, just thematically and somewhat figuratively. or something...?
The simple truth is that we just dont know enough about Ugin, but at least now we finally have a good idea of how he looks (pretty BA imo).
Also, if they were equal in strength, how did Bolas murder him so hard that he has to resort to time travel shenanigans lol just saying guys...

I registered to post in this thread. Ugin is my favorite MTG character. That art is amazing.
Bolas isn't from Dominaria, he's from Dominia, which was the old name for the Multiverse before they changed it because people were getting it confued with Dominaria. His birthplace is unknown. Bolas and his siblings might've been the only story relevant Elder Dragons at the time, but it's possible more survived. I believe Ugin is an elder dragon, hence the resemblance to Bolas.
Source: MTG Salvation WIKI: "The Elder Dragons were ancient dragons of Dominia. Their vast power rivaled that of planeswalkers. The chronologically oldest bit of Magic lore we have is that about the Elder Dragon Wars, a conflict that shook the planes and killed most of their kind. The winners of the war became the ancestors of all dragons and drakes, while the losers were stripped of their wings, limbs and most of their power and became the Elder Land Wurms, which spawned all other wurm species. Viashino are also descendants of them, although it is unknown how.
There is some debate about how many Elder Dragons actually survived. We know for sure that the siblings Nicol Bolas, Chromium Rhuell, Arcades Sabboth, Palladia-Mors, and their cousin Vaevictis Asmadi survived, but were there any others? Some prerevisionist lore says there were none, and that Piru was a Lesser Elder, but it seems unlikely that a race as powerful as the dragons could arise from five close relatives. It could be that the five Elder Dragon Legends were simply the most prominent of the survivors. Presently, Nicol Bolas is the only known Elder Dragon that still lives and is the most powerful of the Elder Dragons. "
What if the reason that Ghostfire was colorless was because Ugin was dead? Therefore Ugin still is red of some sort but his magic was being driven through the spirit world making it colorless at the time. If we get an Ugin Planeswalker it will be during the "go back in time" set for Khans where he is fully alive and in the flesh. His artwork is similar to Bolas for good reason. WOTC wants Ugin to feel like an equal to Bolas, and his "Big Good Guy" roll would fill out nicely. Equal to bolas intelligence (blue), and power (red), but his opposite in motive (black for Bolas).
Using all of this information, I would say that Ugin could possibly be a W/R/U Planeswalker to be our new awesome behind the scenes good guy counter to Bolas.

Bring back Transmute as a U/B mechanic and take your mill back to the depths of hell where it came from!
He could be a Elder Dragon as well... there is no confirmation either.
The sad thing about the elder dragons is that their artwork would be diferent today( Just look at old bolas art and new bolas art...) maybe Chromium would be equal or just a litle more humanoid , but all the others looks like generic dragons... ( Maybe the elder dragons are just like Ugin and Bolas (more humanoids))

WOW! you guys just blew my mind. Dominia, who knew! I have seriously read that elder dragon page and Bolas page a couple times over, and I never realized this. Thanks alot
it makes Bola's flavor text deceiving though, calling him Dominaria's oldest evil. oh well, I guess that makes me a little more open to the idea of Ugin being an older dragon

Is it just me or do all sentient dragon planeswalkers look the same? /mtgracist.
Maybe Bolas and Ugin are brothers. New brothers' war?
Maybe Ugin's P/T is equal to the number of other dragons you control and when the Khans wiped them out (perhaps as a part of Bolas' evil genius plan) he died as part of a state-based effect.
Maybe Bolas created Ugin as a helpful clone of himself (thus the resemblance) and when Ugin developed ideas of his own, Bolas put him down.
Maybe the art direction chosen for Ugin is meant only to be reminiscent of Bolas to remind the playerbase that Bolas is still around and something to worry about. (Most likely because Bolas will reenter the storyline soon)
Maybe Ugin was Bolas' stunt double in MTG: the Movie and tragically died on set during one of the stunts. Producer Sarkhan Vol travels back in time to save the franchise.
Maybe when a planeswalker spark ignites in a dragon, it effects their spines and gives them a perfect size-two waistline.
Or it could all be a coincidence and people's minds tend to group things together as alike for easier processing of information.

I actually think this is a pretty common misread as I only learned this the other day rereading the article.
The old Elder Dragons really need new art commissioned.
If they all look like Snake Lizard Frog Yoda dragons, then we'll know Ugin is an Elder Dragon.
If they don't, well then we know shenanigans are going on, and at the very least we'll all have an awesome new art for Arcades Sabboth
Maybe Bolas and Ugin are brothers. New brothers' war?
Ugin confirmed as Urza, Bolas confirmed as Mishra (well... they're both Grixis)
So, Ugin an Bolas are different enough so you can tell who is each one.
But they're similar enough so you can assume they have somehow related
Maybe brothers or cousins. But even if not blood related, the're linked by the story. Both are really old dragons (like.. REALLY OLD) with the aiblity to planeswalk.
In case anyone is confused by this, the original text said:
Travel back in time to a war-torn Tarkir where five clans clash with the mighty dragons of the past. The Planeswalker Sarkhan Vol has arrived just in time to save Ugin, the Spirit Dragon. The choices made now will decide the fate of Tarkir.
They recently removed the Ugin line, which likely means it was an accident to spoil it so soon.
Pet theory: the time travel aspect of the set is Sarkan goes back in time and permanently becomes a dragon, ala his +1, and turns out to actually be ugin.
Well, so does Bolas.
