Maybe this whole ''omg waste of a rare slot'' is something wizards just doesn't buy into, which I'm glad of. So they can't make cards like this because rares always have to be superpowerful?
Its not a question of power level, frankly something I've never given two hoots about, its a question of the design
There really isn't anything mechanically interesting going on with this card that wouldn't be suitable for an uncommon, maybe even a common if the power was toned down. But when rare slots are taken up by vanilla or french vanilla garbage, it means that we are getting that many less cards that push the envelope and do something cool and unique, because if wizards had such designs, they'd be at rare.
This could be cloak and dagger or diviner's wand or obsidian battle-axe. Its a tribal equipment for morph/artifact/eldrazi/land creatures, and it has less abilities on it than any of those three uncommons I just listed, that give shroud, flying/draw and haste respectively. This is a vanilla +2/+2 equipment
quite powerful with colorless creatures. Limited staple I think.
I'm not quite sure if you know what a staple means in limited. It certainly isn't a rare/mythic.
And c'mon wizards. This is a freaking uncommon. Looks like the pattern's not changing. With cards like these, Ktk's power level will be similar to Theros.
Looks like a prime uncommon to me. If they're pushing clans for sealed/limited I don't know how you couldn't just make this uncommon and put in a little artifact hate.
What is going on in the art? Is he cutting his own hand? It's rather confusing.
I was thinking the same. The art just looks stupid. Why can't the guy just cut some other guy or at least some object that isn't a part of his own body?
Whatever, it's nice that you can make your morphs "bolt-proof" with this. As for the rarity ... it does indeed seem misplaced at rare. Sometimes I think Wizards worries just a bit too much about their precious limited format. This certainly wouldn't have been a total gamebreaker at uncommon.
The most interesting thing about it is "will the colorless theme be developed further?". Otherwise pretty powerful limited stuff which might be quite annoying as uncommon.
Trinket Mage now has an offensive purpose? Sign me up. lol I have always wanted to search up an equipment that had a solid p/t boost for 1 mana that wasnt copper carapace cause, you know, creatures like to block too

Decks I have in my bag of tricks- Needless to say, someone who wants to play will probably have a deck UB/x Faeries UR Storm XURWB Affinity G Elves UW control
This is crazy powerful in limited, I imagine drafting this and get around 8 morph creatures, swinging for 4 on turn 4 is no joke in a limited environment, not to mention the flavor of the card absolutely deserves a rare slot.
Yeah, this feels like a future set plant to me, similar to Eldrazi Monument / Steel Overseer. Sure, it works even in the current environment, but things might get even more interesting very soon. And, since we don't draft set 3 with KTK, I believe we're going to see a colorless theme as soon as FRF. Ancient dragon magic turning creatures into colorless blobs of fire, time travel to the past where this magic is not quite so ancient, etc. etc.
Maybe it's not common or uncommon because those rarities are already properly filled? Or maybe they don't want you to open this in every other pack? There are a lot of possibilities why this isn't suited for anything below rare.

I'm betting that one of the main mechanics of whichever set Ugin is in is going to revolve around colorless spells, and spells with a colored cost that are colorless (like Ghostfire).
This thing is insanely underwhelming. Should've been pushed further for sure. Hell they could've stapled Dream Chisel to it or something too.
Terrible card evaluation.
The cost efficiency of this card is great for colorless creatures. Not every rare has to be eternal format quality playable good. Though this card would be pretty good in Modern-Affinity.
And also pretty good with any Trinket Mage decks as another bullet.
Adventuring Gear and Bonesplitter were both common. Gear could be used as a combat trick, or double buff with fetches reprinted. Bonesplitter give 2 power for the same cost. I fail to see how adding 2 toughness increases a bonesplitter(which is the best case scenario) to a rare. Say you don't have a colorless creature? This thing is not strong.

It's an attempt to make up for the horrible value that is a 2/2 vanilla morph creature for 3 mana. A 4/4 for 5 mana and two cards isn't that good, even if the blade is reusable, but if you're going to build a morph deck anyway for some reason, why not?
But it sure would be a disappointing rare to pull. Looks like an uncommon to me.

I think this card is perfectly fine as a rare. It's fairly powerful in the decks that want to use it, and it is not a terrible card even without colorless creatures. I can see why a card like this may have been uncommon, but was boosted to rare for Limited reasons. Wizards has been careful with equipments at low rarities ever since Mirrodin. Remember, Bonesplitter and Vulshock Morningstar were originally commons, and Loxodon Warhammer was an uncommon, and they warped their respective limited formats.
The fact that it is a colorless support card in a multicolor block, but it is still potent in Limited because of Morph is sheer brilliance.
It could be that they put this as a rare partly also for story/flavour-reasons, being a reference to Ugin and all that. And the colourless magic being something ancient and old and rare...
dunno. I kinda would have thought it would be more clever to have something like this as uncommon, to help morph more in limited. As in, make it less warping if that was the case, but I'd rather have an equimpent that makes morph creatures more playable in limited actually show up and be a part of the game, than something that just shows up in the odd draft as a rare.
Bonesplitter would never be reprinted at common in a normal set (Masters was special). Adventuring Gear is significantly "hindered" by the landfall requirement (e.g. it does not work on defense).
Other than that, I agree that putting Ghostfire Blade at rare is a bit stupid. It should have been an uncommon.
I'm pretty sure they put it at rare for limited reasons. +2/+2 for 1 to play and 1 to equip on to all the morphs running around is really strong, and probably too strong for uncommon in that environment. That said, I really wish this wasn't rare. Rares should be for exciting or interesting designs, this is just boring. I think they could have pushed this harder at rare, or added a slightly more interesting effect.
Outside of limited it could be pretty useful for the UR artifact deck floating around.

Seems good, In limited i think i would 1st pick it and make a morph deck with some creatures on color and others just false treaths...
In constructed(Standard) it gives more power to that affinit deck ... play land + ornithopther + this , make orni a 2/4...
