And down, down, down goes the power level. At least they made it an instant.
I like it for standard, assuming we don't get better (cheaper) removal. It can probably be played somewhere along the lines of Silence the Believers and Sever the Bloodline. The exile may be more relevant than we realize, depending on the meta.

Currently playing:
Standard: I, for one, welcome our new rhinoceros overlords
Modern: Pod's dead, Bob's back.
Legacy: Lands, Deathblade, Death and Taxes, Elves, MUD
Retired Legacy: Merfolk, Goblins, Jund, Delver, Reanimator
I have been waiting for this card for years.
Honestly I was hoping it would cost 1WB instead of 2WB to compete with maelstrom pulse, but this is still fantastic.
I'm really liking the idea of dega control in standard right now.
Time to make some proxies....

If MTG is a part of your life, the formats are like relationships:
Standard/Block = The on-again, off-again holiday fling
Modern/Vintage/Legacy = Stable, homely. A ***** after absence/misreading
Limited/Sealed = Heart breaking free spirit
Commander/Cube = Agreeable, needy and expensive
Pauper/Peasant = Sweet, kind, practical, but shy and boring
Another gold card with no watermark, this time with Zurgo in the art and being quoted. So strange.
I have a feeling it is related to the wedge design that MARO keeps saying will all make sense once the whole set is out. The clans splintering or something like that.
Momir Vig, Simic Visionary
Melek, Izzet Paragon
Oona, Queen of the Fae
Bruna, Light of Alabaster
Gisela, Blade of Goldnight
Rhys the Redeemed
Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord
Sen Triplets
The Mimeoplasm WUBRGSliver OverlordGRBUW WUBRGSliver Hivelord(Superfriends)GRBUW
Zurgo seems like such an odd flavour choice here... We supposed to believe he has a magic sword or something? Although they're consistent in that it doesn't have a Mardu watermark (which would require red) I don't see why flavour shouldn't reflect it. I guess they don't see the Abzan doing this, and Sorin doesn't need more than one card as he's just passing through.
Why does everyone think this should have the functionality of a modern staple? This is an excellent two-of that deals with all but 2 threats (stormbreath, and that new blue-green 6/6 hexproof trampler). Sided out against aggro decks, late game you can't attack your opponent from an angle they can't answer. Seems like control gold. Banishing Light hit your current most overbearing threat, Udder End hit your threat that is or isn't on the creature axis, 5 mana boardwipe stabilize. This is the card control decks needed.

I too am baffled by the watermarks so far. I initially thought we wouldn't even see a WB card in Mardu (that Mardu would be exclusively RW and BR only to demonstrate its "red-heavy" status). Here we have one, and it's not clan-marked?
I'd like to see the rationale behind which cards get the watermarks and which don't.
And I for one enjoy seeing powerful old cards getting tweaked into a more reasonable power level. I like the exciting powerful cards of a set to be new ones (the same reason I didn't enjoy the return of Thoughtseize).

On MTGO as Protoman.
On 7/14/10, broke 1900 mark! <3 ROE.
Well I don't see BUG being control for this Standard like some people at my LGS think. I believe the best control deck available for Standard will be WB.

For standard, this will be great. I'm not sure for modern, though. Maybe in some kind of esper-control build it could see play in the sideboard, but it's probably not good enough. It really should have split second or something.
This card is tech, not staple. Control will still need a good piece of 2 mana creature removal to be viable (it will likely get just that, btw.)
Looking at the trend of Magic, they want Standard games ending with creatures or Planeswalkers beating you to death. They appear to have the opinion that they have counter-magic and land destruction formats for higher skilled players (Vintage and Legacy, and even Modern.) If that's what you like (like I do), I am thinking Standard is going to be less fun for you. Standard is going to be 1) Mid-range Good Stuff (Jund, Mono-B Devotion, Junk, and GR Planeswalkers, BW Midrange), 2) UW/Esper/UWR/Grixis board control with limited, relatively high cost counter and hand destruction (hand destruction is not as good in control, btw, better in mid-range), 3) Big and small aggro (GR Monsters, GW Monsters, Rabble Red, RW Aggro, Mono-B aggro, Human aggro) 4) Tempo aka Aggro Control (Delver, Mono-U Devotion, Aristocrats).
Not only that, there likely won't be any really good combo. Now I hate combo decks. I do. I think they are crap and losing on turn 1 before I ever got to do anything is dull. But hey, I like to lock players out and outsmart them so they can't do anything effective for 10 turns and then beat them, so it's not like I'm not a troll too. But the closest thing to combo since Scars left was Aristocrats. That ain't no Turn 1-2 combo kill.
This does not mean Magic might not swing the other way at some point. Stalling power creep is very hard, while creating new cards with interesting effects is also hard, and doing both is really hard. The result is that a lot of what will be playable in Standard will not be intended to radically alter eternal formats, but once in a while give them some new oomph.
I hate to say it, but that probably means little to no new land destruction and low cost draw and counter-magic, for quite some time.
If I had to guess from watching the last sets since Scars block, I would say this has been the trend, and even then Innistrad was pretty darn DrawGo friendly. Of course, not so much since then, but that block had a huge, huge impact on Legacy and is a keystone of Modern. So I would expect the next few blocks to continue down the creature-centric, board-centric path, as much as that bums me out.

Wow, ok! I guess THIS is going to be my new Sunforger target in Kaalia instead of Crackling Doom. Very cool. Definitely need one for Teysa as well to replace Mortify.
Talking about PT Journey into Nyx. PR M15 doesnt matter because we're losing RTR Block. Patrick Chapin played 4 Silence the Believers, while Nam Sung Wook played 2.
Wasn't PT Journey into Nyx block?
Block makes a HUGE difference. It isn't odd to see cards in block that would never see play otherwise.
It does yes...but PT M15 had RTR, which makes some cards better than others, especially the ones from the RTR Block. When Khans of Tarkir drops, we wont have RTR Block, so its best to look at PT Journey into Nyx for how the block interacts. Silence the Believers and Banishing Light were the removal of choice for most Midrange Decks, followed by Bile Blight and Hero's Downfall.
My point was, Silence the Believers was a big card for Midrange decks, so the 4-mana cost of Utter End will not be a hindrance for the ability to exile basically anything that doesnt have Shroud/Hexproof or is a land. Im seeing so many people lividly upset that it isnt Vindicate that its becoming a joke.
Silence the believers was only a big card for mid-range decks in BLOCK. I would argue this is due to limited access to cheaper alternatives. In block there was only two card's cheaper (that I am aware of): bile blight and hero's downfall. Block didn't include card's like UP or devour flesh. Had those card's been in block, one could easily argue that silence would not see play.
You don't understand what he is trying to say. The "alternatives" that you speak of were from M14 and Return to Ravnica, which will not be in standard when this card is standard playable. With that said, did M15 even release any good removal for black? Ulcerate? With Theros block cards being the only other removal options once Khans of Tarkir releases, the cards that were played during Theros block tournaments will likely be the ones that are worth playing. Utter End beats out Silence the Believers. Hands down. And Silence the Believers was played in Theros block.

Well, I run a BWR midrange modern deck, so I was hoping that Mardu would have some cards I can put in my deck. So far there are none, but I'm hoping the charm will be good. People are disappointed because this is so close to being a good modern card. 1 less mana or the ability to target lands and it would be a very good modern card.
