For the sixth year in a row, Magic will be hosting a party to kick off our new block's first set! You'll have to follow a quest to earn your entry to the party, as with every year, and trust me when I say you won't want to miss the party! And yes, we will have several preview cards there to kick off next week's Khans of Tarkir preview season!
The party starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday. To start your journey to get your ticket to the party, make your way to the tournament area, where you'll find a booth that is the start and the end of the quest. Keep in mind tickets to the party are limited on both Friday and Saturday.
“A man's at odds to know his mind cause his mind is aught he has to know it with. He can know his heart, but he dont want to. Rightly so. Best not to look in there. It aint the heart of a creature that is bound in the way that God has set for it. You can find meanness in the least of creatures, but when God made man the devil was at his elbow. A creature that can do anything. Make a machine. And a machine to make the machine. And evil that can run itself a thousand years, no need to tend it.”
― Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West
Hopefully they're spoil some decently pushed/iconic cards for each mechanic. I'm not really looking forward to another Inspired/Tribute/Bestow scenario.
Or Cipher.
So for us in the Midwest that'd be 9:00 pm Central. Cipher was cool, but I'll agree that Inspired and Tribute were rather boring. If the Abzan intro pack guy is accurate (although currently unconfirmed) we can guess Abzan will include +1/+1 counters.
Of course, feel free to jack this post with pictures and information as the event unfolds. Thanks in advance to everyone that contributes PAX info here!
Vexing devil and browbeat are both quite poor magic cards. You never get the mode you want. 3 mana for 5 damage to the face is pretty inefficient honestly. Vexing devil is awful after turn 1 typically unlike goblin guide which is at least passable past turn 1 due to haste.
Hope they spoil some good ones. Like the look of the set so far sans the unconfirmed ivorytusk fortress.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."

I don't mean to digress, but 4x Vexing Devil won GP Kobe. You are wrong about it being a poor magic card.
I don't think anyone will disagree with Browbeat not being good.
With Vexing Devil, the two modes are similar enough for a deck as fast as burn that, while it's not a functional finisher for burn, it's great at getting you from 20 to 4.
Anyone who tries arguing that Vexing Devil is bad after it wins a tournament goes against what a good card is: If a card wins a tournament, it is by definition a good card, at least, it was in that metagame.
Poor magic cards have won tournaments. The fact that vexing devil doesn't lend itself to a consistent strategy is why it's a poor card. Play it on turn 2 or after and it is quite poor. Play it turn 1? Okay so you have lava spike +1 damage typically or discard target swords to plowshares or something. Unstable mutatation won an SCG legacy open. It is a very bad card. Vexing devil taking down one GP means nothing. If it won consistently? Different story.

Let's save that discussion for the recent open thread on vexing.
I for one, am excited to see what they have in store here. I feel azban could really go either way as far as being a solid color combo. What I really hope though is that we FINALLY see some good UB cards that aren't mill.

Or if they insist on Mill, they could at least make it decent. Either give us good mill, or don't bother with it all, this half way crap just disappoints the few that actually play mill, or makes someone think they will be the ones to put mill on the map. My buddy has been really trying to make a modern mill deck work, but the last time we played I beat him 7 out of 8 times. Games were close, but mill just doesn't seem capable of finishing games with any sort of regularity.
Put a soild grave based deck in with it in standard and a grave hate in colors other than UB and I think it would be ok. Mill is easy to hate out, things thay shuffle back into the deck or bringing back Threshold would balance good mill.
so, if this starts at 7 pm pdt. that does mean, that for central europe this is at 3am on sunday right? :-( kinda annoying.
I think it starts at 13 O´clock tomorrow
i dont think that is possible. because if it starts today at 7pm in the us. meaning SATURDAY 7pm, there must be a timedifference like from 18 hours, which is not happening
its -9 hours from pdt to central europe time. currently at pax location its around 8 AM. in central europa its 5pm. i think i was wrong. its not at 3am in the morning in central europe, its at 4am in the morning on sunday.

I think mill is really hard to balance. If doesnt really interact in combat, so if you make it faster to win before agro wins, it is a really weird match up where the agro player cant really do anything. Wizards is against matches with no to little interaction, and I think they are really scared of mill in the sense that if that deck becomes to good, matches are pretty boring.
Lets say they make a good black blue deck with a reprinted damnation or something. It juts becomes ''mill, remove all your dudes, mill, win''. Lets say thats the top deck of the format. What is agro supposed to do to really counter it?
Seems to me it will eather be to weak or to uncontrolable.
Without a reoccurring source there just isn't enough redundancy. By the standard that says 3 dmg is worth 2 mana and a card for ~1/6 of your starting life the least a mill card should hit is 8.
You push it much more than that anywhere but rare and you really ruin limited.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
