Did they really need that line about using him as a commander? It shrinks the art pretty bad.
Well, if they wanted it to be legal to play these Planeswalkers as Commanders, but not play Planeswalkers released in other products, then the like was necessary
I'm surprised that there are people who dislike the idea of a planeswalker commander. It's a new way to play a casual format, and a very cool one at that. Plus, now that we know we are going back in time for those guys, we are likely getting a Serra planeswalker card, which I've always wanted but Maro has constantly shot it down because she is dead (but he holds no power over supplemental products! Ha!)
I don't think Ob will be it. They seem to focus on pre-mending, so expect Jaya Ballard, Freyalise, Serra and Leshrac, though my personal preference for Black would be, unrealistically as it is, Baron Sengir.

Is there an example of this? Right now, we have two commanders previewed, one is Teferi who just happens to be pre-Mending, but there's also Gisa, who is definitely post-mending (and a creature).
Personally, if I were Wizards, I would select only pre-Mending walkers who have no chance of being printed, since any post mending walker (like Ob) could be seen in a time-travel block (like KTK...)

I hate that art is so small, because of this can be commander ability, it also kinda annoying from a flavor and immersion standpoint and makes that PW card feel less like a character and more like a card with that technical text(not sure if i explain it the right way, but that is my personal feeling). I am totally happy to see old walkers and legends, but small art kinda spoils it. Also would be cool if RC banned those walkers as generals, though i doubt they would dare to antagonize Wizards in such a way.
Urza doesn't always appear in his most powerful form, I mean just look at Blind Seer they could make a less powerful Urza and just use the excuse that he is toning down his own abilities for fun.
I mean Nicol Bolas is one of the most powerful beings in the entire mtg universe and we still have Nicol, Bolas Planeswalker, which isn't even a fraction of what his true power would be.
Except how many people will be happy with that excuse?
Yes, Nicol could be more powerful but he's still a 7cmc 3 colored walker. Urza would probably be 10 cmc at 5 colors 5 colorless or maybe even 2 per color, because even if they "tone" him down for a Planeswalker contract, we know how crazy he gets when he starts fighting. Urza wouldn't tone his powers down just for the fun of it when it comes to murdering someone off the face of the earth, which is technically what happens during a dual.
The whole point is, just like MaRo said, making Urza would not work out well.
1. Old fans will feel his power level would need to huge
2. New players will most likely be confused about why some gray haired old man is this bonkers Planeswalker.
For being a Vintage/Legacy legal card only, Teferi it's incredibly underwhelming, especially when we consider the high mana cost. I mean, take a look on Dack Fayden, another PW designed for eternal formats only, for example. This PW it's a junk mythic with the gimmicks of the general allowed clause. Someone could say "It's so underpowered because otherwise price of deck would be too high due to legacy/vintage players requests". Too bad all the True Name Nemesis cards putted constantly in those casual multiplayer products invalidates pretty much this point.
Its underpowered cause its a commander... if they made him a vintage playable PW then chances are he would be super busted as a commander and have to be auto banned.
And since when WotC cares if cards are banned in Commanders? The EDH banlist it's not something they have control or even care completely, it's the RC, which it's independent from WotC that decide what's ok and what not for the format. I'm sure this Teferi could be at least a little bit better and still not format warping as a Planeswalker. I test for months differents Planeswalkers already allowed as generals as a house-rules of my playgroup and the only one that gives us really problem were Nicol Bolas and Tezzeret the Seeker. The rest went from very good, to very fun, to decent, to even simply unplayable (like Tibalt). Nothing that would scream to formatwarping or unfun game state tough.
Hope the others will be better.
Thats just silly. Ofcourse Wizards cares if a card is banned. They care even more so in the commander set... why in teh world would they make a commander set and not think about how the cards are used in commander? Thats literally the reason this card is printed.
As for using other PWs, sure some are unplayable like Tibalt... but hes also really weak and not anywhere close to vintage playable. If he was on here you would have said the same thing about how weak he is.
Sure they can probably be a bit stronger than this guy (I doubt he winds up being the best of the 5) but dont expect them to make them with vintage in mind. Its a commander product.
What is the point of that extra rules text? If they feel planeswalkers shouldn't be allowed to be commanders, then none of them should be commanders. If planeswalkers SHOULD be allowed to be commanders, then they should just update the rules for Commander to allow any planeswalker. It's really inelegant to add a small extra rule like this to the text box.
Besides, a wide swathe of the commander crowd has been asking for that change for years anyway. Making only a few specific planeswalkers allowed is just rubbing salt in their wounds.
Hahaha, so happy about this! I've been supporting Planeswalkers as Commanders for years. I've even done some testing with them. Don't allow Sorin Markov or Tezzeret the Seeker as Commanders, and there is no issue. Planeswalkers are surprisingly balanced, if not, underpowered as Commanders. Hopefully the rules committee just caves and says "*sigh* if you are going to print this ugly text on cards, then we'll just rules that all Planeswalkers are now legal as Commanders."
They should have just made the Legendary Creatures the "face" of the set and left the Planeswalkers without any text. If someone wants to use a walker as a Commander in a casual game them can.
I think the real question is, will Teferi's deck include any other Planeswalkers? Or is Wizards going to pull a "Here's a deck with a Commander based around Planeswalkers. Now go buy some yourself because we're too cheap to include them"? The options would be:
Jace Beleren I could see him in there. He's not too expensive and is good, fair in multiplayer and not OP Jace, Architect of Thought I could probably see this Jace in there too just because he's decent and so cheap, but he was just released in a DD so I don't know Jace, Memory Adept I can't see this one unless the deck has a mill theme. He just doesn't do much otherwise. Jace, the Mind Sculptor AHAHAHAHAAA...haa..ha... Jace, the Living Guildpact Newest Planeswalker, don't see it happening Tamiyo, the Moon Sage Maybe. She's not too expensive and is pretty decent (though like most walkers, terrible in multiplayer) Tezzeret the Seeker Is actually pretty good in EDH because of all the mana rocks, so..maybe. Karn Liberated Will probably not happen because he's $50 and will likely be a MM2/3 mythic, but I really wish Wizards would do it. I really want more Karns and his price really needs to come down.

Explain how not printing other PWs makes WOTC cheap.
I wish my 4/4s with haste and first strike that acted as Goblin Warchiefs were better and didn't die to instants and overshadowed all other 4 drops in the format. And that they had evasion too, and some way to dodge wrath effects.
I really hope that the RC instantly bans this card, and others like it, as a commander.
There are three core rules of commander:
1. Your deck must be 99 cards exactly, with no repeats (except for basic lands), and with your commander counting as number 100
2. Your life total is 40, and you can die from taking 21 commander damage
3. You must use a legendary creature as a commander
There are variants of those rules (most notably with Pauper Commander). The thing is, those are variant formats. You would never play a deck from the Pauper Commander variant in a game against a deck from the Normal Commander format. By the same token, you should not be able to play a planeswalker as your general in a game against a deck with a legendary creature as the general.
Now, I am completely fine with a variant format where only planeswalkers can be generals, and you thus play matches against other decks that abide by this variant rule. But from the way this sounds, you can use this Teferi (and the others in the cycle) as generals in matches where everyone else is using a legendary creature.
I hated the violations of the format that WotC made with Commander 2013 (I especially hate Derevi (because it can be cast for a fixed cost as opposed to a cost that scales as it dies) and Oloro (because it does things while in the command zone)), and I really hate this new idea for "Commander" 2014. What they are doing is not commander; it's a violation of the core of the format. WotC getting their hands on Commander is a bad idea. It was good with Commander 2011, but they have since proven that they cannot handle it.
I know that I, for one, will work to ban this in my playgroups (though I will happily work to create a planeswalker variant in the same spirit as Pauper Commander). I encourage you all to do the same.
I'm surprised that there are people who dislike the idea of a planeswalker commander. It's a new way to play a casual format, and a very cool one at that. Nerds aren't exactly the most open-minded of people. They react to any kind of change or unknown with pitchforks and torches and a big, fat temper tantrum.
I so want Yawgmoth represented on a card. Didn't have basically have the powers of a planeswalker while on Phyrexia, he just wasn't ever actually one?
He was actually probably more powerful than a pre-mending walker, considering that his death cloud form was able to effortlessly kill Bo Levar and Commodore Guff. The only thing he couldn't do was planeswalk, as he had to use a portal to do so.

I collect Legendary cards, Planeswalkers, and Sagas.
Current count of different Legends: 1314
Current count of different Planeswalkers: 213
Current count of different Sagas: 44
Change is good if it has a purpose. But this is just change for the sake of doing something different. I still stand by what I said, though I may have been a bit harsh on the "WotC has proven that they cannot handle Commander" part. They can still design awesome legendary creature generals (Gisa, who is also in this Commander 2014 product, is awesome, and I will definitely build a deck out of her). I just don't know why they had to give us this radical "change for change's sake" idea of using a cycle of 5 planeswalkers as your general when they could just as easily have made a cycle of 5 mono-colored legends to be the face of the product instead (and made a new planeswalker cycle as part of the 99. I love the idea of a Teferi planeswalker, and his abilities are awesome designs. I just don't think he and others like him should be able to be generals).
