Well, your playgroup can just ban it. Or if the people who handling the EDH banlist don't like the idea they can also ban it. I don't think it's too much of a problem.
I kind of feel like planeswalkers as a commander is against what the format is aiming for. One of the main points to the format is to build a deck to synergize with your commander, unless the other 4 planeswalker commanders have something unique about them, any deck they lead are likely to just be a mono-colored good-stuff deck that would function better with an actual creature as the lead instead. Another thing that makes it weird is that usually commander damage is a fairly decent wincon against an infinite lifegain deck, not so much with these guys. I almost hope that the RC ends up deciding to ban these guys as commanders just so that WotC sees that changing the rules for what can be a commander is not design space.
What's the RC? Is that the group of people responsible for the creation of the Commander format in the first place?
To be fair, those people have been wrong on rules regarding their own format before.
As far as I know, Wizards is responsible for determining what the legality of new cards are in Commander, not them, aren't they?

Tezzeret the Seeker is the only Vintage playable commaner and he's mediocre in Planeswalker Wars, I imagine he'd be even worse as a normal commander.
It's not the same having Time Vault and power 9 than not having them.

No, they are not. The Rules Committee (RC) makes those determinations, as they have since before Wizards officially recognized the format. Their site is here. They also time their banlist announcements with WotC's.

Maybe you don't know this but Teferi WAS a Planeswalker :\
We have had plenty of Legendaries that are/were Walkers but have been around way before Planewalker cards were a thing.
Personally I don't want to see an Urza Planeswalker. If anything he should be made into an Archenemy card, ala Hydra fight.
We all know he's much too powerful to have MTG constraint abilities. There is a reason fake Urza's are:
+1 Destroy Permanent
+0 Draw 3 cards
-1 Destroy all Creatures, Artifacts and Enchantments on the field.
-10 Win Game
If they print anything less than that lots of people will whine and complain as to how come the all mighty Urza is sooo bad.
I'm happy we finally get color focused decks instead of just spreading colors all over, since wedges are now confirmed in Khans.
Urza doesn't always appear in his most powerful form, I mean just look at Blind Seer they could make a less powerful Urza and just use the excuse that he is toning down his own abilities for fun.
I mean Nicol Bolas is one of the most powerful beings in the entire mtg universe and we still have Nicol, Bolas Planeswalker, which isn't even a fraction of what his true power would be.
As far as I know, Wizards is responsible for determining what the legality of new cards are in Commander, not them, aren't they?
No, they are not. The Rules Committee (RC) makes those determinations, as they have since before Wizards officially recognized the format. Their site is here. They also time their banlist announcements with WotC's.
Ah, okay. Thanks for the information.
But if Wizards is the ultimate authority as far as determining legality of cards is concerned, can't Wizards just ignore what the Commander RC says and post "Commander: Legal" on Gatherer anyway?

I suppose they could, but I don't see it happening. Wizards has said for some time that the format will continue to be overseen by the RC. The RC also commands a great deal of loyalty from the Commander player base, as it was they that nurtured and shaped the format into what it is today. Interfering with their authority would likely lead to some form of backlash toward Wizards.

I can't even handle how amazing this is to finally have cards for past characters. I have been lobbying for past characterless cards to get printed since starting to play MTG and reading the lore, and now I see this news!
LOVE the Teferi card, and the fact the decks are monocolored. It's amazing to have him get a PW version card too, and one that can be used as a commander no less.
Now that Teferi PW is made, I hope we get cards for:
Choryu from Kamigawa
Arixmethes from Theros
Jenrik from Innistrad
GISA! 7/27/2014 12:43:51 AM
BTW, those who fear Urza getting a card: don't. This is EDH. It's a casual format and many of us who love it care more about flavor and lore than anything else. He could cost WUBGR10 and people would still play and love it.
I'm not the only one that is REALLY bothered that his +1 is almost a strictly better take on the new Jace's am I?
He's a 6 mana walker; 6+ mana walkers follow different rules than cheaper walkers do. Look at Garruk Caller of Beasts' +1. Compare Karn's +4 to either of the Liliana +1s. Compare Bolas' -2 to Gideon's -2. "+1: Draw a card" is considered balanced at 5 mana, 6 mana walkers get better effects and 3-4 mana walkers get worse effects.
I really hope that the RC instantly bans this card, and others like it, as a commander.
There are three core rules of commander:
1. Your deck must be 99 cards exactly, with no repeats (except for basic lands), and with your commander counting as number 100
2. Your life total is 40, and you can die from taking 21 commander damage
3. You must use a legendary creature as a commander
There are variants of those rules (most notably with Pauper Commander). The thing is, those are variant formats. You would never play a deck from the Pauper Commander variant in a game against a deck from the Normal Commander format. By the same token, you should not be able to play a planeswalker as your general in a game against a deck with a legendary creature as the general.
Now, I am completely fine with a variant format where only planeswalkers can be generals, and you thus play matches against other decks that abide by this variant rule. But from the way this sounds, you can use this Teferi (and the others in the cycle) as generals in matches where everyone else is using a legendary creature.
I hated the violations of the format that WotC made with Commander 2013 (I especially hate Derevi (because it can be cast for a fixed cost as opposed to a cost that scales as it dies) and Oloro (because it does things while in the command zone)), and I really hate this new idea for "Commander" 2014. What they are doing is not commander; it's a violation of the core of the format. WotC getting their hands on Commander is a bad idea. It was good with Commander 2011, but they have since proven that they cannot handle it.
I know that I, for one, will work to ban this in my playgroups (though I will happily work to create a planeswalker variant in the same spirit as Pauper Commander). I encourage you all to do the same.

Hey now, I've always really liked Mishra, Artificer Prodigy. I just wish he wasn't entirely useless as a Commander. But I concede his card is nowhere near the power level of his character.
As for Planeswalkers as Commanders, I've sort of always wondered why this wasn't already allowed. For something that is ostensibly a casual format *** official thing, it's certainly bound by some arbitrary rules.
In the past, I've been pretty unanimously positive about the goods WoTC makes for Commander.
Now, though... I dunno, this rubs me the wrong way. I'm not sure EDH would be improved if 'walkers could be used as generals in place of legendaries. The unease will probably pass, though.
And anyway, the color limits are still in place, even if you play a walker as your general.
Yawgmoth was not a walker. He tried stealing dyfeds spark but only managed to kill her instead. Leshrac is very possible. But i think the spoiled walker points to more story iconic walkers.
Leshrac seems like the prime candidate for the black slot, as he seemed relatively popular and spanned many blocks and planes (including the newly-popularized Shandalar).
I collect Legendary cards, Planeswalkers, and Sagas.

Current count of different Planeswalkers: 213

Did they really need that line about using him as a commander? It shrinks the art pretty bad.
Yes. In a sanctioned Commander tournament, you wouldn't be able to use him as a commander. Now they could have changed the rules themselves, but that opens a can of worms with past PWs as well as potentially future PWs. It's a lot easier to say "Here, have these 5 walkers you can play with. If you want more, house rules!" No bannings or anything needed.
