After the disappointment of Theros block,
Tarkir seemed like a natural place to take a break-
Warlords/Dragons is one of the least interesting themes out there for me.
Then they had to go and give it Wedge Factions and Commanders,
and I'm sure I'll be buying those (probably in uber expensive foil form) if nothing else.

Do you know the gimmick I would like to see? Khans would have the current frame, which closely resembles the one we had between 8th edition to Journey into Nyx. The second set would take place in the past and would have the pre 8th edition card frames, except with that wierd black bottom thing we see with the new frames. Then the third set being in alternate present would have the planar chaos frames except with the black bottom we see with the current frames.
I kind of wish there was one set where the entire set used the planar chaos frames, or any alternate frame, but too bad that won't happen. I think the only time that they should use the alternate frames would be if there was some sort of alternate reality in the settings, like planar chaos. The frames would have to be similar to the current ones, but the background design would have to be different, just like how in red, the current frame has an lightning electric like look to it, while the planar chaos version has a stony look.
Finally a Jaya Ballard planeswalker?! I can only dream... sigh... A big REB effect, a bolt, an inferno effect, and to straight up hate on blue have an ancestral recall ability(prob have to do the looter effect). This is where my mind has been daydreaming all day.
You seem to be working with the Median (i.e. average is defined as taking the lowest and highest values, adding them together, then dividing by two)--the efficacy of Necropotence & Co. adds that much more to the median.
That's not what median is. To find the median, put all your data points in order least to greatest and then find the middle value. If there are two middle values (because you have an even number of data points), then you average the two middle values. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median
Really? there are people that actually wanted morph to return? The rest of it is pretty good hype though, looking forward to seeing the video of the panel, and the khans of tarkir video.
I can't believe people actually want morph back, that was an absolutely atrocious limited format and the morph cards were pretty much all unplayable in constructed as well unless you were cheating the mechanics with Astral Slide. OOO limited was like 75% about the coin flip, they'd play a turn 3 morph, then attack with it on turn 4 and you'd have to guess whether or not to block it, with several creatures causing you to lose if you did and several causing you to lose if you didn't. OLS was even worse as any morph in any color deck could randomly turn into a 3/4 for 0 mana and eat whatever you were attacking or blocking with.
Morph is fun.

It's about time for the reserved list to die, for the sake of Vintage and Legacy (And Commander).
Personally I feel really excited for this set! The newness and uniqueness of the clans brings back memories of older magic sets where the whole plane was created by imagination. Too many recent blocks seem to have limited themselves by either representing old worlds (ie. Ravnica/ Mirrodin) or creating ones so based on a genre (ie. Innistrad with Gothic Horror/ Theros with Ancient Greece) to the point where many flavor cards or worldbuilding cards felt a little less impactful because you kind of expected them. While I did love the flavor of those sets and acknowledge that there were great hits in them, the notion of a completely new world with new quirks (hopefully akin to Zendikar) fills me with excitement.

There's also a question of WHY the khans extirpated the dragons. I can't shake the feeling it's already been explained in Sarkhan's backstory. Maybe the dragons grew oppressive, and Sarkhan's interference prevents the khanates from defending themselves? That would explain how similar the names of set 1 and set 3 are. For all we know, Sarkhan's going to be very much a Villain Protagonist (YOU fancy getting shoved around by dragons?)
At the panel Maro made it seem like the Khans just hunted the dragons to extinction or something. One of the clans (the one that is about defense and "surviving") uses Dragon scales for their armor for example. This again, was stated in the panel.
More importantly, anyone know when the vid is going to be up?
It might show up this monday.
Either way I think my mental state for this set has gone from excited to neutral, I was kinda expecting something different from this block and so I feel a little disappointed. I hope that this ends up on a higher power level then what Theros was, or at least interesting enough to allow for a plethora of new deck designs to be playable.
Even though I'm a URG player through and through, it seems that the clan has much more Gruul than Simic or Izzet in it, so I'm a bit disappointed for now. If everything goes wrong, I can still go GUB and become a Sidisi fan.
Well, they're certainly not going to be Izzet since the clans are all about their main colours (in this case green) and we've seen nothing so far to suggest they aren't strongly UG. Those colours aren't just about evolution vats and sharkcrabfrogpeople.
Am I mistaken, or were there a lot less spoilers than we normally see? I remember last year there was a big party with supersized versions of cards like Elspeth, Sun's Champion. Was that at another event closer to release?
Making planeswalkers able to be commanders is a super bad idea........I immediately vote for errata-ed text on these to say that they can't.
I feel like plainswalker commander should be it's own variant. I'll definitely be pushing for my group to ban them as commanders unless it's a "plainswalker commander game" where all the decks have a plainswalker commander.
I'll never understand why people judge the quality of a block by its power level and not the fun you have with playing it.
might be the most important quote of Mtg Sal history.
It's a catchy enough quote, but the response is obvious: for many people, weak is not fun. They prefer to drive Lambourghinis. They ARE talking about how much fun they're having when they describe a set as weak.

Although you don't explain why. The rest of your post is either A) "I have this set figured out already guys" and B) "this set should cater to me, not the majority" (MaRo has said Morph is one of the most popular abilities to potentially return, and a very small minority are interested in "vanilla matters").

I think that was PAX....that was the one with the Xenagos reveal or whatever, right?
Morph?????? Well I guess, if you have to bring it back. It has been forever. So Onslaught block right? So we are also going to see Cycling, amplify, provoke, double strike, Storm, and dragon boons! There will most also likely be fetch lands reprinted. Since I think even the basic story line is the same as onslaught block with the changes of the clans into something else later in the block.....How much more similar can you get? That is literally what they are doing here.
Are you high? Based on what we know so far, the only thing Khans has in common with Onslaught block is morph. Zendikar had kicker, but it was hardly a rehash of Invasion. Devotion was just a renamed chroma, but that doesn't mean that Theros had much else in common with Eventide.
There's also a question of WHY the khans extirpated the dragons. I can't shake the feeling it's already been explained in Sarkhan's backstory. But if they revere aspects of the dragons, then why would they kill the dragons?

Actually this is a common behavior in 'primitive' cultures , like a native american hunting a dangeos animal and then feasting on its dead body to gain that beast's atributes...
I also am displeased about the reprint of rolling earthquake in From the Vault: Annihilation; why would anyone want that card?
Because it's a functionally-superior version of Earthquake? In practice you might see one card with horsemanship in ten games of EDH. Thus, most of the time, this reads XR: Deal X damage to each creature and each player. It gives red a scalable sweeper that can hit larger flyers, which makes it a unique weapon.
On everything else:
1. Arcanis being bumped to mythic feels right, since I always thought the five pit legends would have been mythics had they existed back then.
2. Surprised to see morph back. Here's hoping the power level is a little more balanced for limited, as at least in TPF block they were either stupidgood or completelyuseless.
3. There are plenty of characters I'm hoping to see as possible new legends (hello, Feather!), to the point that I wish each color would get two. Maybe I'll finally get my "Thraxes, Big Stupid Dragon" that I've been wanting.
4. I have some major issues with using planeswalkers as commanders. Would kind of prefer that to just be a separate variant than have it get shoehorned into normal EDH. However, I reserve the right to completely change my mind if Jaya Ballard is the mono-red 'walker. Anyone else think we finally get cards for Freyalise and Leshrac?
5. The design for Khans so far is fantastic. Reminds me a lot of Kamigawa block. Curious to see how the theme changes. It's been quite a while since we've had a block where each set had its own distinctive theme (I want to say Odyssey block?), and I'm interested to see how they handle that with new design tools.
6. New frame Jace Counterspell and Demonic Tutor are gonna be PRICEY. How does the Anthology even work? Are they just shoving all eight decks in, in new frames, and calling it a day, or are they just picking and choosing individual cards from each deck? Have to think this one is NEVER going for MSRP.

Glad to see Arcanis is back in some form. Was hoping he'd finally reveal himself to be a planeswalker though. P:

He has a hedron on his staff. This is post-Zendikar.
Not every character needs to be a planeswalker.
And in a standard with Aggressive Mining
But if they revere aspects of the dragons, then why would they kill the dragons?
Because I play Modern and if I can't play cards with low power-level in Modern because then I will lose and losing consistently is not fun for me.
Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
