this whole exclusive promo card thing is utter crap
Cry me a river.
On a different note, something seems off about the Ajani and the flames on Chandra looks terrible. That being said I will be picking up a set regardless of the price.
Once again, I applaud Wizards for for choice of promo. Cards that are very easily obtainable in a current card set, but in a very unique visual form. (In addition, the visual form chosen is one that isn't appealing to everybody.)
Hyper-rare cards are good for a game over all, they give collectors a goal. But these are the perfect balance. Now, if they fix the distribution system from last year, they will have nailed it.
They all look good to me except for Ajani. Can't say I remember how last year's looked, but they ran out last year before my buddy had a chance to purchase. Hoping they print more this year, since I don't think they realized how popular these would be the first time around.
If they had Jim Lee do this instead of Jae, I'd fork over whatever ungodly amount people are selling them for.
I have two questions. Sorry if they are not relevant to this thread.
The first is do we have any idea of whether they are going to do a live streaming of the reveal of the next set and other future products?
The other is a question that has less to to do with the promos or the event and more about when we start getting info about the next set.
After they give the preview at SDCC of the next set how soon after do we start getting more info? I am simply asking about what is normal for the amount of wait?
Unlike nearly everyone else at the time, it seemed, I absolutely loved the way the last set looked. I sat at my computer, refreshing that page nearly nonstop 'til they were gone, but I didn't luck out. I saw these new ones had art by Jae Lee and was pretty sad, because I can't take a repeat of last year. Now that I've seen the images though, I actually don't think I like them very much. Thank goodness!
I seem to remember that the last Comic-Con exclusive promo printings caused a massive *****storm. This is because so much of Magic's fanbase is composed of terrible, entitled people.
So, what you are saying is that I should find someone to pay in order to get these for me now.
Gotcha.
The problem is the limited arrangement for that style to a one off deal for that art which is one of the major issues, and it seems to be popular. If the product was offered at more conventions there wouldn't be as much of an issue. What happens typically is that someone like Star City sets up a booth and buys those up and gets a premium for that product through arbitrage. While people in foreign countries feel "duped" in an unfair way since that product doesn't reach them.
For small time capitalists like most LGSes, we have to contend that special products such as these are able to send a small windfall to their product lines, as well, or to offer for promotional tournaments.

Life is a beautiful engineer, yet a brutal scientist.
I have no problem with limited promos. But there is no reason to be so limited. There are people who went to the con, were in the booth on day one and no luck. That is a problem. Frankly I wish there were more promos just not all at sdcc. Gen con used to be the heart of magic and they don't even sell from the vault at that event like they used to. I'm afraid this is Hasbro just trying to outdo the other toy companies. If we had specialty promos around the globe for big cons, everyone could get something nice, and it might break some people who feel they 'need' everything.

Yeah, this pretty much. Limited edition sets, fine. But if you're gonna do them, have different ones for different cons or even opportunities for people to get them on the other side of the damn country (and not just those who can make it out West). Have something for Origins or Gen Con or even New York Comic Con, something where not just one segment of the country can get them and that's it...

Any segment of the country can get them, It's called ebay. I live on the east coast and I really don't have a problem with it.
In the time you would spend waiting in line and traveling, and then adding in the $110 price tag, and the entrance fee you very likely could have worked long enough to just buy them off ebay anyway for cheaper.

But if I am spending $1000 to go to San Diego and hit the Comic Con, it is not just to get some cards and leave, they would just be a great memento. So yeah maybe I am not in the $500 promo club, too rich for me, and that is OK. But I am in the $100 souvenir and cube pimping club. I also go to Origins and GenCon every year. In my opinion Wizards is missing an opportunity.
Magic is growing , we are older and wealthier, and I love your cardboard crack. But I have a 6 year old and a wife, can we meet in the middle? maybe modern masters 2? How about foil black Kird Ape at GenCon? Or a stack of slightly dinged storm crows at Origins?
Meh, this is one product I'm not that interested in. Some of them look neat and maybe if there was a Liliana of the Veil, Jace TMS, or other walker I played, I would care more. But as is, I just can't seem to like these.

If someone is playing Icy Manipulator against you, you've already won.
The big issue was the 2-per-customer limit. People were going back in line and giving people extra money so they would buy them another copy, so everyone at the front ended up purchasing 2, and thus it sold out super quickly. Lame

Based on last year:
1) There will be no live streaming. The video will be placed on the website later on. There will be live twitter, though. They will talk about other products as well
2) After the preview there will be a long while without any spoilers. They let us digest the teasers. Real spoilers will be in september.
I expect SCG's entourage to line up at SDCC for this one. From Ben Bleiweiss to their janitor. Then they can charge anything they want, like they always do. lol
Gen con used to be the heart of magic and they don't even sell from the vault at that event like they used to.
It's kind of sad, Wotc has been steadily reducing their GenCon presence over the past couple years. GenCon is the premier convention for rpg/board/card gaming in the US. Yet, WotC provides pretty much no support for it.
Could care less about that axe, but the art reminds me of Yoshi-taka (really mtgs? I can't write Yo*****aka because of the center of his name???) Amano's art work for FF and that would be enough for me to want them. I hope I get a chance, someday, to look at one.
I'm not sure which tickles my fancy more: the planeswalkers, or the axe. I know the axe is (probably) not tournament-legal, but what about the PWs? Are they legal for use in, say, EDH or other formats?

As they're black bordered and have regular MTG back, they're legal for tournaments

Ajani looks like he was weirdly stitched together after being part of a magic horror show.
From afar, Jace looks like a zombie
Liliana loves those bodypaint. Looks more like a tribal shaman instead of a necromancer.
Chandra. Whoa, my eyes burned from that ugliness.
Nissa. Have you been growing candy floss on your staff?
Garruk. Is that a bulldog?
